Topic: Next classic edition

I know this is pure speculation but any insights as to why they haven’t announced the next classic edition? Sources before were saying they will probably release the N64 Classic Edition later this year but it doesn’t look like it’s happening.

I assume they'll spend a year building and selling NES and SNES minis. Expect an N64 mini next year.

They’ve also gotta get the rights to distribute Mischief Makers again. Shake, shake!

@Alikan
Next year is a long way off. Given the relative lack of first party Switch titles this year they should have released an N64 Classic this fall to help ease the drought.

@Don I don't think I'll be feeling the drought.
September: Valkyria Chronicles 4 and 20 NES games
October: Mega Man 11, Super Mario Party, Starlink
November: Pokemon Let's Go, SNK 40th Anniversary
December: Super Smash Bros, Atari Flashback

I think I've forgotten a couple I bought, and that have yet to come out. But I can't say I've felt a time where I thought would was really needed was another retro console.

No sources were ever saying there'd be an N64 classic this year. Or ever.

It's just been random people online speculating based on nothing, and then other people parroting those people.

I honestly think we're much more likely to see new iterations of an NES or SNES classic (with changed game lineups or just a larger amount of games, similar to the Atari Flashback business-model) long before we see an N64 classic.

Yeah, I'm just not sure how the logistics on an N64 classic would work because of the controller. They are much bigger than the NES and SNES ones, and you would need 4 to get the intended effect out of having an N64. Unless they completely redesigned it, I don't now how they would fit one in and be able to make it compact enough for this range of re-releases, let alone 2-4.

@Xyphon22 : My thoughts exactly. Its library also isn't diverse enough IMO, and many of its games haven't aged well at all. Star Fox 2 and the original honest-to-God Yoshi's Island in the SNES mini were surprising and very welcome inclusions, but N64's first-party library is arguably lacking, and many of N64's more popular third-party titles (especially the likes of Goldeneye and Banjo-Kazooie) are unlikely to be included in the mini.

The fact that the unit will need to be larger and more durable will also significantly drive up the cost of the console, which would defeat the purpose of making one at all (I imagine that a 50% price hike over, say, the mini SNES will put off a lot of people).

I just want Nintendo to distance themselves from this mini console nonsense and dump the games on a Switch cartridge instead. The mini consoles are a cute novelty and all, but I just can't see myself ever using them. Why plug in multiple consoles when one will do?

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

Unlike the NES and SNES, classic editions, I would have little to no interest in a N64 classic edition.
I was never impressed with the N64/Saturn/PS1 generation as a whole. It was the first time in my life I lost interest in video games and it lasted for a long time. Despite a very small handful of games of that era, I always wished the industry would have stayed with 2D or 2.5D for one more generation and waited a few more years for hardware to be ready for 3D. I have a feeling the world would have got some of the best 2D games during that time if the industry would have not been obsessed with going 3D.

@Don Regardless of whether there is a "drought" or not, selling another (mini) console isn't going to fix that drought. If the argument is "look, we don't have a lot of Switch games, but please buy this other system from scalpers on eBay at an inflated price", then that's not a great argument at all

@ReaderRagfish @Octane You know what would make me buy one? Robotech: Crystal Dreams.

@Octane
It would definitely help tide many over until the next game they are waiting for. 15-20 games should provide hours upon hours of play time.
