A survey from market research firm the NPD Group has found that 44 per cent of US-based current generation console users are female.
According to the report, titled Gaming Device Profiles, the largest percentage of gamers are two-12 years old (24 per cent), followed by 25-34 year olds (20 per cent) and 35-44 year olds (17 per cent).
NPD’s report also looked into cross ownership of consoles. It found that among US Wii owners (who represent 32 per cent of all gamers), 14 per cent also own a PS3 and 26 per cent own an Xbox 360. Among Xbox 360 owners (20 per cent of all gamers), 42 per cent own a Wii but only 18 per cent own a PS3. Among PS3 owners (ten per cent of all gamers), 42 per cent own a Wii and 34 per cent own an Xbox 360.
Additionally, the group’s study found that 41 per cent of US gamers rely on word of mouth to obtain information on games. 31 per cent of respondents said that they got their information about games from hands on play, while magazine and online ads, as well as social networking sites, were viewed as the least influential resources for game information.
Nearly half of current gen console owners are women....and game sites are the least influential source of info. Thank God for that! No wonder Wii is succesful word of mouth over word of tech (calculon XD)

Oh I hate to waste my time - at least I score points with Clickity and Black Dragoon....

I'm not sure of the reason that this information would be either useful or interesting but i find it neither, someone has wasted their time.
Right, because entertaining you is his only possible goal, and failing that he has wasted his time. What a wonderful world that must be.
I find it interesting. It's an unprecedented figure in console gaming, as far as I know.
Sorry didn't realise i wasn't entitled to my own opinion. And while we are talking about my opinion why should it matter what sex a gamer is, talking about it as a statistic implies their is a divide between female and male gamers, i assumed this hump was crossed some time time ago, apparently not
@ post 13 I never said you didn't have a right to an opinion, just thought it was amusing the way that someone could assume that because he is not personally interested in something that it is a waste of time. Quite a logical leap.
As for if sex "matters," well, it depends on what you mean. For game companies it certainly matters because that significantly opens up the market. Gaming has always been traditionally male-dominated, but now it is practically even. Obviously the trend has been going on for awhile with the Wii, but it's the first time I've seen any actual statistic to back up my assumptions.
