For me that is Ultima 1 on the NES. God I kept getting killed constantly even at the beginning when leveling. I did not play for long. Still to me the toughest RPG ever. Wizardry 1 for NES was second.
The first one? Yeah that was hard. I loved how DW3 used that world in the game.
DW3 is still my fav. I played 1 though 6 and 9 of the main series. I hope they put the GBC version of DW3 to be downloadable on VC.

Yeah although it doesnt help that that was my first RPG and the only reason I got the game was because it was a subscription bonus from Nintendo Power. I had no clue what I was doing where to go etc. I remember I tried to figure out what was going on but after awhile I just got frustrated with it and go on to another game.

Final Fantasy 1 is abysmal to get through. Original version. I have pretty strong stomach for grinding and slow games and even I couldn't get past basically the 2nd town before I gave up. It is so bad.
Phantasy Star II, technically available on Wii VC. My goodness, that game has the most masochistic dungeon design. I remember there being one with a good fifty teleporters spread across five floors, or something like that D:
FFII had its moments of annoyingness (making you go through an ice dungeon where all the enemies are weak to fire and resist ice - you level up your fire spell, and then the game gives you a boss only weak to ice magic) but it wasn't too bad once your characters could comfortably fight most enemies.
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

Phantasy Star 2 was also on GBA as part of Phantasy Star Collection. I thought 1 was harder. I liked 3 though.
