I had an idea to check what the stats for Wii sports were on the Nintendo channel, for america at least(I'm not sure if they are world numbers or not). Dividing the hours per player into total hours and same with play times, it comes out to over 4.3 million, even if just North American numbers, over 31 million users aren't connected online or don't have the Nintendo channel, if that is how it's set up to record the stats. I need to ask a favor, could some other people check in different locations to see if the numbers add up everywhere? I'm curious to see if it's different from place to place, I hope that isn't a worldwide stat.

Yeah, it's a worldwide stat. It is only around 10-15% of Wiis are connected online.

Wow that's pretty sad. They don't know what they're missing out on... There's more to the Wii than Wii Sports casual peoples!

Not a whole lot...for the approximately 80 million units sold, only a fraction of them bother going online. Waltz' figure of 10-15% sounds pretty close. The Wii wasn't exactly built to have an online focus and the majority of owners couldn't care less about it.

Has anyone tested whether its worldwide or not? I would think it isn't considering there are different games in each region as well as different Nintendo Channel content. I think it would be odd for all regions to cross over in that one instance. I certainly hope its not a worldwide figure because that would be quite sad....

There is a problem with this approach. Not every one has necessarily downloaded the Nintendo Channel and for those who have downloaded it may have opted-out of the transmission of data to Nintendo. We are also assuming that every one who has a Wii has played Wii Sports (Safe assumption). All we can say is that there are 4.3 million people who have played Wii Sports and have not only downloaded but also chose to share their data with the Nintendo channel.

This number is handy however to find out other percentages. Since this channel was available in all markets by May 2008 we can calculate what percentage of that sampling had played certain games launched prior that month. We cannot do this for games afterward because if a person had only ran and submitted info once and never ran the channel again then those numbers are skewed. (Example. If someone cut their internet when they lost their jobs during the recession to save money may have reported their time playing Wii Sports but may not have been able to post any numbers for Super Mario Galaxy 2)

While these numbers are fun to play with only Nintendo knows the true number based on how many people access the Nintendo Channel Servers and how many active users are reporting to them. That channel is definitely an excellent marketing tool for them Advertising and Statistical monitoring disguised as bonus content for users.

But hay, it was all worth it to find out my mother had spent over 800 hours on Animal Crossing a year ago when she still had internet.
