Not trying to start a toe-stepping-on thread, but I would be interested to hear people's thoughts on this. I see a lot of people all over the internet listing playing video games as a hobby.
To me, my hobbies are writing, graphics design, web design, digital art, making things... I personally don't consider playing games a hobby any more than I consider watching movies or playing scrabble a hobby. What say you?
EDIT: People new to the thread seem to be getting the wrong impression. I love playing video games. Thus, I have an account on a Nintendo site and post in the forums. I am just saying I personally feel that my hobbies are different than movies or video games.

Yes, it's a hobby. What is your definition of hobby?
Maybe my definition of hobby is a bit old fashioned? I tend to think of hobbies as more than just playing or watching TV I guess. To me hobbies are...doing things. Making things. Being active perhaps. I dunno. I guess the term "hobbyist" comes to mind. I usually associate that with more than playing and such.
i'd put playing video games as one of my past times. however, my love and fandom for certain franchises and games extends to doing fan art, especially gaming fan art. on occasions i draw video game characters. drawing is also one of my hobbies.
so in answer to you question, it can be a hobby but video games can be more than just playing them.
it's in appreciating the characters, the art, the designs, the gameplay and enjoying them because of that.

I like this answer. I would think of gaming as a past time, but it also can be part of my hobbies, such as art.
would anyone here who defines a hobby as a form of creation consider games that are focused around user-generated content a hobby then? i'm not trying to be insulting or arguementative, just curious where the line is drawn as i can see the difference between a past time and a hobby from people's comments even though it seems like semantics.

I consider it something to occupy spare time in between my real hobbies- racing radio controlled cars, running, and playing electric bass. I play video games a couple hours a day and am always caught up with Nintendo's releases, I just don't consider it a hobby because... I dunno... It's like saying watching TV is a hobby. I have skills outside of the virtual world and they're more important and more real to me.
the only ones that would say gaming is not a hobby are people who think gaming involves sitting in front of the TV for hours, playing on their wii, xbox or PS3. but not everyone does that.
also things like cosplay where people dress up as video game characters and go to those conventions, that's another example of taking one's love of their favourite game or characters and bringing them to life by looking like link, mario, master chief or whoever.

Isn't sitting in front of the TV for hours what gaming is? I don't know if I'd label cosplay (which I am fine with, and can also be a hobby) or drawing as being a part of gaming.
I think I might try to terminate my account. I'm not cut out for posting on forums lol

this is not my definition, but i did find this on the website:

sorry, i was wrong there on the first sentence, you're right. gaming is sitting in front of the TV, but not everyone who does this spends hours every day on it.
drawing is not part of gaming, but doing video game fan art such as drawing, graphics, i think can be hobbies.

Nah, handhelds and swinging your Wiimote around furiously is more than just sitting in front of a TV for hours.
