Because the Vita is bad unless you like indie and Japanese games

The same could be said about the 3DS.

If you can't get both, I'd say wait to see what exclusive content n3ds gets. Vita has long since been abandoned by even Sony themselves, so not much will change in its library. I have one, and after finishing a few games on it and... not-finishing a few more, quite some of them available elsewhere, often in better versions, I barely touched it.
The best thing about it? Cross-buy with quite some ps store content, like indies and ps1 classics. Psp had a strong homebrew community, I honestly don't know how the Vita does from that perspective.
I will get the n3ds, and already have a Vita, but not unlike with psp, I'm not convinced by the Vita. Just waiting for the Grim Fandango remake now.

I recommend getting a Vita. I doubt Nintendo would put any major titles the N3DS because of install base. With the Vita you'll get a new system and a wider variety of games, something new. Plus, if you don't have PS3/4, you'll get access to a huge libary of indie games. If you get one, games to definitally look into are Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush.

And here comes one of Sony's dedicated reps here to troll Nintendo Life once again T_T. Seriously, this guy only comes out of the woodwork to praise Sony.

The only real answer? See what exclusives you like best and go with that. Are you dying to get MHU4? Then the new 3DS would be perfect with that second circle pad. Want more indies and Sony exclusives like Uncharted? Go with Vita.

And some people on here are right: handhelds are very much catered to Japanese developed games and indie devs looking for a quick buck. If you're looking for a legitimate open-world RPG (besides the Xenoblade Chronicles port) or a QUALITY western dev release...you might be waiting a LOOOOOONG time. Even Uncharted: Golden Abyss has that sorta B-list Obsidian vs. Bioware vibe. I remember when people were like: CoD on Vita=Supeiror!!!!1...but they don't talk about that anymore...it's like the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Dude, I'm not a Sony rep, and I'm not trolling. I was gonna come here and recommend the 3DS over the Vita until I saw he had a 3DS already.

Wait, you have a 3DS already? And most games you like for VITA are already avilable on a different platform? Gotta give you that, I'm very confused about your interest in either N3DS or VITA as options, but okay, that's your thing.

My recommendation is the same as ever: get the platform that has more exclusive titles you want. In case of the N3DS, Xenoblade 3D would be the only exclusive title to begin with, so unless you're really annoyed by loading times on your 3DS, it's not really worth it. But with VITA, you'll have to wade through a lot of half-baked ports and japanese games that really show off why japan loved them, for better or for worse.

My answer?

Wait on both right now.

The New 3DS is impressive on paper, but right now there's not much outside of Xenoblade, more ram, and extra buttons that justify the price tag of it. Majora's Mask 3D, Monster Hunter 4, those are all coming to the current 3DS models. You won't be missing out on much by sticking with your current 3DS model.

Think of it this way. The DSi did not have much on it that could not be played on a DS Lite. There were no major retail games that were exclusives, and the only thing DS Lite owners missed out on were DSi features in games and DSiware.

The New 3DS could be the same thing. A newer model with brand new bells and whistles, but with few games that are exclusive to the hardware. I would wait on it. If the New 3DS becomes a second Game Boy Color and gets games that can't be played on older hardware, then the upgrade it worth it. But if its another DSi that does not get any major exclusives outside of Xenobalde and the newer games can still be played on the current XL, then the extra features may not be worth it.

Now, moving on to the Vita. That system is not worth the money right now. Major third-party developers have given up on it for the most part, Sony themselves don't get a damn about it either. The system is almost three years old, and we have yet to see a God of War, Grand Trusimo, or much else is terms of Sony first-party support outside of ports of PS3 games. You're basically spending 200 bucks on a indie, port, and niche game system with some PS1 classics and PSP games that can be downloaded thrown in.

I own a Vita, and quite frankly the system is a joke. Sony refuses to do anything to address the Vita's problems, they won't give it even give it any kind of real support. To give you an idea of how poor support on the Vita is, Kilzone: Mercenary was the last major first party exclusive for the Vita and that came out in August 2013. Its been over a year since then, and no other major titles from Sony have come out. Compare that to how many 3DS games Nintendo has put out in that same time period, and its pathetic.

I don't see much value in either handheld right now. The New 3DS is too much on a wildcard in terms of how many games will really support its added features or be exclusive, while the Vita is a dying system that will likely be put out of its misery in a couple of years anyway, which means you can pick one up on the cheap at that time.

So far, the New 3DS only has Xenoblade. At this point, you're betting on which will get more games.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

I'd probably go for the Vita. I'll be trading in my 3DS XL for a new one, purely so I can play Xenoblade. But I'm kinda skeptical as to how many exclusives they'll release. I'm imagining probably less than 10 over its lifetime. It's just too hard to justify avoiding the existing install base and Nintendo have never been too obsessive about graphics. I think this is largely being released because they know some people just like owning the latest hardware.

I think when you define a polite response to the specific question that someone else asked as "trolling", you need to rethink your definitions.

If you already have a 3DS XL, then just get the Vita. There will not be enough exclusive content on the N3DS to justify a $200 purchase.

Save your money and when the N3DS comes out (it might be long while) only then consider it (and get the normal version for the faceplates).

Buy a Vita, sell your 3DS XL a.s.a.p.(before N3DS release comes too close), play the Vita games you want then when N3DS releases sell your Vita too and buy a New 3DS XL with the combined money.

Persona 4 Golden should be enough justification for buying a Vita.
