@Retro_on_theGo: I dunno, I kinda like the 'goofball'!
@FOREST_RANGER:Um, I guess I've got the basics. The guy likes to keep to himself a bit more, but he's perfectly open with his friend (unless it's about something like the above sequence). I don't have the girl quite figured out yet, but I think it has begun to present itself with this scene (lovely how that works, huh? ). I'd like her to end up 'frustrated', rather than angry. She'll probably leave, but she'll be back later.
And, spoilers! you'll never actually see this girl that he has a crush on. She's just a plot device.

Untitled
Sketches! Finally!
Here's the girl (I'm calling her Lucy for now). I'm very happy with how this turned out! I don't have the boy yet, but this came out so good that I couldn't wait to show you all!
Coming next will be (of course) the boy, and a teaser scene (sketch) from later in the story...
If you think you have a better name than Lucy, let me know!
I can't wait to hear what you all think!

That's looking really good! You see, I would help, but when I make graphic novels (which are actually just 2-4 page comics) they're usually about a talking walrus or something. And there's always a sandwich involved.
And I'd like to see where this is going because I'm actually in a situation like that right now

Thanks all! Glad everyone's enjoying this!
I'll have some new sketches later today! Oh, and @Musterd: Maybe you could provide some insight into that, to add some extra realism to the situation? I would really appreciate it!

And, last but not least, here's a couple of teasers for y'all!

Do you believe in zombies?

What if something were more alive than life?

A few things:

1. The art style looks great, but stop drawing on lined paper. Even if you just use crummy copy paper, once you ink and scan it, you're really going to wish you hadn't drawn it on lined paper.

2. Jeff Smith is a great place to look if you're trying to grasp spatio-topicality in comics, but keep in mind that he's an expert at using his space. Even some "professional" (think Marvel, DC, &c.) comics don't use the page space well, but Smith knows how to do it, and it's not easy. Using the page space correctly is important, and it helps to think of the complete page and the pages surrounding it before you begin plotting and drawing.

3. Pacing in comics is very different than that in prose, and it's not always easy to figure out. Again, it helps to think ahead in comics and consider what comes next. Going panel to panel is all about considering how you get from point A to point B. Consider this: All of the action in your comic happens in the gutters, not within the panels themselves.

4. Write the comic that you want to write. Let other people help you out and suggest things, but always take outside input with a grain of salt. If someone can identify that you did something "wrong" in your comic, 9 times out of 10 they won't be able to tell you how to fix it. It's your work, so please make it yours.

Well, she knows I like her, but she always just plays it off. It all really started once in gym when she and her friend were arguing that her friend couldn't pick her up, so then she asked me if I could. So I did, and I don't really know the name for the way I held her but it was how Mario carries Peach in the end credits of NSMB2. And I ran across the gym and back with her. After that everyone would tease us about it, and she would get mad, so I don't really know what to think. But she DOES know that we were both the only ones in our classes that knew what tardigrades are, so there's that. And now it's telling me tardigrades is misspelled. See? Not even the spell check knows about them! IT'S SPECIAL.
Also, when you say zombies, are you sure you don't mean... ZOMMIES?

@Ron_DelVillano: I really appreciate it, thanks! Although, just so everyone knows, I have no intention of drawing my comic on lined paper. I'm just doing my very early sketches in one of the hundreds of spiral notebooks I have lying around. I need to get a new sketchbook (and I'll probably get it today). Also, however unfortunately, I don't have a scanner (and probably won't be getting one soon). I'll just have to make do with my digital camera (although it often does an exemplary job with taking pictures of my drawings).

@Musterd: I don't mean Zommies (lol), but this is definitely not your average story about zombies...

Well, once again you guys might not get any sketches... >.<

But, I would like to give you another bit of script. This takes place a little while after the first scene (as in a few days later). I've hit a bit of a bump, though, as I'm not sure what to have happen in between the two scenes. I know the script for the first one is still incomplete, but I think I've given a good enough outline of where I wanted it to go. So that's what I'd like help with next (and I'm still trying to come up with a name for the boy). So without further ado, here it is:

  • [Lucy] enters [the boy]'s room once again. This time, however, the light is dimmer and he has a large amount of scientific apparatus all over his desk. Blueprints and equations cover his walls.
  • [Lucy]: Notices the mess Uhhh..... hi. What're up to this time? And... sorry I haven't been over lately.
  • [Boy]: It's okay. But thanks for coming over today. I've got something important to tell you about.
  • [Lucy]:suddenly indignant Is it about that girl again?
  • [Boy]: Nah. This is much more important.
  • [Lucy]: relaxes again Well, I see you've been up to something... indicates his desk
  • [Boy]: Yeah. That's what I wanted to tell you about.
  • [Lucy]: So what is all this?
  • [Boy]: I'll get straight to the point: do you believe in zombies?
  • [Lucy]: smirks Um, no! Of course not! Don't be silly! Zombies are just make believe.
  • [Boy]: Well, I guess that reaction is to be expected. And I guess I have some explaining to do...
  • [Lucy]: Yeah, I think so. And I hope this isn't just a joke...
  • [Boy]: No, this is serious. And, well, what I'm studying aren't really what you'd think of as 'zombies'. But that's the best term I could come up with.
  • [Lucy]: So what are you studying? For getting straight to the point, you're sure not getting to it...
  • [Boy]: shifting his gaze ...I kinda get the feeling you'd rather not be here...
  • [Lucy]: I...uh...it's just... oh nevermind. apparently brightens up, picks up a device from his desk What's this?
  • [Boy] Whoa, don't touch anything, though! [Lucy] quickly puts it back Uh, I'll try and get to the point again. I've found, uh, 'creatures' that live on another, uh, 'plane of existance'. But, they're not even really alive. They're more than alive.
  • [Lucy]: skeptical again More than alive? I... that doesn't make any sense!
  • [Boy]: It is kind of weird...
  • [Lucy]: I'd say a lot weird.
  • [Boy]: ...but I have an explanation. I've been studying the very nature of life. And I've found something interesting: there are varying degrees of being alive.
  • [Lucy]: still skeptical, but more interested now And how does that work?
  • [Boy]: becoming more passionate I've assigned life a number. Inanimate objects are zero, and living things are one. It's easy to imagine things that are less than alive. Take a virus for example. It doesn't exhibit all of the laws of life. I've found that it gets a value of 0.85. Intelligence, actually, makes the value go above one. Things like dolphins reach 1.00067. Humans are the highest with 1.1001.

...And I'll add more in a little while! Can't wait to hear what you think!

In case you were wondering, no, I haven't abandoned this project! It was just that this little thing called Animal Crossing: New Leaf had been occupying an inordinate amount of my time...

But anyway, I do have new sketches, and I finally got my new sketchbook. So work on the actual graphic novel will commence today! I don't really have a timescale on when you'll actually get to see anything, but it is coming! I can't wait to hear what you all think once I get some new work up!
