Should've said "yeah, I'm wearing Pikachu boxers. Wanna try to find the monster in my pocket?"

The fact that you kicked her out of your car was more immature than wearing Pokemon boxers.

Absolutely. Not to mention you're even more judgmental, refusing to associate with people who don't share your every view on things. Surely you must think some soap show, some reality show, or Twilight is pretty stupid - would you like to be dumped over such an opinion?

I'd rather be dumped over that than for my choice of underwear.

I'm picturing a situation with the roles reversed, where he sees her Twilight panties.

"Twilight panties, eh?"
"Yeah, I love Twilight. Don't you?"
"Eh..."
"You don't? You're one of those people who think it's dumb?"
"Well."
"Get out of my house. We're through."

Yeah. I bet you'd be complaining about this horribly shallow person you just got dumped by if that happened.

Well yeah, when you put it that way, but that's not exactly what happened here.

The difference is that the girl in RL was being very vocal and mean spirited about the boxers. In the second story, the guy was more indifferent than judgmental.

It was just boxers. Why would she be embarassed by JR wearing Pikachu boxers. It's not like someone will see through his pants and poke fun at the girl for dating a guy who likes Pokemon.

See, If I had a girl who liked Twilight or Hello Kitty, it would not bother me. Do I hate them? No. But I don't care about them. And really.. Do girls actually think guys use video games to show their manliness and secure their manhood? I have lots of female friends and they don't care that I love video games or even Pokemon. I wear my TMNT shirt and even have a TMNT backpack and they're not embarrassed. I know it's different as I'm not in a relationship, but I would hope the partner I'm with doesn't care that I like Kirby, Pokemon, TMNT.. I'd probably just look someone with near identical interests before jumping in.

Then again, I'm happy being single. Very happy

JayArr, if she was into something like Disney Channel (High School Musical, Hanna Montana) or evenJustin Bieber, would you critcize her and insult her?

FonistofCruxis

I can see why you did that, I don't see much point in staying with someone who won't accept you for who you are.

JayArr

I would never judge a woman on what shows she watches, movies she likes, or books she reads. It's just entertainment and there is absolutely no reason to look down on someone, and especially no reason to be mean, about something so shallow. Seeing that made me rage.

I will be the first to admit I over-reacted (I did in the OP in fact) but if you can't accept me for something so trivial as playing a game or wearing clothes supporting a game the eff you. You gotta be yourself and if someone can't accept that then you don't need them. That message is the reason I made this thread. Not for sympathy or reassurance on what I did.

Great lesson learned here. I'm going to have to remember this story.
You're right about accepting someone and not criticizing them for the things they like. A relationship just can't work that way. Some people will think your choice was dumb, but seems like the right thing to do,IMO. You stayed who you are and didn't completely change your personality/interests for girl. Good going dude

I couldn't have said it better myself =P
And in my opinion, you definitely did the right thing. There's no point in being in a relationship if you have to suppress your true personality and interests. Just give it some time. Fortunately, there are girls out there who don't see any problems in a guy who enjoys Pokemon hahah I actually didn't even own any Nintendo apparel until my girlfriend bought me a couple of badass mario t-shirts lol so just give it some time

i'm not really seeing one... in the end, the underwear is incidental — it may have triggered the conflict, but it's not the real reason the person in question was dumped. people are so focused on the underwear that they're not seeing that wasn't really the main issue, lol — it would've cropped up the same way as soon as she looked closely through his game collection or saw him bust out a DS (or in your scenario, as soon as he saw her reading one of the books or saw the DVD amongst her collection).

I think you overreacted quite a lot, man...I mean, I understand your feelings but throwing her out of the car? If she was so similar to you in all other areas, I would have tried to explain to her WHY you like Pokemon and let her play it. Would have been worth a shot, and if she still couldn't get over you playing a "kiddie game" THEN dump her.

And if it was me, I would have whipped out this quote:
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Wow, that's just... sad. If she can't get along with the fact you like Pokèmon and have Pikachu on your underwear then that's just sad on her part, you did the right thing.

Funny, because that describes him. He's the one dumping her for calling a game he plays "childish", after a failed (and horribly poor) attempt at defending himself by pretending it's not a game for kids... which it is. This entire situation involves his own insecurity and need for approval - he isn't capable of associating with people who do not share his views. Until he outgrows that silly fear, he won't be able to enjoy a healthy relationship.

That goes for all you guys agreeing with him, too. I'm willing to bet you're all single or have a nerdy partner who shares your exact tastes. He is definitely in the fault here, and your acceptance of his ridiculous actions doesn't exactly reflect well on you.

See that is where you are wrong. No, its not just boxers. Woman gather all kinds of signals about men especially when they first start dating. Woman want to date a "real man." Now, I know nothing about JayArr in real life and I am sure he is a real man and could be the manliest dude on Nintendolife that also happens to love Pikachu but the signal his choice of boxers gives off to women says "boy." It will remind them of their days babaysitting not spark attraction. You can pull off wearing whatever you want underneath your pants after you are in a serious relationship and you know each other better but even then dont expect to have an exciting time with your woman.

I don't mind if a woman like's Hello Kitty, if she is wearing that under her clothes then that would be a different story though. I dont know, maybe some guys may think it is cute but a woman doesn't think video game characters are cute. Awesome you like TMNT, so do I. My wife doesn't mind that I like TMNT but she sure as heck doesn't want TMNT to cross her mind at all during those special moments. I am not surprised you have lot of female friends who dont mind your TMNT gear. I am not trying to be mean here, I don't know you and we clearly have two different view points, but woman love having guy friends that don't signal attraction. You want to start dating some dimes, you got to change your wardrobe. But like you said you are happy being single. I personally love being married.
