Nintendo/Sony have quaility.
Apple has quantity.

I like Apple, but this is too cocky. Game Center looks just like an Apple version of XBOX Live on WIndows Phone 7, so why couldn't they say this directly: "F you, Microsoft."? And that bar graph comparison? It's like me saying I have 50,000 creatures in my backyard, most of them termites, and that's better than my neighbor's yard, which has 4,000 creatures, but most of them are golden retrievers and/or Pokémon. We'll just see who's laughing when the termites eat away that fence of yours and we're forced to pool my pests and your dogs together! HAHAHAHAHA!

I'm back with a shiny new 3DS, yay!

Please guys! that's just the "Quantity" Chart. wait till we see the "Quality" chart.

50,700, huh? Wow, I wonder if Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing, Zelda Spirit Tracks and Harvest Moon are on there.

This. Apple is too confident to say that they have more Titles than the DS and the PSP but are they better than the DS and the PSP?
Apple, stick with what you know (what do they know anyway?), don't go too far.

With Apple, there's something for quite literally everybody. And a hell of a lot more for absolutely nobody.

If Apple ever does something about the physical button issue, that is when the iPhone and iPod Touch could potentially become a real competitor in the gaming market. The fact that they don't have Nintendo games is their only other problem; no matter how much developers try to imitate Nintendo games, it's just never the same.

Back on topic, what gives Apple the right to call them out? Those are the real gaming companies; Apple just takes their own gaming on the sideline to boost their application provision consistency. And to keep people engaged in their products too.

Most of the stuff on the app store for the ipod aren't games. they are either dumb apps your not gonna need. most of the apps on the app store is stupid touch the touch screen or flip and roll your ipod like a madman and it'll make retarted noises. i have an app that if you touch the touch screen, it makes a tazer noise and the full version cost a dollar.

i like the iphone mainly for stuff like phone, stocks internet, and youtube, but gaming? i dont think so. I see stuff on the app store where you tap and here shut up. Really? I only seen 3 that i probably would get on the app store 1. Mini piano 2. the ocarina 3. Yo mama joke app. Apple wasn't made for games.

Mind you, for those of us whose lives aren't ruled by games, the iPhone and iPad are both far superior devices than the PSP and DS - both of which have 1/1000000000th of the functionality.

The iPhone is good for 10 minute games while waiting for the next meeting. What the iPhone is REALLY good for is the non-gaming applications. Which the DS really doesn't have.

There's a fair amount Ninty can/should learn from Apple's system (though it's not perfect by far). There's a reason there's so many apps on there. Apps make money for the devs.

1) Price - Why does an iphone port cost on average around 5x more on DSiWare? Unless buttons are absolutely necessary (and they aren't for many games, look at how well Zelda works with touch screen only controls), screw it.

2) Demos - I can download an app demo for free. Then I can upgrade if I like it or delete it if I don't. The devs in this case still make money off ad revenue. Ads suck but are unintrusive, appearing for a couple seconds before the app itself loads. One of the top grossing games is a free game called "Zombie Farm." There goes Reggie's criticism of free apps not being profitable.

3) Mobility - Ipod/iphone breaks? No problem, all my apps are on itunes, and I can resync to my new device. You can't do this on the DSi now, and who knows if it will be possible when 3DS comes out?

4) Flexible pricing - Let's use AiRace as an example. I believe the new AiRace game will cost 500 points and include the 200 point AiRace tunnel. On the app store a few things could happen with the price.

  • You could offer the full AiRace version as a paid upgrade for 300-400 points. This would save me money and earn QubicGames more beans, because people would be more likely to purchase the extra content.
  • If I hadn't bought Tunnel, it could very likely become a free demo or at least go on sale.
  • On DSiWare, AiRace will be the same price if I have Tunnel or not, and Tunnel will not get any cheaper.

5) Profitability - Prices on the app store are market dominated. Games that don't sell get cheaper. If a DSiWare game doesn't make the sales quota, the devs get nothing. On the app store, they could put the game on sale to make it more competitive.

Now, the app store could do with some of Ninty's quality control and inspection. You have to wade through a lot of crap to find the gems. To make up for that, Apple at least features it's best apps on it's TV commercials. It's just a better value in the end. My $2 doesn't net me a Mario calculator. I can get a real-time currency converter for 99 cents, since the iphone has a calculator on it for free. The hardware's not even more expensive really. You can get an 8GB itouch for just $200 and get better internet surfing, better music functionality, video playback, and a lot more memory for just $30 more than a DSi.

The DS has better controls for some games, better retail games, and Nintendo and some great 3rd party exclusives. With fewer games on the service, it's also easier for the good games to stand out. At some point the iphone will be able to compete with the 3rd party retail games on Nintendo given the lack of download limits and better hardware, while being smaller and having more non gaming functionality. The 3DS is going to really need to provide a lot more in the downloadable sphere to keep it's competitive advantages over Apple in the next few years. That's just a fact.

Continuing the trend of reasoned response, the message in the slideshow is for developers, namely: we have an installed base of proven customers of our application download service.

The fact is that a developer can make an app and sell it at $US0.99 on iTunes and make a massive profit; that's almost certainly not the case in Nintendo's DSi Shop. The advantage Nintendo and Sony have is that their devices are game machines and therefore the audience is more likely to be receptive to a serious gaming product; plus the UI is more game-friendly, however we don't really know how "#1 DSiWare download" compares with "#1 in iTunes App Store" in terms of sales numbers or profit and until we do it's not really possible to dismiss the claims made by Apple. They're kicking ass on other phone providers, why? Because developers only have to develop for one mobile platform and iPhone/iTouch owners have demonstrated that they will buy little apps in large numbers. I could easily see 3rd parties deciding that developing for both DSi and iPhone just isn't worth it because they make enough on the latter -- that is the real threat to Nintendo; not that people will buy one over the other, but that one will be a less compelling development platform than the other.

Of course as long as Nintendo keeps publishing quality software (and if you've searched the DSi Shop you may have noticed that Nintendo has published more titles on it than every other publisher combined twice over) it won't matter to anyone here, will it?

That is all.

This seal is on every box of shovelware that is released on Wii and DS and the reason Apple now jumped into portable shovelware world. iPhone does indeed have some great time wasters, but their real competition is what I'm on now. The Android! iPhone clone, tons of free apps and games, and same service at half the cost.

@walt... spot on my friend.

@sean... you know to me, the Apple and Android games would have me itching to play a better portable Gaming experience. In turn could be making profit for Nintendo and Sony. What I love about my SmartPhone is the Internet. Quick access to email and stocks. Time wasting game here and there but I just don't see a viable competition between them in gaming. Especially when you compare God of War Chains of Olympus or Bowsers Inside Story to the best Apple or androids got.

If you DSi breaks or you want to trade it, you can send it to nintendo and they will actually would do there best to extract it off the system and when you get your new console call them and they would load them on.

Of coarse iPhone has the advantages of Twitter translation (Oh man did that hurt when I heard about it, made me want it more) and a bunch of other useful things, it cost a ton to have, some apps are free but there are airtime data charges.

While I love apple`s tech, they should veer away from games. Not the app games, the GAMES. They need to stick with ipods/macs and let developers make games for their machines.

The difference between Nintendo and Apple, apple has no limits to what they put on their shop and lack of control. I know in japan, Nintendo might have apps that are something like the dating sim games that are only ledgendary, when you live in the U.S.
