All fan-based (ie. not multi-platform) sites/mags, etc. are at least a little biased toward their company of choice (despite their protestations to the contrary) either through their own bias or to pander to the bias of their audience. Scores for Nintendo games on Nintendo based sites are usually pretty easy to predict. One thing to always look out for that I've noticed is that if there's an issue in a Nintendo game that they're reviewing, they'll word it like "some people might find this annoying" or "some people might think this is an issue". Basically they've acknowledged a problem with the game, but haven't got the balls to actually call the game out on it themselves so as to keep the score high.

Pros and Cons list do nothing but give your readers another excuse to not read your reviews. Nintendo Life was built with writers who actually know how to write and do so in such a way that it actually makes the readers want to read their reviews. The problem with the majority of websites today is things like Pros/Cons sections and to be blatantly honest, a scoring system in itself.

This is the main reason that I came to this site and spent two years writing for the Nintendo Life network of sites.

But, jeez this thread got revived after a long hiatus! Haha But my opinion on the subject, this is an independent Nintendo site, if you came here not expecting some bias towards Nintendo, well, that's kinda your own fault. Of course, it's going to have some bias!

For the record, I love Nintendo Life's reviews. So what if I think that Cave Story, VVVVVV, MGS:SE3D, and BIT.TRIP FLUX deserved 10/10s and World of Goo should've been a 9/10? That just means I happened to feel differently about those games than the reviewers did (probably). For all I know, the reviewers and I might actually feel the same way about those games, but they interpret Nintendo Life's scoring policy differently than I do. Bottom line, it's best to ignore the score and just read the review to see if the author's opinions lines up with yours.

I don't even bother looking at other reviewers- Nintendo Life owns my trust.

while i agree with you, if people want a 'pros and cons' thing, they have the right to make it a formal request via the Feedback area. as always, whether anything is actually implemented is entirely up to the directors :3

The reviews aren't directed to anyone. It's like the reviewers take the scores everyone reading this site would give it and use the average

You monster. Portal reference aside, the game is pretty much bursting with joy and happiness. How could you bring yourself to return it? D:

I didn't really like Art of Balance, although I could see how other people would. Drop Zone: Under Fire though is probably the biggest regret of a game I've ever bought based on an NL review. I played it for 2 hours and found it nowhere near as entertaining as the review. I found the game so soulless, awkward to play, and painfully full of content that I really question how anyone could possibly enjoy it without being under the influence of something.

Probably for the same reasons you can't say enough nice things about that Jason Rohrer trilogy and I couldn't relegate it to storage on my SD card quickly enough — you liked it, he didn't. :3

Yes actually. I hate the DS version with ever fiber of my being (it was my first DS game, sold it a while back), and I love the Wii one to death for its level design and multiplayer. I was very negative about NSMB2 from the day it was announced to close to when it came out, but so far every level has been so dang fun that the complete lack of innovation/newness has yet to bother me.

We'll see how I feel after a few more worlds, but for now...I love this game.

Edit: @TBD I acknowledge that my taste in games often doesn't align with that of others, and of course that's totally fine with me. I'm just genuinely surprised that Slapshot didn't enjoy the game, since I can't see why he wouldn't love it. I'm sure he has legitimate reasons for his opinion, and I was exaggerating my disgust/surprise in a joking manner, but I'm interested to know why he feels the way he does.

You know that with .5's this would just be a /20 rating system and if a website has /5's and .5's it's the same as NL's system since a 4.5/5 is the same as a 9/10
