the only ones that would say gaming is not a hobby are people who think gaming involves sitting in front of the TV for hours, playing on their wii, xbox or PS3. but that's false.

also things like cosplay where people dress up as video game characters and go to those conventions, that's another example of taking one's love of their favourite game or characters and bringing them to life by looking like link, mario, master chief or whoever.

Isn't sitting in front of the TV for hours what gaming is? I don't know if I'd label cosplay (which I am fine with, and can also be a hobby) or drawing as being a part of gaming.

you're not just sitting in front of the tv though. you are taking an active role in the outcome by dictating the movement of the onscreen avatar. videogames aren't as passive as tv or reading. and motion controlled games can be more active then drawing or painting. and user-generated games such as LBP and Wario DIY can involve the same creativity. being confound with a limited set of choices shouldn't count as if you're only given blue and black paint you can still create despite the limited choice.

Is the Space Pope reptilian?

It's amusing how defensive people can get about their hobbies.

Gaming is by definition, sitting in front of a TV (or, at least, moving around in front of a TV if you've got Kinect). Why is there an assumption in this thread that that's a bad thing?

Watching TV is also a hobby. And that's sitting in front of a TV.

The difference is that gaming is more active and engaging, yes. That doesn't change how you consume the material though.

i think what we are trying to decipher here is the interpretation of a hobby, despite its definition. whether we consider activities that are more passive or more active as hobbies and how we weight those with other activities that we enjoy. this conversation is no longer whether video games are a hobby but whether other activites are MORE of a hobby. although i agree it seems to be a means to justify one over the other, i don't think anyone was being particularly defensive as no one seems to be offended.

sorry, i was wrong there on the first sentence, you're right. gaming is sitting in front of the TV, but not everyone who does this spends hours every day on it.

drawing is not part of gaming, but doing video game fan art such as drawing, graphics, i think can be hobbies.

Oh ok I understand haha Yeah I agree.

Unless if it is affiliated with your job (like the lovely workers here) then yes it is. Even then, it's still probably a hobby.

Is knitting a hobby? No.

Can it be a hobby? Yes.

I think that example says it all for every activity imaginable.

Simply yes.

And an expensive one too. Unless you know how to save money and buy games at the right time.

lol All good answers. Very enlightening.

And like I said in my original post--to me that is what hobbies are.

What the hell else would it be. It's one of the least productive things one can do. I do because I like too not because I have too so yes it's a hobby.

lol It's a perfectly legitimate question. No need to start cussing and acting like it's dumb folks.

I think of hobbies and I think of hobbyists. I think of kids sitting around playing games all summer and their parents coming to them and saying "You need some hobbies kid." I love playing video games. But I just think of hobbies as something different. No big deal.
