Topic: Is Monster Hunter 4U for me?

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and hoping that this is ok to post here. I know how some forums want certain types of posts in certain areas, so I don't want to start off here by posting in the wrong spot. I have a couple of questions:

First, a small one - is there a "Hello I am new" thread somewhere and I just didn't see it? In retrospect I likely should have searched for it using the search option, but I didn't think of it until just now..

Second, I am a new 3DS XL owner and am looking to get into some MMO type gaming, and although I have read some good things about Monster Hunter 4U, I have also read in several reviews that it may be a game that is not very easy for MH newbies like me to get into. This will be my first "New 3DS XL" title and I want to make sure that I get something that I like, so I thought that I would ask a community of people that likely play it to maybe shed a little light on this for me.
A little more about me and what kind of games I like:

Obviously MMOs but I find that I don't have as much time for them as I used to since I graduated college and (FINALLY) landed a job in my field. I am looking for an MMO type experience where I can play with some friends and pick it up and play for an hour here or there and then turn it off again till the next day. I don't want anything with a super HUGE learning curve, but I understand that being that this will be my first foray into MH that some learning will be expected. I love getting loot, I love killing big monsters, but I also like the feel of progressing. Is MH4U for me?

Thanks everyone for your help! I'll post a "How are you, this is me" post where appropriate to properly introduce myself.

Chat soon!

Abby

Edit: OMG I just found the "I'm new" thread lol - sorry

Hey there. Just happened to see your thread while lurking and just felt compelled to add my two cents:

I've played three titles in the Monster Hunter franchise: MH2 for the PSP and MH3U for the WiiU. That in mind, I have to say that MH4U is probably the most friendly Monster Hunter title for beginners. For the previous two titles I just really couldn't get into the game past the tutorials. MH4U sets up the tone nicely with a quick movement tutorial as soon as you start up and after a couple of introductory quests you get weapon tutorials that help you through the game's combat. The game's not too difficult as of now (about 3-5 hours in) and gives a decent form of challenge which doesn't feel overwhelming.

Regarding multiplayer, I found it relatively smooth to join rooms play with others... of course if they're in the middle of a quest you unfortunately can't join them. With strangers I found online multiplayer enjoyable if slightly uncertain (random people joining and leaving, etc). Playing with friends does indeed enhance the experience and as an anecdotal example, I recently tried playing with my brother (online) and we had a blast hunting a Great Jaggi. Despite my relative inexperience with the franchise it was definitely something I enjoyed and will go back to.

tl;dr: for someone who wasn't much into the franchise's previous titles I found MH4U fun and relatively friendly for newcomers. Playing though so far I had fun both single player and multiplayer. Hence I would recommend this title heartily on that premise.

While Monster Hunter definitely isn't for everyone, it is a fantastic game once you get into it. If you're relatively uncertain about it, there's a demo on the eShop which should help you decide, with a beginner mode which helps out people who haven't played before, and short tutorials for each weapon. It also has online play so you can see if you enjoy the multiplayer side of it as well.

Yes, I like bears.

Couple of things you should know about the series, grinding...lots and lots of grinding. If you're not into that sort of thing, then you may not like this game. Other thing being that this is basically a bunch of bosses in one game. And I mean a lot...like, over 70 I think. lol They're also quite tough, and will take 10+ minutes to take down. (well, besides those "drome" and smaller bosses)

But it also has multiplayer, and it's quite fun beating the crap out of those things with some friends.

Why else would it be called "Monster Hunter 4 U"?

Well the sense of progressing is even more present in this game than in any MMO. Because you actually need skill to beat a monster. When you do manage to kill it, after much time of observing it and failing hard, you can carve them for materials, and when you have enough you can make better armor and weapons, which in this game makes you that much stronger(not by lvling up). So you really feel good when you've finally found out how to beat a certain monster and actually take the kill.

So yes it's quite a hard game, but since you mentioned playing MMO 's it seems time is not an issue here. Which you definitely need to become better, but at the same time is one of the charms of this game.
