Hey, I have a deadset serious question here. In America, in schools, what happens when there's a documentary of, say part of Africa or certain Pacific Islands where traditionally the women are topless?

Is it like, censored with the black bar, banned outright, or is there outrage that a child/ young teenager saw boobs?

Also, do Americans not have beaches and bikinis and things, or is every woman that wears one automatically a whore? Or are children/ teenagers banned from beaches over there to protect them from the view?

If a documentary or educational film contains something inappropriate, schools will usually send home a letter to the parents to sign for permission for their children to watch it. At beaches, there are bikinis everywhere, and it's generally not a problem unless they're wearing thongs, but for a lot of school events or something girls are required to wear one-piece bathing suits if they are going swimming.

I was just querying whether there is a consistency to the kind uproar that is inevitable of a Katy Perry/ Janet Jackson 'event'. It seems there isn't. On the one hand, boobs in an educational video or on a children's show is 'inappropriate', but on the other, bikinis on beaches that children have free access too is quite ok.

Of course it's inappropriate, if the kids are too young to take it maturely. Kids of a certain age aren't going to pay attention to whatever is being taught if a pair of sweater kittens are thrust in their face. On the other hand, at the beach it is expected, therefore not inappropriate.

So all women should chop off their tits cause there on television.

Oops, accidentally posted just the quote.

The other day I saw a video about New Guinea in Geo class and there wasn't any censoring. I'm sure some parents are gonna freak out, but I'm glad. I never liked censoring.

About the violence thing. My class watched Schindler's List in 8th grade and the only thing that was censored was one scene with a nude woman in it. Weird.

I've seen professors censor nude photos in certain classes (not Biology mind you) and I think that they are incredibly ignorant for doing so

I find that culturaly offensive. It suggests that the African culture is doing something inappropriate.

Not only that but I've attended a Classics class where statues of nude people were censored. Yeah, stupid as hell considering all of the students were over 18 anyway

I thought part of the role of being an educator is to teach the kids how to be mature about certain things.

And what? In certain African or Polynesian cultures it's expected that the women don't wear tops. Therefore not inappropriate.

Don't get your knickers in a twist. What is appropriate for one culture is not necessarily appropriate in another culture's eyes. How is that offensive? Some cultures promote polygamy. Just because we don't, and teach our children that it's wrong, is that offensive as well?

Polygamy isn't wrong, it's merely illegal in the US. Perhaps if your teachers taught the difference between "wrong," and "illegal" we'd have less of those self righteous pricks who think the solution to the Middle East is to nuke everything.

Mind you, that one goes for Australian schools just as much. The education system in western cultures needs to do far better in teaching the subjectivity of morals and ethics far better. Of course before it can do that it needs to be tolerant first. Which brings me back to the boobs discussion.

They shouldn't be flashing them around everywhere, that's all.

Only when the mensfolk let them, right? I pretty sure it's not flashing if you don't wear shirts in the first place.

Not only that but I've attended a Classics class where statues of nude people were censored. Yeah, stupid as hell considering all of the students were over 18 anyway

... wow. I'm sure that was an exceptional case, but wow.

I actually fail to see any harm in letting children see nude people

I agree.
But I don't think the sesame street thing has to do with nudity. It has to do with Katy Perry dressing like... well dressing like a whore on sesame street. Corset, mascara, lipstick. It was just a no class move.

And that should have been fixed when they were shooting, not when women complained.

I get that parents don't want Katy Perry's chest on sesame street, but what do they do when they go outside? I've seen much worse on teenage girls and adults out in public.

Objection

The main thing I have a problem is that, especially in the US, it is way more taboo and "inappropiate" to talk about/show nudity or sex, which is a natural part of life, than violence, the ugly unnatural shadow of life. Yes, there is a "too soon," and I realize the irony of talking about violence ona game site, but I don't get why it is more "acceptable."

You know, this is on Sesame Street. What 5 year old would notice, let alone care, about a bit of cleavage showing?

yeah, I agree with that.

the whole thing has been really over sensationalized. I don't think there was really an uproar, but of course the media pounced on it.

Anyway, don't blame Katy Perry, blame the wardrobe department.

You know, that's what I thought, too, but I told one of my friends that, and she said, "oh, they'll notice. Especially the boys"
I really don't know what 5-year-old boys she's been around, but I think she doesn't know what she's talking about.

She doesn't. Testosterone doesn't get produced much in boys until they're preteens
