Topic: Ocarinas?

I was looking around a shop recently when I found, of all things, and ocarina! It was a small thing, not many of them in stock, but I didn't buy it. However, has anybody here ever played one? Are they worth learning?

A few years ago, I was reading a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire book, and the £1,000,000 question was "What is an Ocarina?"!

What do you mean our Princess is in another castle?

I have one. They're pretty easy to play, but there are a lot of different variations on what can be called an ocarina. I love the instrument, myself, and not just because of its obvious fame from Zelda. I am a composer, and I like to use ocarina in my compositions a lot.

No offense to anyone who seriously practices ocarinas that may read this. Rock on...you.

Its probably worth getting if you're a huge Zelda fan. After viewing some videos on Youtube, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that "worth learning" depends on whether you plan on impressing yourself whilst you're on drugs because chances are, you're not going to make a musical career from it and the only females you'll impress with your mad ocarina skillz are your mother and the dorkiest of female Zelda fans... online.

What is an Ocarina? A wind instrument that won't get you laid. Where's my million dollars?

What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.

I heard it was like a flute. I might get one myself because it is easy to learn and it seems like a simple instrument like the recorder.

Suprisingly enough, I didn't buy my ocarina to get laid. I was born with a sense of perspective, and bought it entirely because I loved Ocarina Of Time. As of yet playing Song Of Storms on it isn't on my list of things which will impress women. In much the same way that if I were you, I wouldn't open a conversation with "hi, I call myself sykotek on a forum full of people who love Super Mario World."

@Raylax: Hi, I call myself sykotek on a forum full of people who love Super Mario World. I don't know why I said that since ocarinas are largely a part of Zelda, not Mario...? I was making a comment on if ocarinas were worth learning. Perhaps a bit more elaborate a way of saying it with examples, but I was, in my own way, attempting to inform the op that no one will care except for him, so it being worth it is solely up to him. Some people will also think he is a dork and to not expect to get fortune or fame from it. I know exactly where I'm posting, but I did forget to add, "Then again, posting on Nintendo Life forums won't exactly get you laid either."

I have one. It's a necklace with the triforce on it. It's freaking awesome.

If you're going to learn to play an instrument, might as well make it a good one that people respect. So in other words not an ocarina.

It's easy enough to learn and, obviously, portable as hell. You'd know better than anyone else if 1) you'd stick with it long enough to master it and 2) you'd want to know how to play it in the first place.

It's not nearly as versatile as a piano or a guitar, but it's infinitely easier to cart around, so it's really up to you and your needs.

Think of it as a harmonica, it can be fun to play around with, good on trips and such, but not normally used in compositions.

Depends what kind of compositions. Harmonicas are a stable instrument of folk music.

Philip_J_Reed

Yeah, harmonicas aren't difficult to find in popular compositions at all. Folk, blues, jazz, rock...that little mother gets around.

Ocarinas are a fun hobby and are really easy to learn, but playing them won't really help you accomplish anything. Personally, I love playing musical instruments and have thoroughly enjoyed learning to play all kinds of songs on them, but if you're looking for something further than a simple hobby then you should look elsewhere.
But if you do want to buy some, then you should take a look at some of these sites:
