I can get a new phone in a couple of months and I dunno what to get. I'd prefer not to get an iPhone, I'm just not that keen on them, but if nothing else can do a similar job then I will get one.
I'm not overly bothered about apps etc, I just want a really good web browser so I can read gaming websites and post on forums. I also would like a decent mp3 player, ideally with a bookmark function since I rarely listen to podcasts in one go, and it takes forever to skip back to halfway through a two hour podcast (on my current Sony Ericsson, at least). Being able to download podcasts directly would be a huge bonus too, so I wouldn't have to transfer them from my laptop.
Other than that I really don't care, everything else can be bog standard. The main issue is a good web browser, if I can get a phone that can do that as well as the iPhone for half the price then I'm sold.
Advice would be much appreciated, I know absolutely nothing about phones. I've been told the HTC Hero is good, and also the Motorola Droid, although I don't seem to be able to find that in the UK (just the DEXT). I will almost definitely be using the Orange network btw, since a friend manages an Orange store and I'll be able to get a great deal.
Edit: Oh yeah, anything with a pull-out QWERTY keyboard (not touch screen) would be amazing, I've seen a few but not on anything that has been recommended to me so far, so I dunno if they're worth considering.
A good web browser and a QWERTY keyboard? I was going to suggest the Droid but you mention being unable to find it in your location. I've got a friend that raves about hit Palm Pre Plus, saying it's pretty cost effective if not exactly the most cutting edge phone out there.

The Palm Pre's not available on Orange unfortunately. I'll literally get rock bottom prices with Orange so I want to stick with them.
The best one I've seen so far is the Motorola DEXT, but I've only seen it online, I've never actually tried using one.
I would suggest a HTC Hero, but you're after a physical keyboard. The touch screen keyboard on a HTC is surprisingly responsive though, and clever enough to know when you hit the wrong letter. If you can demo one, do so. If it's defo a keyboard you're after though, they have a very nice touch/type phone.. http://www.htc.com/uk/product/touchpro/overview.html
Just make sure you get an Android enabled phone as opposed to a ring-fenced Apple, iPhones will only ever let you do what Apple allow you to, whereas open source is just that, meaning the possibilities are endless.
It's not so much the responsiveness of on-screen keyboards that gets me, just the speed at which I can type on them. They're fine for searches, but it'd be cool to be able to post on forums from my phone, and it'd take ages on a touch screen. I'll definitely check out that HTC Touch thingy though, I'm not really big on the design of the Motorola (its price is very appealing though).
And yeah, I'd definitely rather go for a non-Apple product, I've never liked their constrictive approach. Never had an iPod for the same reason, it just irritates me.

Typing can be done at a fairly decent pace on a touchscreen keyboard imo. With all the word correction stuff they got going on, it's really not bad at all.
