It's a $30 (a month) subscription where you get a box every month that has about a dozen or so items from Japan (Mostly candy, but it also usually has a couple bags of chips, a soft drink, mini-manga, and "mystery item", usually a gashapon capsule toy).

Anyhow, I remember hearing about this awhile ago and it seemed interesting, but I didn't have a job at the time. Now I do, and it looks like a keeper (knock on wood) and am wondering if any of you have experience with the service, and advice to give? The reviews I've seen have been good, but you can never get too many opinions.

They have three other box types as well (other than their snack centric main item), two of which are also $30/m each and are cosmetics & "kawaii" themed respectively (not interested in these), and a $25/m Instant Noodle box (I am interested in this one as well, but due to the price I'd either choose the snack box OR this one, and not both at the same time).

Forewarning, you are paying 30 bucks for about 8 bucks worth of stuff. If you want to spend that kind of money, I suggest using something like J-List or PlayAsia for Japanese goodies and just getting what you actually want that way.

I actually get something similar to this (for Japanese snacks) and I consider it a pretty good investment, at least for myself. I like the random treats I have found in the last two boxes I have gotten. Still munching on my current box as well. Price might seem a little high but I mainly due it for the randomness. Just depends on the amount of money you can blow.

I used to pay 15 a month for a small subscription box called Tokyo Treat. It was really interesting, when it arrieved. When.

It took a whole month for things to come here, and most of the time they didn't

Of the 6 months I paid, only two ever delivered, and the last one was never even shipped (I cancelled after paying but before they shipped, so they never shipped it, they kept the money of course).

@Heavyarms55, @Dpullam, yeah, I know it's a bit much, but I don't know what I'd like yet, so it'd be a nice way to try different things out. May try the 1 or 3 month subscription to try things out.

@Meowpheel, ouch! At least I know not to try that one out. Luckily, based on what I've read, Japan Crate is about the biggest, most popular of these services, and tend to be reliable (the only issue I've seen in multi-month reviews is that occasionally something is broken in transport, but they tend to make up for it by throwing extra stuff in your next box).

I guess it's worth mentioning that you may have better luck with it in the US.

I mean, I do live in a far off-corner of a "third world" country.

I could do Thai treats for $25 and include more in the box than Japan Crate. I'll call it Try Thai Treats. I could even throw in some Japanese treats while I'm at it seeing as lots of stuff from there is available, even in 7/11's.

I think many of Japan's most popular treats are also made/sold in Thailand.

Hello Panda is my favorite.

Ok wow I definitely owe Tokyo Treat a bit of an apology because I coincidetally got the box I thought they didn't send today. Exactly today, the day I compained about it for the first time.

It is the January box, and I was never notified they had sent it, so who can blame me?

That makes it 3/6 boxes received.

I may buy a one time premium box for my birthday...

@Meowpheel Yeah I definitely cant blame you if it took that long to get the box from January, that's insanely long.

I get the premium boxes and they are totally worth it, I would recommend trying it at least once.

Found out I should be getting about $300 back in taxes, so I think I'm going to go ahead and try out a 3 month subscription (of the premium crate).

It may still be a week or two before I order (there's still well over 20 days to subscribe in time for April's crate), but I'll let you all know how things go.

I actually resubscribed to Tokyo Treats. My birthday is in May, and they don't let you upgrade the subscription before reactivating it, so to get a premium box in May I first had to pay for a regular April box.

Oh well.

I'll cancel it after they send the May box. Promise.

Since I had the money, I decided to go for a one month subscription of both the premium Japan Crate (snacks) and Umai Crate (instant noodles). They should be here around the middle of April, so I'll update around then to say how it's worked out.

It'll never happen, but I hope I get a Sugoi Crate at least once (it's a special crate that they send out to one lucky subscriber each month). Apparently March's had a Pikachu New Nintendo 2DS, Kirby Battle Royale, Gundam model kit, LEGO Japanese Castle set, Luffy (One Piece) figure, and Hello Kitty & Shin Chan plushies, in addition to the standard snacks.

There's a crate-type service for instant noodles?!

This is an amazing world we live in.

Yeah, Japan Crate has four different crates to choose from. One is for snacks, and the others are for instant noodles, beauty products, and "kawaii" items, respectively.

Also, as mentioned before, there's the Sugoi Crate, which a random subscriber is chosen each month to recieve that has collectables in addition to that month's snacks.

Apparently they also have a rewards program (I'm assuming your points build up for every month you subscribe), and you can use your rewards credit to knock down the price of your next month's subscription, or order special boxes (they had Naruto & Hatsune Miku boxes that can only be claimed with said credit). Need to look into it more.

Just an update, back on Tuesday I got a notification that my order shipped (should be here the week of the 16th at the earliest, but probably a bit later).

Sorry for the what's now become a triple post, but my Umai Crate (the instant noodle one) showed up in the mail yesterday (exactly 2 weeks from the ship date)! Hopefully the snack box won't be too far behind.

I had a Yuzu based Udon bowl for lunch today, and it was great!

Well, to continue the thread, Tokyo Treat shipped my premium May box so I cancelled the subscription again for now.

Unfortunately May's theme will be anime, which is kinda underwhelming. I'd rather have something fancier on my birth month. But hey they promise some Splatoon snacks.

I'm still waiting for the April box (easter).

My April Japan Crate (snacks) showed up today! I opened the box and was cascaded with a rush of pink. To celebrate spring (and the annual blossoming of the Cherry Blossoms) everything this month is either Cherry, Peach, or Strawberry flavored.

The only thing I've tried so far was a tiny candy in the shape of a piece of cake that was strawberry/chocolate flavored. The strawberry flavor was very powerful, but it tasted good.

In addition to a few more snack size items, I also have some mid and full size items (I even got a bottle of peach flavored Coca-Cola, which is apparently a Japan exclusive flavor).
