Just because you corrected someone's grammar, I wouldn't use the word nazi so abundantly.

So ends a saga older than time itself.
The World's oldest and fiercest army has been led to victory, and a lost generation
is delivered from its fear of extinction. As the sun sets over the
field of conflict the dinosaurs disperse, hoping never to set foot

I admit, I HATE IT when people sound like they came from Icanhazcheeseburger.com. Maybe if your upset for what you did, you should say your sorry if it reallly DID offend him.

I fail to see how being a grammar nazi is any more courteous to your fellow man, but what do I know.

I've learned to accept some people don't care. That's life, and no amount of arguement, however eloquent, will ever change that. I'll save my breath for other things, thank you very much. :3

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

Well, likewise. I don't typically correct grammar or spelling on this forum either.

That doesn't mean that I'm going to give and credibility to any opinion voiced by someone who can't be bothered even getting their grammar right, though. If you can't spell or use basic grammar rules properly, it's difficult to imagine you're capable of any kind of complex thoughts.*

I must say, though, this forum is better than most when it comes to English usage - most everyone here is fine.

  • note: This doesn't apply to non-native speakers. I'm talking about the people who have even worse grammar and spelling than a non-native speaker.

I love the irony in this thread's title.

UGH! It's "could HAVE", Not "could of"
No, I don't feel like a grammar nazi, because I don't usually correct people, unless it's something really blatant that people keep misusing, like "could of", "definately", "your stupid", or "there stupid"
....those are my biggest pet peeves.
Everyone makes mistakes, so I usually overlook things, but the excuse that "this is just a forum" or "I don't worry about grammar on the internet" doesn't fly with me if it's something we should have learned in the 2nd grade. I don't care if you're not worried about grammar; stuff that simple shouldn't be something you have to sit down and proofread for an hour.
Okay, maybe I am a bit of a grammar nazi...

Well, that's not what we were talking about. Understanding and credibility are two different concepts. If you don't want to give a second thought to people like that, that's okay by me. I tend to think you can find interesting thoughts from any sort of person, good with language or not. What do I know though, right? :3

There are very few professional careers that tolerate poor English skills and articulation. So, you should be actively practicing grammar (the most basic of articulation skills) so that it will be a reflex skill, before you finish school.

As long as you can understand what the person is saying then no need to correct them. (you may correct them if it's seriously irritating but not that aggressively.)
but i agree with a particular post here. that the person maybe too lazy too polish it's writing skills. that's just rude especially in a friendly forum like NL .

the_shpydar

I think it's also different between writing and speech. Though i may be quick to correct someone's grammar in a written form, doing it in a conversation would be rude (unless it's just f'n with friends or some such), but fun if you're looking to intentionally pish off someone. =)

I guess, "fascist grammar police" would work?

Some posters in this thread should direct their attention to this article on Muphry's Law.

Also, grammar is inherent in the use of language. Grammar is the rules you follow when you construct your message - even if you don't know you're using them. You cannot speak or write in an established language (like English) without "using" grammar. We can say that your grammar is incorrect, but you've still "used" some form of grammar even if it's wrong. Everyone who can speak and/or write a language is a regular grammar user.

The only way you could avoid grammar is to write in a totally unstructured way. very understand be then people But you able wouldn't well to.

I thought this thread was implicit in equating 'using grammar' with 'using good grammar,' personally.
