It's amusing how defensive people can get about their hobbies.

Gaming is by definition, sitting in front of a TV (or, at least, moving around in front of a TV if you've got Kinect). Why is there an assumption in this thread that that's a bad thing?

Watching TV is also a hobby. And that's sitting in front of a TV.

The difference is that gaming is more active and engaging, yes. That doesn't change how you consume the material though.

Indeed.

I wanted to add that no one needs to feel like I'm being a jerk for posting this thread or like I'm belittling your hobby. Like I said, I love gaming as much as the next guy. Why else would I be trolling around the forums of a gaming site? lol I'm just saying that I think of my hobbies as something different than my past time of playing video games.

I haven't read the/this entire forum/thread, but I think it all depends, in some cases at least, on how deeply you get involved in a hobby: Listening to music, editing music, watching tv, building computers, selling online, videogames, etc. On the GameFaqs forums, this subject/topic came up. My opinion is still the same, as back then. To me, gaming is a pseudo-hybrid of hobby, & pasttime. But, my opinion is just that, my own, & not necessarily others'.

i guess i don't understand the difference between a hobby and a pastime. as someone else said: if it's not work and you do it regularly for fun, then it's probably a hobby. i am a professional artist who does commissioned work, so art is not one of my hobbies. i have a number of hobbies, of which playing video games is one.

you can name things anyway you wish, but it doesn't make them not fit the generally accepted definition most people use.

you're not just sitting in front of the tv though. you are taking an active role in the outcome by dictating the movement of the onscreen avatar. videogames aren't as passive as tv or reading. and motion controlled games can be more active then drawing or painting. and user-generated games such as LBP and Wario DIY can involve the same creativity. being confound with a limited set of choices shouldn't count as if you're only given blue and black paint you can still create despite the limited choice.

User generated content is actually a good factor here. I use to enjoy it once upon a time, but in the end it always made me feel like it wasn't that much better than that castle you made with blocks when you were a kid. You made a neat castle. Yippie,

But nowadays you can actually share what you create and allow other people to enjoy it with all of the online features people have come up with in recent years. Plus you can make some pretty cool stuff. In the end, I would still prefer creating something that I can really call my own, but yeah that's a pretty neat past time/hobby thing.

Hobby- an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation: Her hobbies include stamp-collecting and woodcarving. From Dictionary.com. Yep, that's gaming.

LOL yes I knew what the dictionary.com definition was. But what about the word gay? To this day it either refers to someone's sexual preferences, or a jovial person or delightful event or some such thing. So words can mean different things to different people. Thanks for joining the discussion by the way.

But I'd say the years I have seen hobbies being depicted as something more than sitting in front of a TV, as running or fishing or hiking or writing or making things, and depictions of parents coming to their TV and or game obsessed children and telling them they need to get hobbies, plus the dozens and dozens of people I have seen talking about this subject both in real life and around the Internet and sharing my same opinions, all back up that this question goes beyond what dictionary websites have to say lol

But yes...I love zonking out in front of the TV and playing a good game. I just think of my hobbies as something different, and a bit more fulfilling I guess.

For some, it's a casual hobby. For others, it's an obsession.

I'm kind of in the middle.

The word "gay" does hold multiple meanings. For all intents and purposes, they can be narrowed into two, happiness and homosexuality. No one disputes that "gay" holds multiple meanings although "gay" in reference to homosexuality is a relatively recent development.

The word "hobby" also holds multiple meanings. For all intents and purposes, they can be narrowed into two also, activities or interests pursued for pleasure or relaxation (such as gaming) and a toy horse. Unless you're referring to gaming being a toy horse, the first definition of "hobby" fits gaming perfectly.

Gaming is a hobby. It is commonly accepted and understood as such. By debating it, you only show others how ignorant you are. Stop arguing your flawed point of view. Gaming is a hobby.

What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.

Oh for pete's sake it was a dinky little example! Calm down! I was just irritated that people kept insinuating I was either dumb, or a jerk belittling them and their hobby. I have repeatedly stated that's not what I was doing. My flawed point of view? Well I'm not the only one on this thread, elsewhere on the internet, or in the real world with that point of view. I love gaming, but I think my hobbies are a bit different. Why do you care so much? What on earth is the big deal? I know the above example wasn't great but I can't believe it merited such a long post attempting to point out it's flaws. Just get over it and quite acting like a jerk! I think this thread can probably die now... lol
