That said, anyone with an opinion is going to be biased in some manner. It's just a matter of whether or not they reveal their personal biases beforehand. :3

[16:44] LztheBlehBird: James doesn't know the rules? For shame!!!
Good point, TBD. Most mags/sites don't tell you up front what the personal tastes of the reviewers are. You have to piece it together over a long period of reading their reviews instead. I miss the period in which NPower had the reviewers list the genres from most to least favorite...I could always count on the guys with taste most resembling mine (Adam the Slime) to tell me what's good for ME!
As far as that goes, NLife doesn't do that, either. The difference is that I've gotten to know the reviewers on the forums and in chat. Such in-depth knowledge of taste comes MUCH faster that way than by JUST reading reviews.

I used to read a lot of Kotaku, 1up, and IGN, but since attaining this position here, I find I don't have much time, not to mention I don't want to cloud my thoughts on games I might have to review.
That's ANOTHER thing you have to give NLifer's like Corbie credit for: Trying to avoid excessive hype about games from other sources. Sometimes, hype can be the worst review killer. Just look at all the people who were disappointed with Assassin's Creed!

The only possible answer I can give is Game Informer.
lololololololol.
IGN, 1up, and Gamespot are pretty good about giving favorable reviews. And Destructoid is technically biased against everyone, according to one of the guys that works there. He said he tries to call out the faults in every system and company equally.
I realize you think everyone's out to get Nintendo, Smash, but that's really not the case.
IGN's pretty good, if you stick to the reviews and not the hit generating opinion pieces. For full budget retail games I'm interested in, I usually look there for a second opinion along with NLife. They get a lot of crap here for "hating on Nintendo," but it's generally not them bringing down big game's metacritic scores. I find their reviews are just more geared towards multiconsole owners trying to decide between the entire PS3 or 360 and Wii libraries what game they should buy next, and they review as such. NLife mainly compares games to only the Wii or DS library, so if you only have Nintendo or know you're in the mood for Nintendo games, then it's great for that. The reviews are aimed at slightly different audiences, but I think can both be useful to everyone (usually). It really does just depend on how similar your tastes are to the reviewers, at the end of the day. Same with movies, music, or anything else.
I haven't really run into another site that's quite up to the professionalism of those two, so that's where I go usually.
Postin on mah DSi, so I didn't read everything but I'm pretty sure someone called me a slime. Guess I'm not as popular as I used to be.
I agree though, Stuffleupagus. I think reviewers should include personal profiles describing their gaming tastes, habits, preferences, etc. I also greatly appreciate when the writer includes personal context within the review. NL usually doesn't, but recently the Pilotwings reviewer offered some very interesting personal history with the game, especially relevant to the realm of VCdom.
In my opinion, the review itself, not the score, is all that matters. Also, I mostly just listen to things about controls, and other things that aren't mostly opinon oriented. For instance, when I watched the IGN review for NSMBW, I think they had good points on things like controls and difficulty, but they just bombed it on "originality."
Just let it happen.

Okay, embarassment time! It wasn't Adam at all, but ALAN! DOH! See here to see why I referred to him as a "slime." Actually, it was his coverage of RPG's (his favorite genre) that I really liked. Anyway, this is all rather non-sequitor.

I wouldn't agree with that, actually. Personal taste is obviously a key factor, but our own Corbie Dillard has on more than one occasion made point to consider other people's thoughts when reviewing a game. I think Phillip AKA Chicken Brutus may have done so at least once as well. We've got an awesome group here like that.
Are you saying Corbie has has on more than one occasion not written a terrible review, and Chicken has written at least one not terrible review?
Because I sure hope that in every review I read, the reviewer will consider the thoughts of others.
@Digiki: I would hope that as well, if it were not for past experience indicating otherwise. The VAST majority of reviews nowadays (outside of NLife, and there are still some glaring exceptions around here as well coughmynotebookcough) seem to consider only the personal opinion of the person writing it, without any consideration for difference of opinion whatsoever. The kind of writing I had in mind when referencing Corbie and Chicken Brutus is quite rare from what I've read, actually.
So I suppose you could say that most sites/mags have terrible reviews, by that definition. Which isn't too far from the truth, actually...especially when it comes to Wii games.

I can only think of Destructoid. As for IGN, I feel that they can't really be part of the bias/non-bias discussion because they have separate teams for covering the three major consoles. Just remember people; opinions.
