@BlueOcean The discussion between AlternateButtons and Doggo pretty much sums it up where I live. People claiming to be open minded and crap getting extremely defensive for no reason when someone of an opposing viewpoint comes along respectfully.

Granted, it is a vocal minority and most (non socially inept) people tend to keep their controversial opinions to themselves, but look at the news, social media, or college campuses and you'll see this stuff all the time. I know perfectly good people on both sides of the spectrum, but some people get really crazy.

A respectful bigot is still a bigot. The both sides argument is bunk when one side is quite obviously the moustache twirling villian.

But hey, maybe we should just let people murder us as long as they're polite about it.

That's funny, someone who would shoot me on site just for being alive asking for respectful discourse over bigoted ideas, yea, no thanks.

I was talking about Modern Family and I want to know how Americans see Europeans and vice versa (read the OP again). Please stop talking about politics.

This is the worst way a topic tagged friends could have gone. Sorry @BlueOcean, I guess you have a taste of how some more politically extreme Americans act.
Back on topic, Europe honestly seems like a much better place than America, excluding the terrorism and Article 13 stuff. Standard of Living is also better in some EU countries, so there’s that, as well.

@LilDoggo48 Well thanks for listing sources!

First story: You're quick to jump on America for detaining illegal migrants yet you forget that it was the parents who tried to illegally invade our country. If theres anybody to blame for the child poor conditions, it's the parents. Nobody forced them to break our laws.

Second story: Californias Wild fires are caused by their own terrible forestation policies. Funny how no other state has as many wild fires as them. Almost makes you think that climate change has little to do with it.

The third article is a biased opinion piece that gives no solid evidence for it's claims. Kind if like what you keep trying to do.

No ones invading anything! These are innocent people, innocent children!! You have basically proven everything I've said with this comment.

Anywho as you can see you are probably much better off and much safer where you are.😓

The interesting problem with the questions that you pose is that each individual will have different answers and viewpoints based on their impressions and life experiences. I'm sure it's a similar case for users from other countries. There are many stereotypes presented in the media and the internet for all sorts of nationalities, groups, fandoms, etc., etc. Some of these have a grain of truth to them. Others are way off the mark or completely false. It really depends on what's being discussed. I just dislike the automatic reflex that a lot of people have to "You disagree with something, so you automatically hate it. End of discussion." There's often (but admittedly not always) way more to it than that.

The state I live in, Illinois, is primarily known for one of the largest cities in the country (Chicago) and little else (Well, besides our state's political situation, but I won't get into that here.) Trust me, there's a lot more to it in terms of people, natural areas, and culture. For example, have you ever had a Horseshoe sandwich? It's a weird and fairly unhealthy concoction, but it is a tasty one to have on occasion!

The area I live in is mostly rural and conservative. While I can say that there's a small grain of truth to some of the "gun-toting redneck" stereotypes here in a few cases, for the most part people are responsible gun owners here. People here really care about and try to invest in their communities. Community, family, mutual respect, and treating others as you would treat yourself (The Golden Rule) are all generally valued here.

I do dislike how a lot of Americans currently have an "us vs. them" mentality where politics are involved (from both sides of the spectrum), but I'm not sure how much of this is true polarization and how much of this is enflamed by the news and social media. We do have our issues to be sure, but from what I've witnessed, other countries including those in Europe deal with many similar problems. I just wish that more people could try to truly work out solutions to said problems, or at least try to compromise honorably.

Pretty much. For what it's worth, usually this isn't something that comes up in day to day life, except on the internet/news. But it's a very accurate showing of extremists. Just ignore them.

On topic for how we view Europeans, the bluntest answer I can give is that we really don't care. This sounds a bit harsh, but it really isn't. We respect you guys and all, but most of us don't have this idea or speculation of how Europeans act or think.

We're usually just focused on living our own lives and just really aren't that interested in the day to day lives of people we've never met unless there's a serious problem going on like a natural disaster or something. You're people, just like us. We usually just leave it at that.

If it were a place like China or Japan or something, there'd be some interesting and far out ways that we view people. It's a much more different and exotic place, and we've heard all sorts of stories and rumors about the people there. But for Europe, not really.

I don't think wanting people/children to be able to live and be healthy/happy/etc and not be persecuted for their skin pigmentation, sexuality, gender identity, etc is really "extreme" but hey to each their own.

@LilDoggo48 Look, I don’t care about political parties, it’s a dumb thing to get tangled into. However, when someone will go so far to prove that they are morally and politically correct, that’s where I draw the line between extreme and passionate. Not an attack against you or your political party, it’s just an opinion.

That's not the point though. It is literally people trying to point out/begging people to understand "this is bad and we our hurting ourselves/others" and no one listening.

We have normalized so many blatently awful/destructive things it's just scary. It's not just about parties. And I'm not saying I'm morally superior. Just that obviously bad things are bad.

I guess "Europe" is repeated there by mistake?

@GyroZeppeli Yes, I can see it now. However I still believe that there are civilised people here that can share their thoughts with each other peacefully. When I have a conversation with you guys most of the times you are from another country and it's perfectly fine. Actually, I like it. It's like when AntiMatter talks about his culture and ours, or most of my NL friends being American...

@ReaderRagfihs Yeah well, I didn't expect that some people would take it so seriously or in a negative way. I genuinely think this is an opportunity to share thoughts, jokes and even learn or make new friends knowing each other a bit better.

So what do you Americans think of Modern Family anyway?

@LilDoggo48 I realize the current state of America isn’t great. However, some of the stuff you said, whether intentionally or not, paints conservatives to be evil. This is sort of the reason why I’d rather throw away my vote to something like the Green Party instead of pick a continuously bickering side. I’m not saying nothing should be done about this country. I’m just saying that both main parties arguing isn’t going to make the nation better.
@BlueOcean That was a mistake. I meant to say that Europe seems like a better place than America. But in some ways, Europe is better than Europe.

Modern Family is pretty good, definitely miles ahead of other abc programming.

I mean when the heads of the Conservative party act blatantly and obviously evil on levels that would make even a comic book super villian face palm and you see so many on that side in the constituency supporting it, yea kind of hard not to view certain groups as evil.

And yea the Dems aren't perfect most of the older ones are spineless cowards that don't stand up to the bigots on the Reps side or in their own party, but at least the younger ones are trying to change that.

And throwing away a vote is never a good thing cause that's how we got tRump.

Anywho all I'm trying to say is America needs to wise-up and catch-up with other progressive countries so we can start taking better care of people and our planet before it's too late!

Also yes, Modern Family is a decent sitcom as far as sitcoms go.

This comment is so interesting, thanks! I think that the problem is that politics are too radicalised or polarised as you said in US, it's not like that in Europe. Also here you use the term conservative as a vague term and not always in a negative way, like my grandmother is conservative, I still love her even if I don't agree with her. As you said, part of the problem could be the news, social media, etc. Yes of course we have a lot of problems here too. I love the way you think, everyone should share that attitude, really. The world would be so much better. We are all people, after all.

From what I've heard I think that you are right about the Golden Rule and social values in US (that I commented earlier) and that's definitely a good thing that doesn't quite exist here. I also said that I think that Europeans are more individualistic while Americans seem to be more sociable and helpful (in general LOL).

Dang, when I started composing that (long) post on mobile, this thread was only one page. O.o It seems to have taken off, but...not for the better in some cases.

Folks, this is a gaming site and forum. Political views are very rarely one-dimensional and have as many angles as there are people, but I'm pretty sure getting into them violates one or more of the rules here. Let's keep it civil and lighthearted, shall we?

Ahem....

I admittedly don't think about Europe too much outside of "Hey, how would they do this in [insert country]?" moments on occasion. I know that some countries, for example, find the idea that many of our retail workers do the bagging for us strange. This is pretty normal, but there are some chains (such as Aldi, which I believe is German in origin) where we do bag our own stuff.

I know the wide open spaces we have compared to some areas of Europe have surprised some exchange students that we've had.

There are some countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world that I'd like to visit. Near the top of that list is Japan for obvious reasons. Germany is pretty high too; this is mainly from a cultural/heritage standpoint, plus I want to test how well I can still read German in one of its native settings.

@Mrtoad: Heh, thanks! I've often had the same thought on more than one occasion when it comes to the forums. Your quote also showed that I had some editing to do; I'm well aware that Europe itself isn't an all-inclusive country. XD

@ReaderRagfihs Yeah, we watch a lot of American films and series. I know the reality is not exactly like that but the scripts are written by Americans and since they say funny things (that are exaggerated) about Europeans I guess that what they say about Americans is partly true. I would try to remember more jokes that are meant to tell the differences between us. There are differences in Europe too. For instance, Norway, Denmark and Sweden are known for being among the most advanced countries in the world regarding quality of life, safety, social rights, etc.

I can give you one example I have seen on those house renovation TV shows. I am not saying that this is true [edit: usual] and I am picking innocent examples (too bad because we could have much more fun if people were not this sensitive). The neighbours complain about your garden and you and your g/bf acknowledge it and your priority is to fix your garden so your neighbours like it... That would never happen in here. Here it would be considered rude to complain about the neighbour's garden to begin with.

I don’t know about anyone else, but in my neighborhood, we have a Yard of the Month Competition. The thing is, the winners are always the ones that share the least space with other houses. They are guaranteed to win if they just pay a little for the gardening service. Even with that, the residents decide to judge every yard in the neighborhood.
