Yeah, I think it'd look really good w/o any slants and with some fancy pixel art. Mind you, the color scheme would stay mostly the same, just 8bitified.
I'll start mocking it up some time tonight or tomorrow.
I made Kid Tripp! PocketGamer gave it a 9 out of 10! You should totally buy it now!

You should call it Metroid Negative One Mission.
Loose your heart like a clumsy bell.

Hahaha. I'd actually like a few suggestions for a name for the game, if you have any. Something with "Lunar" in it would be kind of cool, since you'll see the moon throughout the game, and I may integrate it into the story.

You should call it Lunar Metroid Negative One Mission.
Or Metroid Negative Lunar One Mission.
Or Lunar Story.

Haha, Lunar Story. Here's the mockup. Didn't take long at all to draw, and I think I like it more than the other style.

It's a tough call, but I think I'd side with this style, too.

Well, if anyone's interested, my Java platformer's available to play online here:http://java.pynguins.com/platformer/Nice! I like the style and physics. It's still a WIP, but it's really coming along! Also, note that not all of the sounds have been added yet.

@Adam: Awesome, that'll make the game much easier to program, as I've made a library in Python geared towards retro games. You're going to have full gamepad support.
@Odnetnin: Haha, thanks - but you posted your response in the quote!

Just uploaded a new version. The gameplay's pretty much done. Anyway, enjoy the 5 levels and lame dialog.

@Brer: Awww. Do you get a "Loading..." screen? If so, just wait it out. Java's reeeeeeeeally slow at loading crap.
@SUPERZELDAMAN: Thanks! Well, making games in raw Java is extremely hard and hacky. First you have to know the language, then you have to learn its horrid media library (and then of course you have to know basic game logic). In fact, I don't think I'll be making another game in Java after this one - it's that bad. <3 Python.
