If a tree falls next to a deaf guy, and he is startled, would him gesturing "WTF WAZZAT?" in sign language make a sound?

Yes it would, try moving your fingers around randomly next to your ear and you'll hear that just moving your fingers will create sounds.

Oh no, you didn't seriously...

What's a better way to completely kill someone's attempt at being funny than treating him seriously?

That is incredibly sad. You sound like you have a low self esteem...

You're saying it's better to turn a topic that I'm pretty sure started out with a serious intent into a joke?

As I noted above in #22, the issue this question points to is not going to be solved simply by defining sound as either vibrations or the perception of those vibrations. The point is that there is a unbridgeable difference between the two, the thing and the way it is sensed.

Again, you can rephrase the question: "If a tree burns in a forest and no one is around, does it create a smell?" Now the problem is clearer, because you might try to avoid the issue by defining a smell as the particles that we detect with our olfactory sense, but if some other creature sensed those particles in another way--by somehow seeing them, for instance--we wouldn't call that a smell at all.

I'm not saying anything. And whether or not I think its better to turn the topic into a joke is irrelevant. What you should have done was to just ignore my post...

I'm thinking you're a tad overly sensitive... All I did was reply to your post in a manner you perhaps didn't expect.

What if the Not a Chicken egg was in the tree when it fell, but the Not a Chicken still survived, just very deformed. What would our chickens be like now?

Oh please, don't flatter yourself. I answered your question didn't I? Where are you going with this anyway?

@Alexsays:That may be the case but I agree, we should end this. This has blown way out of proportion.
