  • This IS a thread for discussing what, how and why Nintendo is getting things wrong
  • This IS NOT a thread for defending Nintendo/Nintendo products
  • ALL THE COMMUNITY RULES STILL APPLY: be respectful, no profanity, nothing inappropriate, no derogatory comments about specific people, whether they are active/present in this thread or not, etc. etc.

Background

Occasionally I see people referring to the NL boards as 'toxic', and while I feel that word is an exaggeration, we definitely see a certain amount of aggro between users, and I figure most of the time it revolves around conflict between those who tend to be optimistic about Nintendo and its products, and those who tend to be pessimistic.

So I thought it would be worth trying a thread dedicated to those users who aren't optimistic about Nintendo in general, and/or about any specific hardware/software associated with Nintendo, or based on any articles posted by NL. That way, those users can chew the problems (as they see them) over without having the 'fanboys' chiming in telling them that they're wrong and it descending into Mod-intervention territory. The thread could also serve as a place for Mods to direct users to if they're overly downbeat about a topic elsewhere on the site.

Let's see how this goes. My idea could sink without a trace, or blow up in my face and need locking inside 24hrs, but it could possibly be a constructive addition where people can have their say without getting flak for being a 'hater'. Do me proud, Nintendoomers!

I was just about to lock this thread when I saw the title

As long as the thread remains civil, I don't see the problem.

Anyway, to get the conversation started, Nintendo has dropped from one of my favourite game devs to somewhere in between all the other devs. They used to be known for their high quality games; but the overall quality of their games have dropped. There are some exceptions, but many of their recent games lacked the polish they used to have. I still think that TP:HD was a cheap remaster, amiibo Festival was terrible with its amiibo locked content, so was Mario Party. Mario Tennis lacked in content overall; and Star Fox was another terrible excuse to sell the GamePad. Not a big fan of amiibo and the forced "innovative" controls in general.

Of course, that's not even taking the huge drought into account; there's barely anything left on the Wii U; It's a joke.

I don't really know anything about Nintendo, but it seems like, for a company that's achieved relative success fairly consistently over the last 30 years, it's totally underinvested in itself. Nintendo should be embarrassed to cite the jump to HD as an excuse for a drop in the output of new games - that sort of thing should have been anticipated and planned for with appropriate staff resources to take care of it. Same goes for LoZ: BotW and having to bring in 100 staff from Monolith Soft to help out. That sort of practice makes sense if you're a young company trying to expand, but when you're supposedly one of the industry leaders (based on past software sales), a game like BotW, in 2014-16, should not stretch the company as much as it has, particularly when so few other main titles have been released.

I want to believe that Nintendo has been keeping a massive NX launch underwraps, with top quality games from every genre, classic and new IP represented equally, etc. but from what I've seen over the last couple of years, I don't think it's going to happen. Nintendo needs to think and act bigger to compete.

Nintendo should focus on:
1. The games for their console
2. The power of their console (which NEEDS to be at least as powerful as the Xbox One)
3. Focus on innovation last

Nintendo does these things in a different order and that's what kills them.

The problem with Nintendo I see is just the fact the have really good competition with Sony and MS and they still want to do things their way.

The reason Nintendo was so successful in the earlier 80's is because they had no competition so to speak (Yeah Sega was around but due to internal problems they weren't as focused as MS or Sony) and as a result held a strangle hold on the gaming industry with stuff like their lockout chip, making third parties only having the ability to put out so many games per year. Once Sony and later MS came out and proved that they were going to be around for awhile third parties and consumers alike didn't have to deal with Nintendo and their horrible policies. Due to that Nintendo just doesn't seem to know what to do. They want to be different but it just isn't working. People want something that can play their Nintendo IPS but also third party IPs with power similar to PS and Xbox. Once Nintendo figures that out, then maybe they will do better.

I love Nintendo's innovations but they never quite 'nail' it. What I mean is, why can they not evolve while the revolutionize. Where did the analogue triggers and quality analogue stick go from the gamecube (Not the c-stick nub thing ) It's a small thing I know, but man the gamecube pad was glorious and I would have loved for them to develop that further aswell as introduce new tech like the touch screen. If the gamecube pad had evolved to the Wii U pro controller then it would have been perfect.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

Wished Miyamoto would lay off a bit.
Not everything needs a grand spanking new idea or gimmick. Just make FZero damn it. Make the cars transform into flying space vehicles if you have to! and play somewhat like Project Sylpheed or something. Just make games!

Nintendo is doomed because the Wii U isn't stable enough to cope with Mighty No. 9. The Wii U can actually be bricked by that game.

Nintendo shouldn't have made the move on Mobile......now its gonna be harder for us to believe Nintendo will never move away console gaming.

THIS. So much this! Not everything has to be "revolutionary". Sometimes, people just want to play some damn video-games! Also, can I just say that I hate the restrictions he put on Paper Mario? Because I do. Very much so. Oh, and also, because I've seen people defend Miyamoto's decisions in recent years because of what he's done in the past, just because you've done good things in the past, doesn't mean that you automatically get a free pass when you screw up, and there is no denying that his decisions in the past few years have done more harm than good.

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

@gcunit If expressing unpopular opinions is already giving me lots of flak, what makes you so sure this thread won't give any flaks even though you stated that defending isn't allowed?

Now here's a legit source of Nintendoom, UK is leaving the EU so does this spell the end of Nintendo's support in the UK?

@Grumblevolcano Eh. As bad as Nintendo performs in the UK, they're not Xbox in Japan levels of bad. Sincerely doubt they drop the UK.

Anyways, I don't think NX will have much of a chance with 3rd parties. I just don't think the market wants a Nintendo console anymore.

@Grumblevolcano It's going to take a while though. I don't think a lot is going to change, but Nintendo may switch their approach to Europe. Nintendo UK was always a separate thing with its own store and events; despite the fact that the German and French markets are bigger. Who knows? Maybe we'll get a Nintendo EU store as a result, perhaps a Nintendo DE or FR store, I certainly wouldn't mind. One thing's sure, it's not a positive thing for any company.

I just think Nintendo push some of their ideas out too soon. The Wii is s clear example of this, and part of the reason on why I think they're in the situation they're in.
I honestly think that Nintendo should have waited until this gen at the earliest to bring out motion control gaming, and used last gen as their first HD console instead. This would have given them equal time to have gotten used to HD development as Microsoft and Sony, instead of having to catch up.
I also think that the Wiimote technology would be better and the current WiiU specs quite possibly would have been far closer to the PS4 and XBOX1.

@lilith it's a shame things turned out the way they have. I still had fun with the Wii though, so it's not all bad.
