Bakugan and Monsuno. You can SEE the similarities. The only good Pokemon clone was Digimon up to season 4, as that focused more on plot and less on the creatures themselves.

What comes to mind for me are Dragon Warrior Monsters and Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 for the GBC. The second one even had different versions in which you could get different monsters and trade them.

Add the similar throw-away stories, and thats where the similarites end, it's just a Dragon Quest game where monsters are your party members instead of people, and since then the game series have become even more separated.

I used to travel the stars, then I discovered Earth, and these incredibly addicting things called 'Video Games.'
And they said you couldn't buy happiness!

I agree with you mostly, but theirs no way you can say these games weren't released to cash in on the Pokemon fad. I wan't counting Joker 1 or 2 though.

Robopon is probably the worst rip-off on here so far though.

Sure you can...since Dragon Quest came up with the concept before Pokemon.

In all honesty the whole monster breeding concept was created from Shin Megami Tensei. Pokemon was a big hit by attracting younger and casual gamers with their own anime toys, cards, memorabilia, etc. Then everyone wanted a piece of that pie.

Some of them were actually good like The Dragon Warrior Monsters, most people hate this game but Robopon was awesome! I had a Robopon that was a truck and I used it to ride around the Robopon world.

But most of them were really lame and mediocre. DSiware game Crystal Monsters was mediocre...

Yes definitely DQ 5 did, but Monsters specifically was an attempt too. Not that it wasn't awesome. I own both and love them.

This is the game that got my 10 year old self to play something on GBC other than Pokemon Silver. That's impressive.

I hate to be that guy but honestly I hate how every monster raising game automatically becomes a pokemon rip-off. Dragon Quest V had reqruitable monsters back in 1992, predating pokemon by over 3 years. Yes DWM was probably aimed at monster raising fans but the similarities stop at the requitment method.

As a big Monster Rancher fan I can tell you than the series is in no way anything like pokemon. While it didn't come out before pokemon it did beat DW1 by about 2 years, the only game the series compares to. Monsters don't gain levels to grow stronger but rather train to increase stats and learn moves. Monsters are primarily created from disks or through combining, the handheld games are the only ones that don't. Battles take place on a 2D plane in real time, where players control the monsters and call out attacks in exchange for "guts".

I'll give you the first Robopon game since while fun more often than not only copies pokemon while adding its own twist. Digimon also seems to more often than not copy existing games' formula than make its own. DW1 copies Monster Rancher, Dawn/Dusk copies Shin Megami Tensei, and the rest of the games just copy typical RPG types.

Pokemon was in development since 1990. But Dragon Quest did have inspiration on Pokemon (such as the casinos).
