(pix drops in. sees Chrono_Cross is being negative nancy about Nintendo again. sees Chrono_Cross making snarky comments at other users again. pix drops out.)

Sony will catch up as it has been doing for the last two years. PlayStation is only around 5 million units behind the 360 in terms of console sales. And with such a profitable online store and AAA games releasing this year (God of War and Last Guardian), Sony is going to catch up sooner than later I assume.
Yes, let's stay on topic, shall we?

@Chrono_Cross: pix pretty much nailed it on the head. it is possible to be negative without being a jerk to other people, but you've proven time and time again that you do not know how to do so, and now I'm having to deal with you luring in randoms with your bait? beware the line you tread.

I responded to Shingi's post who had a purposeful post that actually added to the conversation (instead of posting a link that has nothing to do with this thread). No harm done there.

Sorry. I'll watch my mouth next time.

Though I think their online strategy has been pretty poor to say the least, looking at their position last gen then it at least improves on that so while broadening the audience may not have sold as much games as they would have liked I don't think it was a total failure compared to where they where.
It's good for Nintendo to finally admit their many horrible mistakes. But actions speak louder than words, and I need to see some action before I can take their words seriously (or they can merge with Sony).
I know they've made their mistakes in the past, but it's good they've admitted them. Also, if 3DS is any indication, they've come a looong way already. I have an iPod Touch, but I've been much more satisfied with what I've found on eShop, than I have with what's offered on AppStore.

I guess that's because Vita had good launch titles and getting good games within half a year of a system's launch isn't what people want.
Or maybe releasing gaming systems early in the year is a dumb, dumb idea, I dunno.
Probably the latter. Too many people recovering from Christmas, I guess.
actually, in terms of the US with these early-in-the-year releases they could be aiming for people getting their tax refunds back. i know that's how i had the money to be able to pick up my original 3DS when it hit, haha :3

Sony can't afford a merger

What? The dude who wrote this article seems a little butthurt about Nintendo.
Seriously though, I'm sick of these self-righteous 'hardcore' gamers that throw their toys out of the pram whenever Nintendo does something they don't like. Oh, and I like how this little quote from Iwata was omitted:
"On the other hand, we wonder what would have happened to the video game industry if we had not made efforts to expand the gaming population, and whether you would be able to see a bright future for a kind of entertainment in which the number of new consumers was not increasing.
"From these viewpoints, my belief has not changed at all. Without making efforts to increase the number of new consumers and make video games accepted positively by society, we cannot expect a brighter future than now, so we will continue to make these efforts."
Nintendo's 'casual' strategy has not "failed", as the OP so errenously put it (95 million Wiis can't be wrong). Iwata and Nintendo are just making it clear that there has been a disppointing follow-through regarding software sales, and that they are re-focusing on the "depth" (core) along with the "width" (casual). They are not abandoning their 'blue ocean' strategy. Why would they?
yeah, regular journalism often doesn't have the credibility to not conveniently ignore everything except what they want people to hear, why would gaming journalism be any different? (GAMING POLITICS ZOMG!!!)
