Topic: It's been 6 months since the last Nintendo Direct. Why?

I hate being the guy to make this thread, but back then the distance between each Nintendo Direct was 1 or 2 months in between. That no longer seems to be the case.
We've seen multiple themed Nintendo Directs, including Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, Tomodachi Life and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, but the last true Nintendo Direct was a whopping 6 months ago.
If you don't remember, it was February 13th and it was the Nintendo Direct that announced Steel Diver Sub Wars, NES Remix 2, Rusty's Real Deal Baseball and Little Mac as a Smash Bros. character.
No, their E3 was not a Nintendo Direct. It was their E3 presentation. Nintendo Directs are rather more detailed and their E3 presentation only brought up more questions, like "How does Amiibo exactly work?" "Is Captain Toad Treasure Tracker a retail game or DLC?" "Is Link a girl this time around?" "Was that Star Fox in the background?" You get the point.
What gives? Are Nintendo Directs going the way of the Iwata Asks, or has Nintendo not found an appropriate time to stream another one? You add your opinion in here.

Focusing on single game Directs.
Focusing more on live broadcasts (Treehouse Live and Nintendo Challenge Live are recent examples)
Iwata is not in condition to host Directs at this time.

Overall, you got answers to all your questions. It doesn't matter if there was direct or not for that. So in other words, there was nothing to talk about.

Probably there will be another direct for Bayonetta and SSB in the near future.

Iwata's health is probably a factor but the main reason is E3. Keep in mind that E3 was only two months ago and that was a huge event that showed off a good amount of games.

Captain Toad has already been confirmed as a retail release, at a lower price(not $60). Some of the other questions will probably addressed later. As for the next non-themed ND, maybe October or November focusing on the holiday games such as Smash, Pokemon etc.

There have been Nintendo Directs without Iwata, and mainly featured Reggie, Bill and others.
Alot of the digital event's questions were detailed after the event like the Captain Toad one. I basically used that one for example's sake.

This quote I found from the shareholder meeting might hint on what the future holds for Nintendo Directs
"...We have ideas for new attempts to let as many consumers as possible know about our products through various collaborations with distributors, developing partners and so on. Just as we conveyed information directly and broadly to people in various sectors from E3 the other day, Nintendo will continue to look for new ways to pass on information to more consumers. I believe we can propose various ways of communicating from now on as well."

Having a multi-game direct every one or two months the past couple of years was a bad idea (because it left them with no surprises for their E3 2013 direct, which was considered one of their more lacklustre showings), and they finally realized that this past year, and changed their strategy accordingly.

They still have a direct every two months or so, it's just that they only focus on a single upcoming game, that way they can maximize the game's appeal right before launch, while not showing all their cards for the future (which I personally think is a smarter idea).

That said, I do think they will continue to have one multi-game direct per year (during the winter, opposite of their summertime E3 showing), that will give greater detail on the games releasing the first half of the year.

TL;DR, In short, I think they will only have two multi-game events each year (E3 in summer, and a winter direct opposite of that), with multiple single game directs throughout the year meant to build up hype for imminent releases.

Iwata is in bad health at the moment, so he can't host them.

Sadly, it seems they're concentrating on these single game centric directs for now. This, to me, seems like a huge step back to the dark ages – few years back – when Nintendo was cagey about every game, drip feeding information over months and years. Sure we now know more about SSB, but all the stuff we saw at E3: Mario Maker, Yoshi, Kirby, ZeldaU etc. are still clouded in darkness, with not even a chance to learn more about them.

Upkeeping excitement for these titles is important, for me at least, and the old direct format fulfilled this job perfectly. Moreover all the smaller titles that got the spotlight and attention of thousands of people will be lost in the mass easier.

Currently on the plate:
Mount and Blade: Warband – Napoleonic Wars
Chivalry
Super Mario 3D World – Finishing the last few levels.
Mario Kart 8

Like most are saying I'd assume it is combination Iwata's health and lack of big name releases until the end of the year. Probably one by October I will guess.

I don't think so. Do we really need Directs to accomplish this...or do you WANT Directs for this?

I preferred the old type of directs. Lots of things coming relatively soon.

Until something has an exact date then they cannot be trusted. (Even in the Smash Bros direct the 3DS version was specifically stated to be summer. It would annoy me less if they were pessimistic and then brought the actual date forward).

2015 will be 2016 for at least half of those games I think. (Or so late in 2015 that it might as well be 2016 if it was determined by the closest year).

Maybe I just miss all the excitement and buzz that preceded the show's. The rush that anything could happen that was previously reserved solely for E3. Bayonetta 2! ALBW! Wind Waker HD! At best it was huge announcements dropped left and right, and that's something I'll sorely miss. I don't think the new format's much different than just releasing a trailer. It's cool to see more of a game you're thrilled about, but there's no 'wow-factor' since you know it's coming.

And I stand by my point that indies are getting less exposure this way. Sure Ninty might release a sizzle reel but it's more likely to be missed by many when it's not embedded in the hugely popular direct stream.
