Shadow's not a robot, Eggman says he rescued him and then just built a bunch of Shadow Androids because reasons in the true final boss segment of Shadow the Hedgehog.
Then again, I don't expect anyone to really know that considering that means playing Shadow the Hedgehog for an extended periods of time.

Shadow in Sonic games after SA2 is a robot.
The two towers were blown up by terrorists in Deus Ex.
Sonic CD is a prequel to Sonic 4.
The Hero's Shade in Twilight Princess is the manifested regrets of the hero of time.
The entire Zelda timeline is a retcon.

I... I don't think you know what a retcon is... It's when you go back and change previously established canon in order to suit a newer story. The Zelda timeline doesn't change previously established canon at any point that I'm aware of. Sonic CD being a prequel does not a retcon make unless something in Sonic CD disagrees with something in Sonic 4 (or the other way around. I'm not sure which one came first.) The two towers in Deus Ex were removed in order to deal with a low polygon count available. That's not a retcon, that's making due with hardware limitations. Unless they added it back in recent Deus Ex games, that's not a retcon. And Shadow's a robot in Sonic games after SA2? Because Shadow the Hedgehog doesn't seem to support that theory. No matter which ending you come to, Shadow is always wrong about what he is. What he actually is, he's either the revived Shadow from SA2 or a clone of him. I forget which. Even if he is a robot, it doesn't contradict SA2's canon because Shadow died at the end.

@Rexcalibr: Just cause they are siblings don't mean they are Bowser's children.

True. It seems like Nintendo hasn't decided yet exactly what the situation is. Palutena's guidance on the Koopalings is trying to keep the relationship with Bowser a mystery and they describe it that way verbatim.

I think he could be their uncle. It would make a lot of sense since Morton's full name is Morton Koopa Jr. It would mean their father was Morton senior, and also explain why a bunch of children koopas are constantly with Bowser and is seemingly their caretaker.

Who knows, Nintendo has made a lot of off the wall decisions and changes with their story lines in games. Birdo was once considered a male and then changed to a female. They also have described the Toads as genderless which is strange considering many of them definitely appear as either male or female. I believe Miyamoto also stated that in the current storyline, Mario and Peach are not in a romantic relationship and only friends.

It seems like there is a big lack of communication between Nintendo of America and Nintendo in Japan.

I'm amazed people have given so much thought into the logistics and fidelity of the storyline of a Mario game. It's not a story-driven franchise. None of it makes sense. Some franchises benefit from a canon storyline; Mario absolutely does not need one.

Okay, I'll play long. How about this for some retconning. Why doesn't Mario jump in Wrecking Crew? He can in every other game, but not that one. I guess they just needed to alter the story to help the gameplay along. We want consistency, damn it!

A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by every pebble on the road.

lol you'd be surprised how many people have though, this is just the tip of the ice berg. I agree that Mario is not a story driven game, but at the end of the day, people want answers and it's probably the longest and most recognized video game franchise there is.

There is actually a theory that Mario is a sociopath. Hilarious stuff.

@Klimbatize: You should see the Kingdom Hearts discussions. I'm surprised we haven't formed a religion yet.

@Rexcalibr: To be fair Matpat makes some valid points. Ever see the NA commercial for the first Super Smash Bros? For the longest time I always thought Mario accidentally tripped Yoshi, in reality Mario started it all.

Mario is one of the Mario brothers and Luigi is the other Mario brother.

How is that statement incorrect?

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

@UGXwolf: Not necessarily. The definition I found said it was when you add or alter information to a story's continuity
source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retroactive_continuity

"I'll take a potato chip... AND EAT IT!"
Light Yagami, Death Note
"Ah, the Breakfast Club soundtrack! I can't wait 'til I'm old enough to feel ways about stuff!"
Phillip J. Fry, Futurama

@MrMario02: Knowing what that stands for, I see how that definition comes about, but in that sense, wouldn't really anything that's not told to you at the very start technically be a retcon? The connotation is more important than the denotation, as that's what people hear when they hear a word. Retcons typically refer to story elements that ignore or contradict previous story elements.

On another note, MatPat ALSO did a theory linking the entire Mario universe to one story line:
