Topic: Remember when this site used to be great about reviewing all the eshop games?

Now it seems like the only review a few of the biggest eshop releases.

Is it even possible to review all of them unless they want to maybe just make a one-paragraph-summary? (And I don't think there's resource to buy ALL of the eshop games either...)

True, and also all WiiWare and VC games.

It's way too hard to review every title. What is there now, like 15 to 20 games being released a week? I'm sure it's alot harder than it seems or they would review them all. I'd give them some slack.

Plus they started doing nindie highlights to bring some light on indie games they aren't reviewing due to too many being released per week.

Yes, but back in the day only a few games were released at a time, nowadays there are loads each week.

There are no ACA Neo Geo nor Arcade Archives reviews anymore. It started to be reduced to only a few of them months ago and now week after week we don't see any.

I'm a firm believer that the cream rises to the top. If there's an eShop game that is worthy of your time and money, then there's a high chance NL have done an article on it at some point (News, Review, Roundup etc.). There will inevitably be a few titles that fall through the gaps, especially as others have said with the volume of releases on the eShop... but, when I look back at the Indie games that I have enjoyed the most... as it happens, they're all featured on NL and they do have a review.

@nocdaes Agreed. Far too many to look at all of them. @JayJ Perhaps look elsewhere for these reviews as many have been covered on initial release on other sites. Understand the frustration of not knowing what's worth picking up.

riChchestM

Perhaps if they stopped wasting time reviewing old rereleases and ports of well established games from other platforms.

Shmups seem to get a disproportionate number of reviews. I guess they're pretty quick to knock out compared some others.

There's just too many now. Reviews, or at least well done reviews, take a lot of work. When Nintendo has a goal of 30 a week, there's just no way to handle that. 2 reviews a week is really pushing it for the average reviewer, and a team of reviewers really would be pushing limits at 6 a week.

They cannae' change the laws of physics!

@riChchestM And instead reviewed niche indies that are often also old releases and ports from other platforms, or of limited overall interest?

@JayJ There is no way one site can keep up with the hundreds of Switch releases. Usually only notable games are reviewed so sites can release a steady chain of reviews. However, NL has done well to review more obscure games. If you are trying to get a review for specific titles, I would just do a quick Google search.

The sheer volume of them makes it pretty hard.
That being said, I'd rather the format of Nindie Highlights for all reviews. Quick blurb about how it plays, if it's fun, how it performs. I don't need an in depth review for ports of games, as example. Then the big reviews reserved for the big Switch exclusives (Xenoblade, BotW, Octopath, etc..)

This is how I feel about this, and I also like the suggestion here. With the insane amount of games hitting the eShop each week (Which isn't a bad thing), there's only so much the staff can cover without experiencing burnout.

They take guest reviews, correct? Maybe some users would be interested in submitting their own well-written views on a game or two?

@PolarExperience Back in the day the only website that reviewed all WiiWare and DS games was Nintendo Life, Google taught me that.

@Tyranexx @NEStalgia I don't really trust reviews anymore to be honest unless I know the writer a little bit. Demos are the best way to try games. Obviously, reviews are a very important part of a gaming site, it's just that I don't rely on them. [sarcasm on]But NintendoLife's rankings are great [sarcasm off] so you get that these days.

@BlueOcean: I definitely don't just rely on reviews in most cases unless it's part of a franchise that I have confidence in to not drop the proverbial ball.

As for the site's rankings, are you referring to the actual review pieces, or the aggregated user scores here? I don't agree with some of the review scores, but there are others that I feel are spot on; this is up to preference and an individual's likes/dislikes more than anything. As for the aggregated scores here, I feel that the vast majority of them are pretty accurate.

I agree with you on demos...as long as they're put together well. If I had went off of the first Yo-Kai Watch's demo alone, it's very likely that I would never have picked up the game.

@Tyranexx Yep, some demos are not good at selling you the games. I was referring to the "Every Mario game ranked" and such rankings made with so little knowledge. I haven't checked aggregated scores here but some (not all) reviews are not that good regardless of the numerical score.

Banjo-

Tyranexx

@BlueOcean: Now THAT I can agree with. XD I feel like some of those lists (though I don't count them as reviews) could use some revising. Again though, that's up to everyone's own preference. It's why I tend to both like and dislike such lists: they're easy to see, but there may be such and such reason why each individual thinks a game should be higher or lower.

@Tyranexx It's not just that but if you read those it is obvious that they had not played most of the games. They are embarrassing. They were made quickly just to attract comments. I mean, compare those to any article written by Thomas Whitehead or some of the best reviewers like Morgan Sleeper.

Banjo-

Tyranexx

@BlueOcean: They could definitely be better put together at times. XD To each their own, I guess.
