Their school year starts in April, and ends in February. One month of summer vacation. Many schools also have their school week end on Saturday, leaving only one day for the weekend. Talk about unfair. I learned all this by watching my bro play Persona 4.

@ Stevie: It's not really. In the lower grades they finish earlier, but in the higher ones they often have classes much later than kids do here.
But wait until you get into the work force! Assuming you get a decent job, you'll have to work late some times, or on weekends, and you will be lucky to get 6 weeks holidays a year!
theirs a lot of school in N/a that have year around school insted of getting 3 month summer brake it slip into smaller week brakes mostly they are charter schools but hell the american government never really cared about school why else you think they give somany days off a year for stupid reasons and brakes
Wow! I knew the Japanese had more school years than we do, up to the 13th grade (if I recall correctly); but one month of summer vacation and solely a Sunday off? That's shocking to hear.
Japan is a relatively small island with very few natural resources for such a massive population.
From a young age Japanese people are bred and taught that they need to work hard to be productive and survive.
Japanese businesspeople typically work far longer hours than Americans, as well. I believe they're around 2, behind South Korea, which is the hardest working nation in the world, and just ahead of Australia.
