Here's the list of difficulty: 1. Super Mario Bros. 3 2. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels 3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii 4. Super Mario Bros. 5. Super Mario World 6. Super Mario Bros. 2 7. New Super Mario Bros.
Why are people saying that SMW is hard? It could be because it was the only game I had on my SNES, and I played it for years, but I don't think it is hard. I thought SMB was harder... The only 2-d mario game that I played before VC was SMW, so this is the best I can do - 1 - NSMBW 2 - SMW 3 - SMB3 4 - SMB 5 - SMB2 EDIT - I forgot about NSMBW, so I fixed the list.
Well now that NSMBWii is out, I think I'm going to have to re-do my list! 1. New Super Mario Bros Wii 2. Super Mario World 3. Super Mario Bros 3 4. New Super Mario Bros 5. Super Mario Bros 6. Super Mario Bros 2.

@zezhyrule How is dodging tons of hammers while trying to jump on moving platforms easy? How is Trying to go under thwomps while trying to dodge little thwomps that are jumping not challenging? There's more to the game than flying over the levels in a cape you know.

Hmmm. Flying over levels with the cape? I might need to try that one day.
Random Note - I used to think that the cape looks like a tortilla chip dipped in cheese sauce when mario is climbing up a vine. And I always wondered how a feather turned into a cape. Another random note - My sisters always called the mushrooms soccer balls.

I always wondered how a leaf turned into a friggin' raccon!

There is if you want there to be. Personally I prefer having difficulty forced upon me in 2D platformers & the freedom to show off & experiment in 3D.
You can rack up items & yoshis so easily in SMW. If you did get hit by the hammer or thwomp you'd most likely have a cape or fire flower waiting. I'd say it's tricky to complete entirely but not difficult, & certainly not to just beat the game. Even warping to World 8 on SMB3 leaves a bit of a challenge. I would say SMW is better to play with someone else, so you can show off with the cape, & judge the other for flying accross the level with Blue Yoshi.

That's easy for you to say, I'm still stuck on that chocolate world.
If you go back and unlock the "Top Secret Area" level it makes the game a piece of cake. Hint: To unlock it you must find a secret exit in the game's first Ghost House
