I hate sonic because he gets all of those golden rings and I don't...SO UNFAIR, and he doesn't trade those golden rings for cash like WTF. Kidding, kidding, i love Sonic, I just wanted to say that. but i could do without those Sonic in a 3D world type of games.

And when there is actual platforming, I find myself wishing it were back on autopilot because the jumping is so awkward. Fighting enemies is mindless -- and as if that weren't enough, you can basically take as many hits as you like as long as you don't fall asleep and forget to grab one of the bazillion rings that fly out of you.

Re: the awkward jumping. I have lots of friends who grew up mainly on Nintendo and Mario that believe this, but it seems like people who had Sega's didn't have this problem (and control Mario like a Chimpanzee with Parkinsons, like me). I like 2d Mario's ok, but I also feel like Sonic's far easier to control. I don't know if you've noticed that with people you know, but I have with my friends.

Mario did have more enemy variety, but the bosses in Sonic were way better usually. Mario is definitely the harder game to survive though. Sonic does give you lots of shields (especially in the later games) and it is easier to catch the rings than find a new power up. The challenge comes in when you're going for completion and need at least 50 to get into special stages, or if you're trying to get 100 for extra lives (not so much of a challenge with the bonus stages added in Sonic 3 & Knucles).

If you had the patience to beat the other games, you might enjoy Sonic 2 on Master System/Game Gear more. No spin dash and no rings on the boss stages. I think it's probably the hardest one out of all of them in some ways.

Agreed, Mario is far better than Sonic. Mario has been amongst the most popular character since the year 1981 when he started. He came out FIRST before Sonic, which the blue hedgehog himself started in 1991.

Well, I played Mario and Sonic as a kid. My complaints mostly arise from returning to the series as an adult, so I don't think it has anything to do with "growing up with Mario." Mario has a much greater range, especially when it comes to mid-air controls. If someone is better at controlling Sonic despite the limitations, I would think it more likely that's because they grew up with Sonic, personally.

And yea, I mentioned earlier that the bosses were by far the best part of early Sonic games and perhaps the only redeeming factor for me. It's a shame that Mario's bosses have not always been that great and often end up being pushovers. Unless Mario 2 USA or Yoshi's Island count, the only Mario with good bosses was the original, though obviously lacking in variety by today's standards. While I would be disappointed with a Sonic / Mario crossover that so dream of, I'd be quite pleased to see Dr. Robotnik pay Mario a visit.

Sonic is awesome.

Or was awesome. Sonic 1-3K were some of the best games I've ever played.

I use to play Sonic games back in the 8-bit/16-bit days. Until now I don't play his games most. I really wanted to try the 2D and 3D Mario games, after I got used to them more than Sonic's ones.

Sega doesn't really do well with 3D Sonic games, sadly. Miyamoto works really hard on both 2D and 3D Mario games, and that's why he's a genius.

Sonic's Genesis games are excellent. They are not just hit right on the dpad and jump. Anyone who says that I doubt got past the first couple levels of any of the games. Yeah, you can't control sonic while going through a loop...but that takes what? A second and a half? Yeah that's a problem when some levels, especially in Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles you CAN risk timing out on at 10 min.

There was lots of opportunity for level exploration, there are many slower, tricky, platforming sections, and you HAD to explore if you wanted to get enough rings (unless you were super awesome and never lost them) to get to special stages or FIND special stages. The DS games are a little bit too "hold right and jump" for me. They just throw an unjumpable bottomless pit that you don't have time to stop for once you see it. You have to anticipate it, so it's kinda cheap, instead of the fast sections followed by more precise platforming sections that requires you to control yourself as you slow down skillfully.

SA blew me away when it first came out too. It was the first big game for the "next generation" after the PS1/N64 era. Yeah, the camera was glitchy at times, but no more so then games from PS1/N64, so you put up with it. It was annoying to play as Big, but the Sonic type parts were still the meatiest. SA2 had a really good concept of light and dark stories, but it was annoying to have so many eggwalker and find the emerald shard levels, and the camera still had a few issues.

If they had IMPROVED off those games, the franchise would have been fine. Sonic team instead just thought up really cool gimmicks, but then never really took the time to polish the core gameplay. That's why Mario kills Sonic now. When Ninty comes up with a different idea, they create a new game around that idea itself (think the Mario 128 idea that turned into pikmin), so each can get the polish they deserve. Sega just throws a bunch of different things into one game and can't make any of the parts anything more than mediocre.

For a second, I thought you meant this and then I'm just like what:

Well, his first three outings were simple and fun - but then they decided to make him into a 3D character, and give him a massive 3D world. And the simple formula was ruined.

Cool story bro.

I don't hate Sonic, I just people who use reasons like: "Sonic games all sucked after <X game>", it's complete BS that's only your opinion. I thought about this the other day, but the reason people "hate" Sonic is because of their nostalgia filter clogging their senses. Sonic has never really changed all that much, but his fan base has. This isn't the 90s anymore, the whole "mascot with attitude" thing is dead, so Sonic isn't cool anymore. The games themselves haven't really changed all that much either: Sonic is a hedgehog, who goes fast. That's it. All Sonic games have that, except the god awful Labyrinth game. He goes through one rough patch and he's "ruined FOREVER", It's so stupid. Look, I understand you have you opinion, but my deal is that you have to back it up or else you're just spewing crap.

Just some random loser who loves a variety of things.

I actually don't hate the Sonic series. Sure, I like to make fun of it, but I don't hate, in fact I have most of the Sonic games, I love playing them. The only thing i really hate is Shadow the Hedgehog and how the series tried to be so dark back then when he came along, trying to implement some deep big plot into it that makes 0 sense and introducing guns and death and other things. It just doesn't work for the cartoony colorful world of Sonic. I'm happy with where the series is now, it's a lot more lighthearted and goofy.

Also, I hate the constant "original characters" that little kids on Deviantart and the like are making that look EXACTLY like Sonic and Sonic characters.

P.S. I don't mean Shadow the Hedgehog as in just the game, but the character entirely. He should have just never have been made. Like, worst video game character ever. EVER.
