Game developers don't value players' time. I don't want to waste my time repeating the same stuff over and over just to beat a level or accomplish an objective. Every game needs to have a super easy mode where it lets you get through without making you repeat the same thing over when you die. Certain things where you learn skills or knowledge is worth the time. But games are not worth repeating things over just to get a little further. Games should give everyone the option to skip an objective or give you the reward anyway for trying. There's nothing worse than trying over and over to get something done in a game only to fail in the end anyway because it's too hard and ended up wasting hours of a player's time.
Go play some Mega Man 10 on easy mode and you'll feel better.
lol
Well I hate easy games
For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
What you described sounds to me like a "tedious" game instead of a "hard" one. Hard games offer challenges that are just plain difficult to complete, and require some skill to master. Tedious games are just repetitive.
Obviously, I like hard games.
I'm working on a game that's coming out soon! Cipher Trailer

^ Agreed. I like difficulty but I don't like the repetitive nature of some games where you keep dieing. Games like Splinter Cell I use to like dieing because I could use completely different tactics the next time. Other games like World of Goo I didn't mind dieing because it keeps your brain engaged and also it's not the same everytime you play. Some games though every play through is exactly the same except you need to be a little more careful not to die.
Every time I read a thread like this (well, the OP at least) my gamer heart dies a little bit. There are more than enough easy games out there - go play one and leave my challenging games alone!
If you don't like hard games.. you're not a true gamer.. gamer's thrive under difficult circumstances, even if it means sacrifising tons of hours until you beat the crap out of that game!
If you find a game is a waste of time when you die, then you're playing the wrong game. A good game is fun if you win or lose, and winning should not always be an assumed outcome. They wouldn't be games, otherwise.
when i beat a hard level, it's a personal mark of achievement for me. I don't want my hand held, I don't want a 'super-easy mode', i don't want to be shown how to get past something. Just give me something to accomplish and let me figure out how to do it my way. i don't care how hard it is.
this kind of expectation that you should be able to win something just because you paid for it is kinda BS, IMO. It takes hard work and a measure of skill to get through some games -- put in the effort, and you will eventually be rewarded. If you think you've got it bad now, try gaming in the NES era -- there were so many NES games I never beat just because I got bored and set them aside, but that doesn't mean I didn't still have fun playing them.
as for when you get to that point where you think you just can't do it, set it aside, do something else for a while, and then come back to it. there's a good chance you'll actually get through whatever it was you were trying to get through, and then be all 'oh wow that was easy, on to the next level'.

I like challenging games but I don't like it if a game is hard because it's unfair. I can get frustrated but as tbd said it's extremely satisfying when you finally get through a really hard part of a game. Although I like some challenging games, there are some games that I find too frustrating like the ghosts n' goblins series. @Klapaucius I agree, the gamecube action replay was great and it's annoying that nintendo didn't allow a wii action replay. It's also annoying that they stopped the wii freeloader from working.
All games should be enjoyable by all players regardless of their skill level. I think Nintendo has hit the nail on the head brilliantly with their Super Guide thing, because there's always two seemingly conflicting statements about gaming floating around - 'old games were more accessible' and 'old games were waaaay harder.' I like games to offer a selection of difficulties, but that's not really an option for some genres, and I've no complaints for games that dynamically shift difficulty depending on how the player is doing - provided of course they avoid MKWii-level rubberband AI and don't feel the need to rub it in the player's face that "YOU SUCK SO WE MADE IT EASIER FOR YOU." And provided it can be turned off if the player chooses. I don't like games where the difficulty increases to match the player's skill - I don't mean the natural difficulty curve of the game, I mean that MarioKart thing where as soon as you're in first place everyone behind you suddenly become ultra racing gods - because ultimately a human cannot beat the reactions of a computer and the better you are at it, the more blatent it becomes that the computer is a cheating coughcough.
Of course, some games are hard and meant to be hard, it's their design principle. Games like N, Super Meat Boy and Bit.Trip just wouldn't have the same appeal if they were easy. But there, a fast restart is king to keeping it enjoyable for all. Doesn't matter how often you keep dying, doesn't take very long at all to get thrown back into the action. In Meat Boy's case, dying lots makes the end-of-level replay all the better.

I agree with those saying that difficulty is okay as long as it feels fair and doesn't get repetative. Slogging through the same parts of a level over and over in an attempt to get past one hard spot is no fun at all in the majority of cases.
The crown jewel of difficult gaming is, IMO, Demon's Souls. It gets a lot of flak for being really hard, but it's MUCH more fair than your average game. Yes, I've died a number of times in that game, but it almost never feels cheap, as if it wasn't my fault. It's fair, where you can actually learn from your mistakes and progress without worrying about the game throwing some random BS at you.
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P
I think there's a difference between a game being 'hard' and being 'challenging'.
A hard game trades gameplay for needless, maddening unfairness(Mega Man, the spring stages on SMG1 & 2), a challenging one is unforgiving but it's always your own fault if you die(Monster Hunter, the rest of SMG 1 & 2).
