The Acadamy Awards are rapidly approaching, so it only seemed appropriate that we start an Oscars discussion thread. Who should win best picture? Who will win best picture? Who got snubbed?

Here's my two cents: The best picture of the year didn't even get a nomination. That film was Where the Wild Things Are. A deep, visually groundbreaking film about the fear and confusion of being a kid, Where the Wild Things Are was every bit as visually stunning as Avatar, but it had the story to back it up. Max Records, the kid who played Max deserved a best supporting actor (or indeed best actor) nomination, but he got snubbed as well. What's really amazing is how it didn't get nominated for anything. Not even for best visual effects (obviously Avatar's going to win that one but WTWTA doesn't even get a nomination?)

But the Blind Side did get nominated. Profound ignorance, if you ask me.

I have not seen the Hurt Locker but I imagine it's a much better film then Avatar. HOWEVER, here's the way I see it: in 5 years time will anyone really remember The Hurt Locker? Nope. Avatar has already sealed its way into movie history, it's already a space opera classic, and it's already paved the way for every 'big' movie to follow. The Hurt Locker is a well directed, well written, well acted film, but I think when we fast forward a few years if somebody mentions "The Hurt Locker", the person next to them is going to say, "Huh? What's that".

Is Avatar Dances With Wolves in Space? Yes. It is an incredible film worthy of the Best Picture award? Well that's the debate, then, isn't it?

Also, Robert Downey Jr. deserved a best actor nod for Sherlock Holmes and a Best Supporting Actor nod from The Soloist, which is criminally under-rated.

I predict Hurt Locker (directed by James Cameron's ex-wife, BTW) for Best Picture and Avatar for Best Director due to political bias in the Academy. Avatar is a FOX production - no love there, but they can't snub it outright. Hurt Locker is a war flick, and what's better than keeping the anxiety of an unpopular war in the forefront of public discourse?

Lots-o-drama. I hope I'm wrong though. Love it or hate it, Avatar IS history.

Objection

Only one I'm big on is seeing Inglourious Basterds win at least Best Supporting Actor. Christopher Waltz was excellent.

History as in important to our society history or bye-bye history?

History as in a milestone in cinematic achievement and popular acceptance. I wouldn't go so far as to say "important to our society," though.

Despite my avatar, (ha, punny) I did enjoy Where The Wild Thongs Are more than Avatar. That said, I am really happy Up didn't get snubbed.

Hurt Locker will win.
She will wiin Best Director.
If James Cameron wins either of those I wont be very happy at all.
Marion Cottilard should have been nominated for NINE, but her song will win Best Original Song.
Sandra Bullock will win, with Morgan Freeman. Christopher Waltz and Anna Kendrick for best supporting.

I'm hoping for Hurt Locker. It was one of the best movies I've seen in some time.

Yes, yes he was.

No offense but Best Supporting Actress is the only sure win in this year's Oscars. Mo'Nique already has it wrapped up for Precious. Nobody in any category came close to her performance in relation to her fellow nominee's performances (unless you count Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart who should win but Freeman probably will simply because he played a figure like Nelson Mandela). Avatar should win in the technical and effects categories it has nominations in but if Cameron/Avatar wins anything else (Best Picture, Best Director) the Academy board of judges need to jump off a bridge. Avatar was epic to look at but the story was just plain pedestrian. Two other sci-fi films last year had way better stories (District 9, which is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Moon) but didn't have the ridiculous budget and all the 3D fanfare.

I just hope The Road gets some attention. The novel did so well, and No Country did well on screen, but after a million delays and a limited release, this movie seems to have gone unfairly unnoticed.

I've only seen Up and Avatar. I liked them both (Up more then Avatar), but I don't think that they both are worthy of an Oscar for best movie. Especially Avatar which I expect will take down the technical Oscars. Up takes down the Best Animation Movie Oscar and I'm really rooting for Morgan Freeman to win the Oscar. He is such a great actor and should have won it for Driving Miss Daisy and The Shawshank Redemption (haven't seen Invictus yet).

Objectively speaking, Up was probably the best movie of the year.

And I think State of Play deserved some sort of recognition--perhaps even a best picture nod. Certainly better than the Blind Side, for crying out loud. The Soloist is an underappreciated gem as well, and I think it's a darn shame that neither Robert Downey nor Jamie Foxx are getting any recognition for their brilliant performances in that film.

My two cents: (500) Days Of Summer & Sunshine Cleaning were snubbed as well as Amy Adams Zooey Deschannel and Emily Blunt. The Princess & The Frog should win best animated movie. I was really surprised by The Princess & The Frog, Up was an amazing movie, but I really thought this was even better.

This. Or District 9.

Still haven't gotten around to that one! Which is inexcusable, I know. Also, somebody here mentioned 500 Days of Summer. That was pretty good as romantic whatevers go (not sure if it's a rom-com, a rom-dram, but it was pretty good) even if it did try a little too hard to be "indy".

Really! I need to see Princess and the Frog (waiting for it to hit DVD) but I've heard nothing but good things. Sunshine Cleaning looked really good, too. I don't know how I forgot about that one--I love Amy Adams and Emily Blunt.

Again, here comes the kissing monster. But seriously, Emily Blunt is hardly recognized at the Oscars this year, and The Young Victorian was a real good movie. However, I think that will take out best Costume design and make up. However, CD may be a battle between NINE and Young Vic.
