Topic: IGN Changes Scoring System--Irritating Arguments Cease Forever

Adam and I seem to have the same habits when it comes to reviews and finding games that interest us - I usually just stick to one site (this site, though I do check IGN and Kotaku every once in a while to check out the up and coming games for other consoles) and just pay attention to what gets announced and/or reviewed to see what might interest me, watch some videos if its obscure, etc. Most ofthen, though, I just as around. The score is never a factor, and I rarely regret any of my purchases (and those that I have were either universally praised or too obscure for Metacritics to have gotten enough reviews anyways). Of course, I generally trust my own instincts and tastes as a gamer enough so that I am more than willing to purchase a game without needing an abundant amount of information.

Stuff, I can understand that with your habits, scores would indeed be necessary, but all I'm trying to say is that there are plenty of other ways out there that are just as successful, if not more, and most don't rely on score as a factor.

Keeping up with reviews is very easy. Much easier than sorting through a million old reviews by score. No "theory" to it. I do it all the time: Open Google Reader. Is there a review? If no, do nothing. If yes, am I at all interested? If no, mark as read. If yes, read now or star for later. Few seconds of your time, no score involved.

And if you bought a console after release, chances are you either A) were interested enough to begin with and have kept an eye on it, or B) weren't interested in it until a particular game and therefore don't care about the backlog in the first place.

Not like there aren't other ways to find interesting games: Google top ten lists, ask on a forum, browse a used game section, etc.

Remember Herman Farbage, while taking out his garbage, he turned around and he did see Tomatoes hiding in his tree ... now he's just a memory!

Oh, um. Review scores? Yeah.

There will likely always be review scores, regardless of the evolution of gaming journalism. I think the only entertainment medium that isn't regularly quantified numerically in some fashion by reviews are books.

I personally like sites like Metacritic which summarize the reviews into a score and provides links for each review for more details

Nice! Excellent find, since it can go for well over $100 on eBay and such.

Whiskey tango foxtrot...you serious?

Also waltz is right the gaming media on the whole are bunch of kids right up to the main editors and in that they lack much professionalism or writing skill to truly on a steady pace level a good argument to sell or scare someone off a game with true value of content which likely is why those scores are required because it's a good way to sift through the trash hopefully via places (like metacritic) that garner averages so you can at least get a feel. I too went from freelance game review/news/previews writer to working on them for a couple years or so with AMN(now Kombo) doing all that but initially editorials on the handheld (GBA and DS) level of stuff. I never liked using scores, but when I did I limited it as they used 100pts too and I did the 1/2 point system to at least give a fairer gauge of suck or success with a title. Ultimately I wrote pretty long reviews, especially for RPGs due to the content so you'd get a real feel without a ruined plot.

Holy crap. I saw your links there both you (it's the same one) and I see a bunch of stuff NOT being bid on so I logged on (hate them for being that way) to get into advanced search and checked completed. Check this, and it's Lukie Games, a to me semi-disreputable long term 'company' on there that won't show you the condition of the game and uses general descriptions that are very vague. On July 29th, someone paid US $158.50 for a loose copy with no image or description of the condition at all. Other completed don't exist, but the fail cap seems to be $150 on it and I figure that one that did go got into a whiny deep pocketed peeing contest between 2 idiots who couldn't let it go.

Shoot it's almost depressing that I like the game as I could make some serious bank on it. I think it could be my most valuable price wise game in my collection. Last time I made such a killer deal was like 15 years ago getting Wing Commander Kilrathi Saga at Price Club(not Costco) for $20 they were clearing out, later sold it for $120-130 on ebay. Did the same with Chrono Trigger more or less too when it was on a nutty high as I cleared $100 profit on it too.

When I bought my copy for $3 at GameStop, the cheapest they had on Amazon was around $40. Now it's $164. You can certainly understand why I'd freak out at the chance to get it so cheap. Apparently, GameStop had no clue what they had.

Oh, and I know the links were the same...I just didn't feel like removing mine just because it was posted all of two seconds after his.

Very nice, we both scored big time. I put a little more on the game last night finding that section dungeon in the desert. The only thing I'm not digging is the stupid stuff where it seems like mandatory hits due to funky design like those Nagas that are 5 or(night)10 hits as they'll keep rolling into you. Sure you can buy boosters but they aren't permanent like a brass knuckle would be.
