If you want a PC for gaming go a desktop over a laptop. Gaming causes laptops to heat up really bad thus making them have a short life span. Unless by gaming you mean stuff like Facebook games.

There are good gaming laptops, far better than what existed a few years ago. Though it's unlikely you'll be able to get all of the things at once. I'm not going to suggest something specifically because I don't know what sort of deals are available in your area. However this video is a pretty good guide in any case.....

There are certainly good laptops specifically designed for gaming (more powerful components, more open space for better air flow, etc), but they cost more than $1000 this side of the pond, not sure what that works out to in £. Also keep in mind that with a proper gaming set up, you're going to need peripherals, which can bulk up the entry cost quite a bit. If you're not needing to go all "hardcore" though, go with some cheap-ish Logitech periphs. Yeah, Logitech is your dad's PC accessory company, but they've been around for 30 years for a reason. You can get a perfectly functional mouse with fantastic build quality for under 20 bucks.

One thing I would recommend though is to buy a cooling pad if you're going to be using your laptop for gaming. They're relatively inexpensive and can make a big difference in core temperature, thus better power efficiency, lower noise, longer life, etc.

Personally, for general use laptops, I've been using Vaio products for years now and I love them. They come with a bit of bloatware, but it's easy enough to remove and they're otherwise good machines. Little pricey though, for what you're actually getting. I find that Acer and Asus offer a decent "bang for your buck" line of products. You can find a good machine for under 1000 from either of those brands.

This is a little silly, but my perception of MSI is perhaps permanently tarnished after they made the worst gaming advert ever. So much cringe.
