@Matty2310 I agree, the reason why I don't mention games like Pokemon Y, 3d World, Fates, or Brawl is because the general consensus from MOST people (as in, not the vocal minority) is that they're great games that sold really well, despite frequently getting lambasted by the super hardcore slice of gamers. That said, there's nothing wrong with believing these games to be overhated if you think that's the case. If anything, people that say most people don't like those games or don't think there anything special when that's blatantly not true annoys me FAR more then those who simply think they're overrated.

Yeah I see what you mean. I've never played Metroid: Other M but I do see fair bit of hate going it's way so there is a case to say a game like that is overhated (not gonna comment because I've never played it).

I enjoyed playing Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, really. I'm sure most people who played them do too. I could say they're overhated but I'd be overlooking all the people who love the game (but there's no problem thinking some of the criticisms and hate a game gets is ridiculous). I tend to enjoy Zelda games for what they are really.

I enjoyed Skyward Sword enough to play it through twice (Normal and Hero Mode), though I did have more free time then. I also enjoyed Twilight Princess (Wii) and hope to get to the Wii U version in a few months. Quite frankly, I'd say my least favorite Zelda games at this point are Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and Tri Force Heroes, but that's not to say that they're bad games.

A new one for the list (can't remember if it's been mentioned already):

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate - To be fair, I only played the demo of this one, but I did enjoy that demo and still regret not getting this game. Unfortunately, my funding at the time was a little tight and choices had to be made. I recall that it got a really polarized reception, though some of the hate there may be due to how the rest of the rebooted series was received.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

Payday 2. That seems to be the most recent "everyone pile on, hate and absolutely do not buy" game, completely irrespective of whether or not it's actually a good game and worth the investment.

To be honest I haven't played it yet, but just watching gameplay videos it looks pretty good and the amount of heat it's received is just mind-boggling.

@Tyranexx
I was bored to tears by Mirror of Fate and didn't get very far in it. I was SO worried about Samus Returns when I heard these chumps were at the helm. Thankfully, it turned out pretty great! You didn't miss much with Mirror of Fate though.

@Gaisaph Definitely have to agree about 358/2 Days. It's mission structure can get repetitive but the multiplayer as well as how they fleshed out Roxas, Axel, and Xion makes it a KH story that I really like. I also very much enjoyed the leveling system.

So zetta slow!

@Snaplocket The dam level in TMNT used to give me trouble a couple times, but now it's pretty easy. The last stage on the other hand is still the bane of my existence. The last section before Shredder is enough to drive anyone insane; I was only able to beat it twice.

Don't understand the hate for Skyward Sword's motion controls - they worked like a charm and never failed on me. In my opinion, it added a lot to the immersion. It is my favorite pre-Breath of the Wild Zelda game, mostly due to its control scheme and the art style.

I don't think Skyward Sword's controls are perfect but saying they don't work well in general just factually contradicts my playtime with it. I've never understood it, it is just a fundamental contradiction to what I experienced on a basic, almost non-subjective level.

Well, I don't personally hate them (except the bomb rolling). I was just comparing the hate they get to the hate Wii!TP's controls get.

The final Fantasy 13 trilogy. These games would be loved if they had a name other than final fantasy.

@faint
Nope. A cast of intensely unlikeable characters would be hated regardless of the game they're blighting.

I'd argue the opposite, since despite being a hallway game with a story no one understood or enjoyed, Final Fantasy XIII still got an 83 on Metacritic. Which is probably 20 more than it deserves (or would've gotten had it not been a main Final Fantasy title).

And that's me being kind and assuming there's non-aesthetic related value to the game despite its embarrassing shortcomings tbh (since my experience with the game is solely through its story).

Besides, the actual good Final Fantasy XIII came out before it. It's called Lost Odyssey.

@noobish_hat every modern day final fantasy has characters like this. I personally really liked lighting and hope.

@kkslider5552000 I did mention the trilogy didn’t I? The second one is a completely open experience. I’m speaking as someone who just finished all of them.

@faint "Dont worry. As a trilogy its good once you get past the original" is now the most underhanded compliment to a game after Nier Automato with "It gets good after two playthroughs"

I'd also throw my hat in and say 13 got more flak than it should have. Linearity didn't bother me at all and the lore was really awesome. Had its flaws though. That said, lightning returns makes up for them anyway

@YummyHappyPills I never said that. I said the second and third are far more open but I enjoyed the third. Don’t put words in my mouth.

@faint I didn't dislike FFXIII just because it wasn't a traditional FF game. I disliked it because there was no freedom to do anything more than run forward in a straight line, the battles somehow felt simultaneously difficult AND automated, making them a slog and unsatisfying even when you win them (how is that even possible?), and it has the most thoroughly unlikable cast of characters I've ever encountered in a JRPG. Oh, and let's not forget that this was the game that standardized bizarre, unpronounceable fantasy nouns in the series (L’Cie; Fal’Cie; Cie’th; etc.). Or the story that I couldn't make heads or tails of. Or the almost complete lack of NPC interaction.

I haven't played the sequels. They might be good, who knows? But FFXIII is a dumpster fire.

In my opinion, of course. I hear it was quite popular in Japan, and that mystifies me.
