I don't think a tournament anime actually needs a literal tournament, but it does help. Mostly it just refers to anime with escalating series of fights. I don't think Bleach ever has an actual tournament, but the fights themselves are structured like one.

Was going to say this.

Don't get me wrong, I totally get the appeal to these kinds of shows. It's just that they usually end up stagnating character development and story development so that the show can roll on. Didn't One Piece have an arc where all of the characters got amnesia so that they could re-do all the character development done previously? Or am I thinking of another show?

That was a filler arc. In fact, I'm not even sure what you're talking about. Stagnating character development? Shows like those are constantly developing characters. Even Fairy Tail.

Haven't some of these shows been around for some time now though? Take One Piece for example, it's been around since 1997; character reboots and drawn out plots are virtually a given at this point.

"Even Fairy Tail" Actually I think Fairy Tail has even more reason for constant character development, given how much younger it is compared to the others and when you consider how characters are so come-and-go in the manga, the extra screen time everyone gets in the anime does make a real difference to the series.

On another note, Supernatural. Just Supernatural. Why.....

@Galvanic_Arcvn Let me guess, it's boring and has terrible acting?

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of: Poor and/or Inaccurate representations of the monsters (especially the angels, can't see them or your heads will explode my Augs), loathsome main characters who get saved by luck and resurrected more times that a comic book hero, somewhat expensive but visually unimpressive special effects and fact that there is really no monster vs monster action scenes when the plot clearly calls for it.

But that works too.

Actually reboots are really rare when it comes to anime adaptions, especially long ones. Dbz Kai is the only one I can think of. As for drawn out plots, some do that, yeah - Bleach would've been better if it was half as long as it is, and Dragon Ball Z was literally drawn out far beyond the point it was supposed to end. But most of the ones I've watched make good use of their time. Especially One Piece.

And I said "Even Fairy Tail" because as far as I can tell, it has no on-going plot, just a bunch of smaller stories loosely interconnected. It's not working towards a grand goal like most other anime of its kind. Yet still it manages a lot of character development.

Fair enough. As for Fairy Tail having an ongoing plot, it does have one it's just that it's so ambiguous and vague that it's easy to miss while your watching it. Something to do with disappearing dragons, the wizard Zeref, the future year X777 and Acnologia the Black Dragon of the Apocalypse.
