Topic: How Big a Sports Fan Are You?

Well, I've been pretty excited with the success of the Kansas City Royals in the playoffs (baseball), and it got me to thinking about how big of a sports fan I am, and I figured we could all do the same.

Baseball - Probably the sport I'm the biggest fan of. Though I've been watching the playoffs pretty intently (especially the Royals), during the regular season I like having the game on as background noise. I usually try to go to 1-2 Royals games a year, and 3-4 games of a local small league team. I played little league for a few years as a kid, myself. When it comes to video games, I used to play my dad alot on the original Playstation, though I still occasionally like to fire up one of the newer games for a few rounds of home run contest.

Football - I'm a Chiefs (pro) & Mizzou (college) fan, though like with baseball, I like to have the games on as background noise more than anything. I do love watching the Super Bowl though, more than any other sports match (regardless of who's in it). It's rare that I actually go to a game, but I have been to a couple Chiefs games, and I went to quite a few of my school's games back in high school. I haven't played it myself (other than some touch football in gym class), but when it comes to video games I occasionally fire up an older Madden release and get a few games in.

Basketball - Maybe it's because we don't have a big league team near our area, but I've never been a fan (even though my dad is a big Lakers fan for some reason). I played a lot of Horse & 2 on 2 in elementary & middle school, and video game wise I played against my dad on the PS1, but other than that I have no interest.

Soccer - I don't get much of a chance to see it because my dad absolutely hates it (going as far to say it's disrespectful/degrading to "real" sports to discuss it in the sports section of a news program...), but on the occasion I do get to see it (watched a few games during the Olympics) it seems like something I could enjoy casually.

Hockey - Like Basketball, I've just never been a fan (though my dad watches it occasionally during the playoffs). Unlike Basketball, I haven't even played any variations of it when I was younger...

Tennis - I've never watched or played a tennis match in my life, but for whatever reason, I love arcade style tennis games (played a lot of Mario Tennis back on the N64, and currently lot of Family Tennis 3D on 3DS).

I haven't seen enough of other sports to really form an opinion on them. Overall I'd say I'm a fan, but a casual one. How about you?

Did you not get the chance to watch your country do quite well at the World Cup? Olympic football is not up to much, its not really taken seriously. Got to laugh at yer Dad saying its disrespectful to sport to feature footy on the sports news.Your Dad does realise that globally he is in the complete minority?Football is the worlds game so to not feature it is disrespectful.American football might seem like the biggest thing on the planet to some Americans but to the rest of the planet it means very little to the majority.

I'm a huge fan of certain sports when my teams do well, which means the I'm stuck rooting for the Wild right now (which isn't a bad thing, as hockey is awesome!). I love the Twins and Vikings, but they haven't been able to do anything this past year. As stated above, I'm not that crazy about basketball. I like the T-Wolves, but I don't really get that excited about them or any b-ball team. Soccer is lame.

No, I didn't get to catch any of the World Cup (the only matches that I could have watched were a few games early on between teams I'd have no interest in).

Interestingly enough, McDonald's was holding some sort of World Cup promotion at the time, and my brother actually managed to win something (though I'm not sure what, since it just said "Soccer Item Winner!"), but decided not to claim the prize... (I mean if you don't like something that's fine, but a freebie is a freebie, and even if you don't like soccer, I'm sure he'd know someone that'd appreciate it).

About 2 on scale 1-10. I keep up with hockey playoff standings, that's about it.

Oh, went to Grey Cup one year too. That was a lot of fun. Not really for the football, though I enjoyed that too. It was just a great experience to be in the crowd, and it's a good memory I have of my dad.

Saying that I like sports would be a massive understatement.
Before everything else, there was sports for me.

Football, Basketball, Baseball, Golf, Tennis, NASCAR, Soccer, Hockey. I love 'em. The 49ers were first in my life, though I'm a former die-hard (don't ask.) And you can bet that if a sports game is near, I'll be one of the first to get to it.
I've also made some comical sports videos, while having sports related things in other videos.

Anyways, favorite teams and players...
KC Chiefs/Alex Smith
LA Lakers/Kobe Bryant
SF Giants/Tim Lincecum
LA Galaxy
NJ Devils
Cal Bears
Jeff Gordon
Tiger Woods
Clint Dempsey

On a scale of 1-10, I'd say about a zero. I hate sports and sports events, and I hate how much of a priority things like football and baseball are in this country. Every time someone wants to make conversation they either ask what sport I'm into, or just automatically assume I'm into sports and ask what team I'm for and when I tell them I'm not into sports they go "Oh" and the conversation awkwardly ends. I hate it.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

I do love me some sports. Particularly baseball, but that's really a history thing. If you want to know almost every World Series outcome over the last 100+ years, I'm your guy. I talk (and think) about it constantly, perhaps a liiiitle too much.

I'm okay with basketball and football, but I haven't liked basketball as much as I did in the 90s, and my knowledge is kind of linked to my NBA 2K13 team.

Not interesting in watching sports at all.

Used to play Rugby Union/Soccer as a child.

Quite like Tennis or Badminton or Squash but I don't go out of my way to play it regularly if someone wants to play it I normally will though.

Played Croquet for the first time a few months ago.

I think about Back to the Future quite a bit (And by association the World Series and Cubbies)

Back when Teddy Roosevelt was still president and we were just getting used to those newfangled contraptions called "automobiles" and "aeroplanes".

I like hockey (go Canes!) and soccer (true football) but I don't have much time to watch them on tv. I do go to hockey games though.

I'd say around a 7 or 8. I do love me some football and baseball, with a little basketball and hockey thrown in there. I can't stand soccer though, and I know it will probably make some people mad, but I think it's actually kind of wimpy.

As far as teams go:
Football: Redskins/ Patriots
Baseball: Red Sox
Basketball: Wizards/ Celtics
Hockey: Bruins

On a scale of 1-10, I'd say I'm about a 6. I used to play a lot of sports when I was a kid. I don't go out of my way to watch games, and I don't catch every single game.

As far as team preferences go....
Baseball - Blue Jays/Red Sox/Cardinals (my favourite sport by far)
Hockey - Bruins
American Football - Patriots
Canadian Football - Tiger Cats
Soccer/Proper Football - Chelsea (I don't watch MLS)

Despite playing it when I was a kid, I've never been interested in watching basketball. That could change someday though.

I like watching the NFL. I started watching a lot of games when I got into college (wasn't a huge fan before then). My favorite NFL team is the Panthers. In regards to the NBA... eh. Don't watch the NBA during the regular season. To be honest, I didn't start watching the playoffs a lot until last season. The Hornets are North Carolina's team so I guess they would be my favorite team. I'm not as big of a fan as I am of the Panthers though, mostly because the Hornets have been mostly a joke for the past decade (thankfully it looks like their turning things around). I also like watching college football and basketball. March Madness is one of my favorite times of the year. I'm a Tar Heel fan, but I also pull for the ACC in general (except for Duke basketball).

Baseball and soccer are too boring. I'd much rather watch the grass grow. I also watch the Olympics whenever they're on.

Oh, I realized I forgot to mention non-team sports (other than tennis) in the original post...

Golf - My goodness it's boring to watch, but like tennis, I'm fond of it in video games (I played quite a bit of Tiger Woods & Wii Sports, & Wii Sports Resort). Never played it in real life, other than mini golf (if that counts).

Boxing - Never really watched any professional boxing (mostly because most of it seems to be locked behind PPV), but I enjoy catching it during the Olympics. Video game wise, it's rendition in Wii Sports was pretty fun.

MMA - I'm exposed to it quite often, because my dad watches a lot of it, but I CAN'T stand it. The structure isn't rigid enough for my tastes (I know mixing various fighting styles is kind of the point, but it all comes off as one big incoherent brawl with no finesse to me). Also, it just doesn't seem like it has matured yet as a sport (the athletes & organizations themselves don't seem to portray themselves in a professional manner, at all. Which just exasperates the way it seems like a schoolyard brawl to me).

Billiards - Not really sure if this one counts, but I'll list it anyways. I've never tried watching it, but I've played it extensively in both video game & real life form.

Bowling - Same as above.

Just for the heck of it, I managed to catch the end of a MLS match between the Portland Timbers & Real Salt Lake, just to try it out.

I found it decent enough to watch (and I could probably get more into it if I caught a Sporting KC game), but at the same time I could understand why it's been tough finding a market in the U.S. It ended in a 0 - 0 tie, and yeah, I can understand the mentality of being turned off by the prospect of sitting there for three hours with no definitive result (while it is certainly possible to tie in sports more popular in America, it's much harder, hidden behind various levels of "overtime", due to the cultural demand to have a winner & loser).

That said, It seems like it'd be fun to play (both IRL, and in video games).
