Topic: Is Harry Potter The End?

Does anyone think that Hollywood might have a difficult time topping Harry Potter? I'm not really a Potter fan but I love all the things that spawned out of the Potter phenomena in terms of good clean entertainment.

I mean I loved the Narnia movies, I'm a big Rings fan who is eagerly awaiting The Hobbit and I'm looking forward to Pixar's Brave and I'm loving ABC's Once Upon A Time but I just don't see Hollywood topping the Potter phenomena unless they make a Biblical epic that can top Cecil B DeMille's The Ten Commandments in terms of compelling story and exquisite scope.

I hope that Paradise Lost lives up to all the hype that has gone before it and proves to not only be an entertaining movie and cinematic experience but I also hope that it brings alive the not so nearly invisible struggle between light and darkness the way Star Wars, Clash of the Titans, The Dark Crystal and Lord of the Rings have done.

I'm very weary of the mediocre bluffs that the Twilight movies have proven to be. I'm also weary of the fall flat on your face disappointments that we receive in films like Conan The Barbarian and Green Lantern. I'd like to see more thunderous blockbusters like Thor. Thor was a movie that truly moved our entire family to our core as that movie had a very strong moral message about the bonds and power of humility, courage, responsibility and love. I think Thor was what many expect a Superman movie to be. If we could get more good movies like Soul Surfer, Fireproof, Eragon and Pirates of the Caribbean that would be really neat! While critics bashed up on Cowboys and Aliens I found it to be quite exciting.

I mean, the slate does look impressive as Hollywood has Adventures of TinTin, Dark Shadows, Noah, Gods and Kings, David and Goliath, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Lone Ranger, Wrath of the Titans, Paradise Lost and John Carter all in the pipes!

So what will it be? Can Hollywood top Harry Potter?

The Marvel movieverse has the potential.

I'm more into the Indie scene now. (that sounds pretentious)

Would love to see more movies in the vain of Drive,Blade runner, and aliens.

i think that as long as people keep writing scripts, books, comics something will come up that will capture the same sparkle that the harry potter movies had.
i remember loads of people were going nuts over the matrix trilogy when they came out. and same can be said for quintin tarentino`s first few movies, resevoit dogs and pulp fiction mainly.
good and bad films will come and go, you just need to be patient for the films that will opitimise everything that a great should be.
the whole entertainment entertainment industry seems to have a high point every 5 or 10 years anyway. it`s just whether appeals to your taste or not.

@ My Point Is,
you are definitely right about Hollywood having highs and lows every five to ten years. I couldn't agree more. I remember back when I was a child and my parents were talking about how Hollywood wasn't cranking out anything worth watching but it seems just as I reached my teens Hollywood hit gold with Potter and then when I turned 20 things just began to rock for me as they began tossing out awesome movies. I don't think Hollywood is headed for another low. At lest I hope they aren't because right now they are on a sweet roll as everything they are working on is things from my childhood memories like the new TMNT movie and ThunderCats, Jonny Quest, The Jetsons, Wrath of the Titans, Tarzan, Samson and Deliah, David and Goliath, Beauty and the Beast and all that stuff.

I'd agree with of each of these points. The Avengers is on the way and it HAS to be a blockbuster. You can't cram that much awesome into one movie and it still disappoint I hope.

For all of the crap that some people give Netflix, It's been a huge source of "alternative" viewing pleasure for me. For example, I probably would never have watched the unknown to me movies like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. A FANTASTIC flick imo. It might not be considered an "indie" but its definately outside the scope of my mainstream viewing.
With Prometheus on the way, I'll get my Alien fix. The whole Alien series is one of my favorites and I'm glad it's continuing.

I don't really have anything to complain about with regards to movies being released. Things are being done now that I would never have dreamed possible 10 years ago and I continuously find myself entertained. Now if they could just make a sequel to The 13th Warrior...

Man I really Want to watch the girl with the dragon tattoo (either one) but I won't till i finish the book. I started in the summer and got halfway through until I couldn't take reading on my phone screen anymore. Luckily i'm getting a Kindle for christmas.

Netflix has been heaven for Foreign film lovers.

One film I reccomend to everyone is "enter the void". While I've been getting into more serious film I have to say i wouldn't mind the comback of the 80s action movie.

No Harry Potter isn't the end. There are always a few great movies released every year, you just have to look hard enough.
Soul Surfer was amazing, heart warming stories like that get me every time.

I really enjoy movies like Soul Surfer to. I think our family has watched Facing The Giants and Fireproof more often than not. I still enjoy Masterpiece Theater's David Copperfield (which featured Daniel Radcliffe in the lead)

@Magi, I do agree with you guys that The Avengers looks beyond impressive although I'm more excited about Wrath of the Titans now that Entertainment Weekly has delivered teaser images. I enjoyed the original classic Clash of the Titans and I had a bit of a time embracing the new one seeing as this time Perseus had a buzz cut instead of the curly hair but I finally got past that and I'm highly anticipating the trailer hitting the web for Wrath of the Titans. I'm also curious to see what becomes of the Will Smith/ Jaden Smith front lined After Earth. Another thing that just might become as big as Harry Potter is Disney's John Carter of Mars as that looks to be a ride that even Harry can't rival in size and scope.

There'll probably be some prequel/epilogue stuff at some point. And I'll probably watch it whether it's actually any good or not.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

I was really, really hoping I wasn't the only one that saw that.

Also. Someone needs to pay me to make an Inferno movie. Believe me, I would make it awesome.

And the reason I haven't make a "on topic" post yet is that I have nfi idea what this thread is about. If it's asking whether there will ever be better movies than Harry Potter then yes. There already has been. Hundreds, if not thosands of them.

Eragon is by far the most awful movie I've ever seen. Well, no, Last Airbender might have topped it...

And the Harry Potter movies aren't that good either. I LOVE the books, but the movies range from laughably bad (the last one) to good. Never great.

did you seriously call Eragon a 'good' movie? Popyman was right in that it's one of the most awful movies out there, I almost walked out, and I have a high tolerance for crap on the screen, I had friends who actually tried to go back to the movie theater later JUST to throw stuff at the screen.

As for Harry Potter, they were great movies IMO, but it can be duplicated easily

Really, I'd hate to see how you guys would react to a genuinely horrible movie if you really thought Eragon was that bad. Not to say it wasn't a bad movie, but it's just that, bad. Not terrible, not horrible, just bad. I don't even watch that many movies, yet I've seen far worse than that.

the badness is compounded if you've read and loved the book like myself, it was a travesty

Harry Potter films were good a few reasons. They had good novels to base themselves off. They had money. It had a stellar cast of British actors.

They aren't great films, but are good fan services.

Want a great film, watch Black Swan.

GameLord08

Harry Potter's the kind of thing that goes better with films. But even the films went down the drain after the first three. The books aren't that spectacular either, in my opinion. Lord of the Rings is something you read if you're into proper reading. As Avi so vividly said, they're good fan services for, well, the actual fans.

Yes, Harry Potter will be the last good movie ever made. No one in existence now or in the future will ever create another movie worth watching. They might as well shut down Hollywood and every theater in the world cause it's the end!
