@Joeynator3000 I wouldn't hold my breath for either option...
I've searched a bit more, but I haven't been able to find anything useful, other than similar options like the ones I already pointed out to you, or variations on those, which are also basically more of the same.

One thing a lot of them share is the advice that the soundbar should be up to date, so if you can do a firmware upgrade on it, then do so, and 9 out of 10 times, these boards/forums also mention factory-resetting the soundbar, so that's another thing you could try. And before you do that, disconnect it from the TV, to also remove the connection that the TV has with the soundbar, and remove all mentions of it in your TVs connected appliances mentions. Take the TV off the mains power for at least 10 minutes, reset the soundbar, switch the TV back on, reconnect the bar to the TV, switch it on, and then let the two devices sync or find each other again.

Something as simple as that might be the ticket after all. On a side note: I have come across several mentions of Vizio not exactly being the most widely compatible of soundbars available, so it could also simply be that it doesn't want to play nice with an LG screen. Here's hoping that's not the case, otherwise you'll probably have to be looking into replacing that for another one that IS more compatible...

I dunno, I reset both the bar and TV, nothing, I give up. Back to normal, less stressful experiments. lol

I decided to test TruMotion out with certain games, MHGU of course. It's...not bad, but De-Judder has to be at max, otherwise the game starts looking odd. Like it doesn't look right when running and stuff, and of course having it maxed out means more visual artifacts things. Aside from that, eh, it's fine...not worth using though.

I can say, though...even with Game Mode turned off on the TV, the input lag is still really low. Heh...

Well...I heard that this is common in these TVs, hopefully there's a fix for it or something. Got a stuck pixel (it's not dead, otherwise it would be simply black), pixel refresh did nothing, though. Might try something else later today, it's not THAT bad, but I tend to notice things super easily and it bothers me every now and then when gaming. >.<

EDIT: I may be stuck with it, I guess I'll get used to it since it's not that bad like I said before. I tried the manual pixel refresh thing last night and no luck. This morning I tried that...website thingy that's supposed to try and fix pixel issues, I can't tell if it helped or not but it was a little less distracting when I went back to Youtube.

When I was done for now I turned off the TV and noticed that the pixel remained on screen for a few seconds before vanishing. I didn't hear a "tick" or whatever the sound TVs make when shutting off so maybe it was trying to fix it? I left for a while, came back and unplugged the TV and everything connected to it for a while. If it's still there, ah well...maybe I'll try the website again, it's annoying though since you have to keep the remote active otherwise the screensaver kicks in and ruins it. lol

EDIT2: So I eventually turned the TV off after watching some Youtube, after 30 minutes or so I then unplugged it and all HDMI and left it for a couple of hours. Apparently that fixed it, no more stuck pixel, and it didn't die. -w-

@Joeynator3000 wut?? I just came here to complain because I also have a stuck pixel. Already contacted the dealer but who knows your advice may help me too.

I'm definitely not going to stick with it. It would bother me way too much. So hopefully your tips work for me too, otherwise I'll start the warranty procedure.

Surprisingly enough, LGs pixel refresh option seems to have fixed it! Didn't expect that

I can't even load LG's warranty on the site, and I thought they didn't cover this stuff...

Anyways yeah stuck pixels you should always give it some time first, at least a week they say. Usually the TV will eventually fix itself. Dead pixels on the other hand, I think there's no way to fix those without a repair or whatever.

Update on the LG C9 front: I've had a lot of time to kill these past few days so I decided to spend it on re-adjusting the settings of my TV, audio and gaming systems. Also: with the lockdown situation I will be spending most of my time alone in the house, so I will be killing a lot of time with Netflix, ESPN/Eurosport and my Nintendo. Therefore now is as a good a time as ever to put some effort in optimizing the settings.

These past few months I've had some issues with broken HDMI cables and most likely a malfunctioning STB. So after troubleshooting and replacing (hopefully) all broken links in the chain, everything should be good to go for a while now.

New setup:

  • HDMI 1: STB (Arris VIP5202) - TV settings optimized for sports (vibrant colours, a bit more contrast, sharpness at max, etc.) - just watched my favourit team lose, but I think I've never watched I game in such high quality, albeit with a 1080i source (I guess)
  • HDMI 2 (ARC): Soundbar (Yamaha BAR 400) and Switch (through soundbar HDMI in) - TV settings optimized for Switch gaming; see details below
  • HDMI 3: ChromeCast Ultra - TV settings optimized for sports
  • I play movies and TV shows through the native TV apps (Netflix/Amazon Prime Video) - TV settings optimized for movies. I'm still playing around to get the best possible settings for SDR. I'm not sure how these settings are stored. I know the TV stores everything else per HDMI port, but I guess it stores the 'app settings' seperately.

(In general, I'm still goofing around here and there. All ports ask for seperate Black Level settings, and I don't know what the STB and ChromeCast send out on this setting so I'm not sure how to match it yet.)

Now, regarding the Switch settings...
I fired up Super Mario Odyssey, since this game is known for its vibrant colours and high quality surround sound. Besides that, I haven't really played the game on this TV before so in general it's been a while. I started with the settings most often referred to on the internet as a starting point (see rtings), but I wasn't happy with the result. Heck, I believe that the uncalibrated settings I used before that were better. I play my Nintendo mostly for the fun games with joyful colours, so I don't really need to put in an effort to make Mario look like an actual real life plumber. In the end I decided to go on a trial & error run with a lot of websites open for input and these are the main results. You may notice that there's a few pretty unpopular settings.
Picture mode: Game - and I started from there...
RGB colours: setting in Switch is 'Full range' and Black Level on TV is 'High'. Now mind you - this is the setting I've had to fiddle around with most. I had a really hard time to 'ungrey' the image. Even though the internet was quite convinced you should pick either full range/high or limited range/low, it looked really greywashed on my screen with these settings on. In the end I managed with full/high, because I set Dynamic Contrast to medium (still not sure what this means, but it really makes a difference) and Gamma to 2.4 (which is quite an unpopular setting but works for me). Without those settings, picture remained too grey and washed. Colour Gamut is set to Wide, to regain the vibrant colours. Again, I'm not entirely sure what this technically does, but it provides me with nicer colours. White balance/Colour Temperature is set to Medium -also an unpopular setting I believe-. Most websites advice Warm2, but this gives me the feeling I'm watching a 70's movie while playing Mario which is not ok of course. It could be my particular screen that is relatively bright, which requires a higher Gamma and colder temperature, who knows. Ok, finally the accompanying customised values:

  • OLED light: 100
  • Contrast: 100
  • Brightness: 45
  • Sharpness: 0
  • Colour: 65
  • Tint: 0

Feedback and tips are always welcome!

Soo... About the audio:
The change of cables and STB hardware kinda forced me to re-setup all my devices. This also provided an occasion to connect my Switch directly to the soundbar, providing me with PCM 5.1. Although I'm not an audiophile (far from it; I'm usually at least a quarter off when I tune my guitar and sing alongside it), I hear a lot of difference. Even on my mid-end 5.1 set (Yamaha BAR 400 - 5 channel soundbar, 1 channel wireless sub), the sound is a lot more immersive than it was with PCM stereo.

(@skywake: I believe you are into this)

Besides that, I have good news for all C9 owners who also possess a high end soundbar (or A/V receiver): past summer the C9 received an update with which you can send back PCM 5.1 over eARC from your TV to your sound system. This would get you surround sound if you have your Switch hooked directly to your TV, with sound from your TV to the sound system over eARC. Unfortunately, this still doesn't work for most mid-end/older soundbars, because these only support ARC.

@WoomyNNYes @BlueOcean @Joeynator3000 @ThanosReXXX I hope you don't mind tagging you guys, but since you engaged in the discussion actively last year, I figured you'd may appreciate a heads up.

@toiletduck Thanks for the update and the photo. Looks good! Yeah, I tried Consumer Reports optimized picture settings for my Samsung NU8000, but I preferred my settings, and put them back to where they were.

@WoomyNNYes thanks, good to hear! Any specifics on your settings (for either Switch gaming, SDR/HDR movies or sports) that I might learn from, even though we don't have the same devices?

@toiletduck I don't have any recommendations. I just made sure the image doesn't look over exposed or too dark, and left it. I've adjusted the settings a few times the fist year or two with the Samsung NU8000, and settled into something that's acceptable. I'm not sure there's enough consistency across cable companies, tv shows, movies, games, streaming services for there to be optimal picture settings.

EDIT: I'm in the US where our TV cable companies don't even broadcast true HD. It looks fine, but it's not true HD.

@toiletduck Yeah, thanks for the tag and update. Haven't jumped in yet, though. Current funds aren't sufficient and I've got other priorities to take care of first.

@ThanosReXXX yeah I reckon... I only had to invest in a new HDMI cable. If I wouldn't have owned the TV and soundbar already, I'm not sure whether I would have made the investment in the current situation. I may have acted a little more risk averse.

You're correct. The Switch only outputs PCM surround which is too high bandwidth for ARC or Optical. Which means you either need a soundbar/receiver that has a HDMI pass through (PCM surround is basically a given if it has passthrough given it's the reason you'd bother with passthrough) or an eARC compatible reciever/soundbar and TV.

Also note on the second bit that you need eARC AND for eARC to support 5.1 PCM on both ends which isn't as much of a given as 5.1 PCM on HDMI passthrough given how new eARC is. Basically, PCM over eARC isn't guaranteed if you have eARC, it may be buggy, it may require a firmware update. Also something along the chain may still see PCM and drop you back down to Stereo.

tl;dr: If you want surround out of the Switch (or Wii U for that matter) HDMI passthrough is the way to go. eARC is also an option but eARC is VERY new so may require some troubleshooting and long dives into posts from people who don't know what they're talking about working off of outdated information on dead manufacturer forums

@BlueOcean thanks for the link. I've gone over the thread on PureXbox, nice read. I notice you have Black level at low for SDR gaming. Are you sure that's the correct setting? It should correspond with Switch's setting RGB range to limited in that case (or black level=high/rgb range=full as I have chosen). I reckon black level at low gives you deeper blacks, but it also removes detail (crushed blacks, I'm pretty sure you know what that is given the knowledge you're sharing on the topic ). At first it greyed out for me too with low/full, but I've adjusted contrast and brightness in dark images with other settings. Let me know if you'd like to double check anything with me.

@skywake that's basically what I said right? or are you making a point I'm missing? Thanks for the explanation anyway, always helpful for people who stumble upon this thread later.

Moving post here where I may get some feedback.

Ok. My 4KTV seems to be on its death bed, or at least, it’s reached a point it’s time to replace. There’s this dark splotch that covers the entire middle of the screen on the right side. Not enough to be too noticeable but every time I load the eshop I see it. I keet thinking I’m imagining things, but it’s gotten more and more noticeable any time the screen is all white or a solid color.

So I decided screw it. It’s TIME TO UPGRADE.

And so, with Switch OLED releasing soon, I thought it only appropriate I make the jump to an OLED 4KTV. And what other model to buy than the newest LG model, the successor to the LG CX… the “LG C1”. For some reason I still haven’t figured out, I had $450 on an Amazon gift card, and another $60 in rewards on my Amazon VISA, alongside the fact the purchase earned 5% in rewards back as well. And it was on sale for $100 off. So I barely paid over $1000 for it, all things considered. Not bad for a $1600 TV.

Anything to know about color settings, quirks, recommendations for a 5.1 sound bar that doesn’t cost more than my new TV already cost me 😁 I have Altos 7+ 2.1 which was cheap but better than TV speakers. It doesn’t have eArc, and it would be nice to finally have 5.1 surround.
