Anybody here have some insights in Japanese grammar or know some places which tell how it's structured. I'm not looking for in-depth descriptions just something like "more or less the same as English in structure", "totally different but not that difficult" or "different and difficult to grasp"

Take a look at this site, it's a good introduction to Japanese grammar:

I'd say "totally different but not that difficult" would be your answer. There are no gendered nouns or similar annoyances (though their counting system was created by the devil himself).

@Irken: Haha, nice pic. However, I don't think those are true Japanese words, just variations of words already in America (I don't know if you know this or not, sooo... )
For instance, the bottom left one should be pronounced: Ah-Pu-Lu Pa-ee. Say that fast, and it sounds just like "apple pie," which is what it is! The same can be said for pretty much all of the words on that picture. It's simple, so long as you know the Japanese dialect.

I wasn't suggesting he do it (and you should get some courses under your belt first anyway), just correcting Waltzelf on his ways of getting a proper grasp on a language. There's only one real way to do it, and that is regularly conversing with people who are actually fluent.

Considering I have learned Japanese (or more accurately, are building on a conversational-level Japanese ability), you should probably think again before correcting me on anything.

Of course once you have the basics, building on them requires a native speaker to talk to. But you can't throw yourself in the deep end of a pool without at least a basic idea on how to paddle.

Again, I'm not saying you shouldn't take courses, just that if you truly wish to "get a proper grasp on the language", as you put it, you need to move beyond them and use the language in real situations.

You're both right in a way. I took Japanese in high school and there was only one student I was able to talk to in Japanese. The students were so lazy, there were students who took Japanese for THREE years and pretty much didn't know anything beyond Hello and How are you?

I think a person can learn from a book, but they should also have someone to correct any mistakes they may make.

I'm using this thing to pull ahead of my Japanese class. Just search "Japanese" at the top, and click Japanese Core 2000: Step 1. It'll teach you the most basic 200 words of the Japanese language to start.

To begin, create an account (it's totally free). Then, you can start the lesson. Find the link on the page that is called "iKnow". From there, it'll teach you in a way where you'll feel as though you are actually learning stuff! Let me know what you think, and if you want, you can "follow" my profile! :3 (Username: GameWiz)

EDIT: Oh wait...If you know absolutely NOTHING about the language, then I suggest searching "Master Hiragana" and "Master Katakana" in order to get to grips with the Japanese writing system... Just ask me if you have any questions about the language, and I'll do my best to try and help!

Ok I got the website to work . Now to start on japanese . '' Here we go ! '' (from new super mario bros wii )

EDIT : Okay I am getting pretty good with fruits and veggies . I will make some flash cards later .

@Werble: It definitely gives you the tools to learn the language, but you get what you put into it. Namely, it sets a schedule for you, and if you follow it well, you will learn several words a day with ease.
The whole technique works really well. It will quiz you on several different terms in a variety of ways. If you get one wrong, it assumes that your brain is a bit fuzzy on the word, and it remembers that. Then it'll throw the same word at you more often than other words, in order to make sure you're learning.

The only flaw I can find with the system is the lack of a Japanese grammar lesson. So, you might have to look somewhere else in order to learn how to construct sentences...
