So, my toy poodle just had her first litter ever at the rather old age of 10 years. At first she seemed scared of the first puppy that came out of her, she was all like "omg did that just came out of me? ew!" and avoided it, some time later when she was more relaxed she had other two and we were all "awww", "cute", "kawaii~ <3"... But some hours ago she became a complete monster, she won't let anyone get near (i can get near enough to pet her, but she still growls angrily at me and looks me with these killer eyes) http://www.getaris.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/HPIM39... <photo of her from a few years ago.
The main problem is.. we got a dachshund a few months ago, a very very annoying little pup btw, now every time she sees poor little Shoeshine she goes after her like a crazy rabid dog (then Shoe runs like a chicken to where i'm sitting and hides under my arm in a rather cute way). Even hearing her in the distance will result in her being chased.
Is this common? i mean, my pit bull also had her puppies recently and, for a pit bull, she is very relaxed.
(she also seems to hold a personal grudge against my brother)
It's not uncommon. Most animals, even domesticated ones, have a very strong instinct to protect their young. She'll likely phase out the behavior after the pups are a little more self-sufficient.
well, she seems to hate our dachshund... it's almost as if she heard puppy cries, goes to investigate and all she finds is that annoying puppy that's not hers, then thinks "i heard a puppy, i bet that dachshund is hiding it" >bersek
Apparently she had another puppy whie we where out a few minutes ago.
It's was hard to tell, all we found was a head.
She. Ate. The. Newborn.
please someone tell me it was something she needed to do for some reason.
Yeah they do that sometimes. Many animals do. Often it's an instinctual response to thin out a litter (so the stronger have a better chance to survive), or when they know that one or more of the young are not destined to survive long (birth defects, etc).
Actually, when you first mentioned how many pups she had, i wondered if this would happen, but it's kind of an icky situation to bring up.
It's freaky to humans (obviously), but normal for animals, so don't get overly concerned about it.
By the way, abgar, just in case, don't play Nintendogs near her. Bell was warning you. A kid got his lip bit off by their family dog and a relative blamed it on the fact that the kid was playing Nintendogs at the time. Maybe there's nothing to that logic, but still, I wouldn't risk it!
