Melee is better in terms of Gameplay. It was faster and was more intense.

Brawl has more stuff and is still really fun.

So what exactly about Brawl wasn't quality? (except for the Subspace Emissary maybe; I still liked it a lot because it was a good way of getting into the game and the cut scenes were pretty neat)

Brawl owns Melee. Sure, Subspace Emissionary (is that spelled right?) wasn't that good, but it at least tried to give a solid single-player experience. And if that didn't improve the single play experience, Wi-Fi play did. Sure, it can be slow at times, but otherwise it was pretty good (especially when playing with a friend) and it allowed you to beat on a sandbag while you were waiting for match-ups. The controls were completely flexible from changing the button configurations to letting you use one of 4 different controllers. Plus, there's a heap more content, with many characters and stages, and the ability to make your own stages. And obviously the graphics are better, go to the Temple stage on Brawl, then play the same stage on Melee and you'll know what I mean. All the good characters from Melee are in Brawl (except for Mewtwo, who was replaced with Lucario) and they managed to squeeze in a few Melee stages and keep all of the items. And @Kingbuilder, Brawl has the same quality as Melee, Brawl just boosts the quantity. So there, that's my humble opinion.

I'm pretty okay.

What exactly about the original gives it more quality than the better games?
SMB64 is still a fun game, but it isn't as good as the newer 2 IMO (although I haven't played SMB64 in a looooooooong time, so that might worsen my opinion).

Brawl. Hands down.

One, is the fact that is was much more balanced than Melee- in that MORE characters can pretty much hold their own where in Melee that wasn't true much at all. How many characters in Melee were used COMPETETIVELY anyways? 6? In Brawl, the number is twice- as I've seen people pretty much use the WHOLE roster where in Melee that was a different story. Melee, looking at it now, was too fast for it's own good. I love Melee and have much more fonder memories than Brawl- but you can't say Melee was 'more balanced' or had more 'quality' than Brawl. That's TOTALLY untrue, especially when Sakurai ADMITTED that Melee was a 'broken mess' and that if there were more time spent in developing the game, it could have been much better.

You can say Melee is better- or even like for all I care. But please don't bring the part of the 'roster', because looking at Kirby now in Brawl, and in Melee, clearly Kirby is much much better in Brawl than in Melee- almost as good as he was in the N64. Being a big fan of Kirby, I was partly disappointed in how he turned out in Melee because he just didn't quite feel right. But that never stopped me from using him. But if I had a choice between Melee Kirby and Brawl Kirby, I'll pick Brawl's version hands down! And Captain Falcon- to me, didn't get nerfed. He's just as good, and maybe better because of how they adjusted the physics within the game, especially considering how balanced it is compared to Melee. Now, is Brawl TOTALLY balanced- HELL NO. But to me, I feel it is based on comparisons and just the feel of the game. Now, quantity- Brawl clearly wins. But I care more about the gameplay and how each character can hold it's own ground competitively.

That's how I feel about this.

Well I can see this debate will go nowhere as you've already decided that we'll refer to as Melee and Brawl as "the better games." I just disagree. I don't see either of those games as "better" than the original...just flabbier, muddier, more needlessly complicated updates of the simplistic fun of the original.

I could go into more detail, but I've already done that in God knows how many threads here already, so we'll just leave it at that. I couldn't honestly tell you whether Melee or Brawl is better than the other, because each of them solves certain problems that the other has, and creates new ones that the other doesn't have. But the original version on the N64 doesn't have any problems as far as I'm concerned.

I probably won't like any further entries in the franchise as much unless they take a step back and concentrate more on making the game fun than on introducing 20 new characters and 45 new items (all of them exciting variations on "club the guy with this thing") ...but we all know that's not going to happen.

Brawl, but I miss Melee for 3 things: Evil Dr. Mario "HAVE'A SOME PILLS!" black outfit, Roy (my old #2 character), and being younger/playing locally with three friends almost NIGHTLY for a time in college spread out over 4 years. Those were the days.

Concerning Quality.....Melee had the better 'Targets Mode' and again The 'Air Dashing' was much better, as you could move in any direction while air dodging and last longer in the air, and the physics is Melee were less floaty and a tad quicker, but that's no real biggy. It's the air dashing in Brawl which totaly dissapointed me. But all of that aside, I totaly prefer Brawl in every single other way.

Also, those asist trophies are soooo cheap! I always take them off, while those Smash Balls are great for 4 players, 1 on 1, not so much.
As far as characters go, FOX is my man! Diddy Kong and Pit are pretty damn great as well. While i find King Dede, Ness, Lucas and King Dede to be the worst.

Does anyone even care that you can't do anything after air dashing in Melee? I don't want to be helpless just because I dodged something! And why does everyone bring up the physics!? I see almost nothing wrong with the physics in Brawl. Sure, matches are a tad slower and it's more floaty, but I don't care at all. Again, I say that everyone is TOO FAMILIAR WITH MELEE! It was out for 7 YEARS before Brawl came along! Of course people aren't going to like how it plays because it's "different"! UGH...I don't understand some of these complaints...

By that rationale, then, shouldn't SSB64 be everybody's favorite?

More likely, Mega Stone, people bring up physics and other things that you listed because they are attempting to answer the question being asked in this thread, and that's obviously an important part of why they feel the way they do. If they say they prefer the physics of Melee, then they prefer the physics of Melee. You can't rationalize them out of that feeling, and it's kind of unfair to suggest that they hold an invalid opinion rooted in nothing more than nostalgia.

You're right. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I can't change that. I guess I'm just tited of people saying that Brawl is bad because of the physics. Brawl is an excellent game, and so is Melee. Even though I still prefer Brawl, there are plenty of things I like about Melee as well. It's still one of my favorite Gamecube titles and I played it so much. Maybe this argument has no winner...

I don't think that at all. I suppose I have been a tad harsh, but it's just that this is a big topic for me and I might have gotten into it too much. Sorry.
