Video games are fun and all, but sometimes it's just as nice to sit around a table for a board game, or a card game, or anything else besides. With that in mind, I present the thread for discussing non-video games!

I'm a big fan of board and card games, so here's a few of my favourites that I've accumulated over the years - I enjoy playing each and every one of them:

Monopoly
Boulderdash
Stratego
Dungeons and Dragons
Contract Bridge
Poker (I prefer 5 card draw, but Texas Hold 'Em is the default these days)
Chess
Oltre Mare (A really neat trading game)
Guillotine (A wildly entertaining card game)
Killer Bunnies (ditto)
Grimm (Roleplaying game set in dark fairy-tales)
Backgammon
Scrabble

I've also recently discovered some Japanese games - Koi Koi and Shogi, which, now I understand how to play them, are great.

I've never had the chance to, but I've always wanted to learn Mah Jong too. Mabye this year.

Chess and Monopoly are fun non-video games.
I also like playing card games, like Cribbage, and Rummy 500.

Stratego rocks
Monopoly is awesome too, it's pretty much the only board game I play with friends.
For card games, I play poker (Texas Hold'Em) all the time, semi-professionally.
500 and Euchre are good games too.

I love 500 and Euchre. Very pleasant, easy games to play. I learned those two games as a kid, and then Contract Bridge was easy to pick up on later.

My old favorite card game is called **** the dealer ( a drinking game with cards ).
Board game - Battleship

Shogi is my favorite traditional form of chess. Xiang Qi (Chinese chess) is also fun, though it seems more limited than Western chess. Go really interests me as well, but I just can't figure out strategy. I would need someone equally interested and terrible at it to practice with, but alas, it was not to be.

Stratego I've played in multiple forms as well. The original being my least favorite, but still fun. Ultimate Stratego is much better, both in 2P and 4P games. Stratego Legends combines Stratego and Magic the Gathering, sort of, and is just so full of possibilities if you aren't intimidated by how much there is to learn off of the charts since they can't fit ability descriptions on the pieces themselves.

I think Cosmic Encounter is the greatest game of any kind ever made and am greatly looking forward to the upcoming expansion for the current edition. The same company also made Dune, which is my second favorite game. I moderate a small forum for playing Dune online. That is a real blast.

What I would love most to try would be Dungeons and Dragons, or any RPG (preferably something simple). Never had the opportunity before. I heard there are applications for Google Wave that practically run the game for you, so I need to look into that...

Hey, if you're keen to give D&D a go, and there are other people interested, I run Google Wave games, I'm happy to introduce you.

Go is a weird game. It seems very easy, but then you run into someone who is good at it, and you're screwed.

I don't find the title of this thread misleading at all.

How?

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

StarBoy91

I remember playing some other board games when I was little. Unfortunately, I can't remember the titles of the other board games.

Re: D&D on Wave
That'd be awesome! I don't know anyone personally who'd be interested, but I'll check with some people I play Cosmic and Dune with online. Maybe others from this forum would be interested, too? How many players are ideal for a game? How does it work, do we need to be online at the same time to play "live"?

Edit: Already got one person interested! He's also never played before.

@Slapshot
Connect 4 is great. I went through a brief phase last summer where I was playing it online a ton. It's pretty limited, but it's still a lot of fun. I like playing the large "board" versions.

Been playing D&D with 5 friends on and off for as long as I can remember.

There he goes, Firkraag. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. - My VGscore

Ideally we'd need 5 + 1 Dungeon Master (me) - so you and four others. Google Waves don't go away when users disappear, so technically you can play in a "play by post" kind of manner. It works better if everyone is online at once (but that's difficult across time zones), but I've done both ways, and they're both good fun.

Firkraag

I'm having a hard time imagining D&D as fun when it's online, unless you do it by skype or something. But I've never tried anything other than locally with my friends so I wouldn't know.
