Topic: greatest system of all time for JRPGs

I as a huge jrpg fan in the SNES days. I took a 12 year hiatus and am now back into gaming and on a mission to play as many missed JRPGs as I can. Is SNES considered the best? I know PSX had a fair amount (I stopped gamin in the middle of the ps1/n64 generation) and am guessing ps2 and ps3 were good, as well?

I'm almost positive n64 and gcn had next to none. And I think the wii was pretty barren barring the 3 operation rainfall games at the end?

This is where my knowledge stops, so I guess it's between snes, psx, ps2, ps3, gba, ds, 3ds & the xbox systems which I know nothing about as I've never owned any.

Would someone mind listing ther favorite couple systems for jrpg's as well as their favorite few and why?

Thanks a lot.

I'll start my list tomorrow, it's getting pretty late for me.

PS2

  • Final Fantasy X
  • Kingdom Hearts
  • Kingdom Hearts II

GBA

  • Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
  • Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls
  • Final Fantasy IV Advance
  • Sword of Mana
  • Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
  • Fire Emblem: the Sacred Stones

DS

  • Kingdom Hearts: 365/2 Days
  • Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded
  • Suikoden Tierkries
  • Nostalgia
  • Lufia: Curse of the Sinestrals
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
  • Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon

3DS

  • Tales of the Abyss (also on PS2)
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star
  • Crimson Shroud (eShop)
  • the Denpa Men: they Came by Wave (eShop)

By no means are these the only JRPGs on these systems, just what I've played. While I enjoyed both KH:CoM & PM:SS are divisive, so I wouldn't recommend them over the others.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

The average opinion is that SNES and PS1 are the best, and in terms of games being both good and relevant, I'm not sure I could argue with that.

But I didn't own either of them so I can't tell you how accurate that really is and I think most of my experience with JRPGs has been on handhelds (especially since tons of those SNES JRPGs were on GBA and even DS). Handhelds have been the place for JRPGs for like a decade now, to the point that I consider the success of Xenoblade and Ni No Kuni to be extremely bizarre.

The wii had quite a few more than that. A great deal of them released by xseed and askys

SNES and PSX are the go-to ones, although like kkslider said you can find the best of those two as ports on the GBA/DS and PSP respectively. PS3/4 is likely to be pretty great, and the Wii's Virtual Console can fill you in on the games from the Sega systems.

My recommendation is to get a DS or DS Lite, since they can also play GBA games. You'll be able to access a huge amount of retro styled and modern JRPG's that way. PSP, PSVita and PS3 are also good, if the games for those systems interest you more.

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

The 32-bit grey top loader of pure gaming greatness, The PlayStation One. (And it's the best in a good amount of other genres too.)

The PS2 is probably a runner up with the SNES. PlayStation 3... 'eh, not so much. There are a handful, but not near as much as its two predecessors. Other good systems are the NES (if you don't mind very old school design), GBA, DS, and PSP. Most systems have at least a handful playing, barring the original Xbox, N64, and a couple others.

Honestly, I'd say the PS2. I can think of more good-to-great RPGs on that system than any other. Most of the SNES RPGs have been well outdone in my opinion, and honestly I feel that most PSOne RPGs have aged almost as poorly as their platformers. The PS2's RPGs just felt so much more refined. Yes, not all of them were great, but it's rare for any game to attain true greatness, and I'd still hold that few consoles have the sheer quanity of goodness, and possibly even greatness, than any other console as far as RPGs are concerned. In fact, I can only think of maybe 9 or 10 RPGs for the console that I'm not entirely fond of, and I own 59 PS2 RPGs.

No contest for me. Super Nintendo has the best games catalogue for all genres and tastes, it represents the golden age of gaming. Predictable, you may say, since we're on a Nintendo forum.
One day I'm going to have my own SNES.

I have to say the PS2. It already has an absolutely massive number of JRPGs (as Canis pointed out), it's backwards compatible with the PS1, and the PS1 itself has ports of a number of SNES games. I guess you could also buy a backwards compatible PS3, but I think I read that they have emulation issues.

I'd think the Vita would be one of the best systems overall to play JRPGs right now, just because it can play a ton of old PSP and PS1 JRPGs. The DS is a close contender for its exclusives and some of its remakes (I'm a bit hesitant to mention the 3DS because I find playing DS games on it a vastly inferior experience, but it doesn't bother some people).

I'd mention the SNES too, but most of its JRPGs have superior remakes on newer systems (FF4 on the PSP, Chrono Trigger/Dragon Quest on the DS, etc). I've never owned a PS2 so I'm not really sure how its library stacks up.
