As the topic suggests, this thread is to allow those insomniacs to talk about it.

Tonight, like many a nights, I went to bed at a usual time (usual enough for the holidays) at 1:30. 2, 2:30, 3, 3:30, 4 etc.

Alas, I never got to sleep, however I normally get to sleep after 1 or 2 hours.

What about you??

I really suck at sleeping lately. Seriously went to bed at about midnight yesterday, still wasn't asleep by 4am. And I had to be up at 6. I'm going to start having Nightol fumes pumped into my room, I think.

I used to suffer from chronic insonmia when I was young....

I do have my nights when I go to bed and I can't go to sleep, but normal I do sometimes stay up late on purpose.

I don't think I have insomnia, though I've been asked about it a lot, since I go to bed at 6am and get up at 2pm. I have no problem getting to sleep, I just have an opposite sleeping schedule from most of the world.

I stay awake afternoon (around 3ish) until about 7-8 AM (usually). Used to think it was insomnia, but it's just a different than normal sleeping pattern.

I have the dead oposite, I have narcolepsy. I literally fight sleep all the time. So I take strong prescribed narcotics to keep me awake. It works so well in fact that I now at times have Insomnia and can't sleep then get major narcolepsy issues afterwards. It's Wonderful lol.

I used to struggle to fall asleep every night and struggle to wake up every morning, but then I stopped going to school when I was 11 and just started sleeping whenever I'm tired, which has led to me constantly cycling around the clock with 25-28 hour days. I do have cataplexy and sleep paralysis like with narcolepsy for some reason though. About the only advice I have on falling asleep is to just think you're going to get into bed and relax for 5 minutes and not worry whether you fall asleep or not, because if you feel pressured that you have to fall asleep it only makes it harder. A lot of times I find it easier to fall asleep if I just stay dressed in my regular clothes and rest on the couch instead of getting in my bed.

Yay, back at uni now, so my brain is doing work. Which means I'm actually tired and therefore sleeping at night. For the time being, anyway.

As long as its dark, I'm in a comfy bed and I'm at home, I can easily sleep.

The utterly weird thing is when I go to bed late after getting drunk in town or at a party, I suffer terrible insomnia, then feel all sleepy the next afternoon. If I go to bed later than say, three o' clock in the morning, I usually can't sleep. Alcohol has this unusual effect on me. While other people get loud and fall asleep quickly, I get really calm but fail to sleep a few hours later.

I used to be out cold pretty quick as a kid. These days I constantly struggle getting to sleep. I lay there for 3 hours or more and I'm still awake. When ever I do finally sleep I wake up with sleep paraylysis. If you've never heard of that it's really scary stuff. You are awake but temporarily paralyzed. You can't move at all but you are awake. During this temporary inability to move you sometimes will see things that aren't really there. I woke up once and thought I saw a wolf sitting on my chest and snarling at me. Scared the hebe jebes out of me! I heard that too much caffine before going to bed can cause it.

Dude you really need to see a sleep specialist and get a sleep lab done. I have sleep paraylsis, and mine is directly linked to my Narcolepsy. Yes they are quite horrible and if they last prolonged periods and you dont fall back asleep can start to really hurt. The seeing things that arent there are call Hypnagogic Hallucinations, and they, as Im willing to bet you have found out already, can and will happen when you are awake when you are Really tired. Im willing to bet you also know about this one as well. You have dreams so vivid that you can manipulate them and have full sensory contact with your surroundings, that are so lifelike when you wake up you cant establish reality from dreams?

If you have problems falling asleep, I really recommend avoiding caffeine in general, rather than just trying to have less of it or avoid it right before bed. The half-life of caffeine in your body is supposedly about 6 hours, which means it takes 6 hours to get rid of 1/2 of it, and 12 hours to get rid of 3/4 of it, so even if you just have it in the morning, there's still going to be some in your system.

Yeah, my mom stopped getting coffee from Tim Horton's after 12, or else she wouldn't sleep. And every person will handle it differently. Also, Starbucks' coffee has a sick amount of caffeine.

I tried telling my mom about my sleep paralysis problem once and she freaked out and called my aunt in a panic (she's a nurse) and she had never heard of it. She thought I was using drugs. That was embarassing. That's the Last time I try to explain this to a relative. People who have never experienced this think you're nuts. I read that the hallucinations are scary but basically harmless. The problem is very real though.
