Topic: Getting back into some of the DS catalog, the touch screen games really haven't aged well

Did people hate the train system in Spirit Tracks that much? Because that difference is the only one compared to Phantom Hourglass that isn't just objectively better. Otherwise, Spirit Tracks was Phantom Hourglass but without the major problems of Phantom Hourglass.

I really liked exploring the sea and stuff. The train just didn’t win me over.

I also did like the temple of the ocean king. How the different items you got opened new routes and shortcuts, and you could try and beat your times.

Also the flute was terrible and barely worked.

The forced touch pad controls is what led to my phat ds sitting in a drawer. I got it for trading a CD player back in 2005, so no big loss. It came with Mario 64 too, which I played once a few years back on vacation. The touch is horrible for controlling Mario, and a d pad doesn't work well. Got a 2ds xl now. Still haven't gone back to play it (I'd rather just play it on 64), but the DS really should have had a stick from the get go. 3ds should have always had 2.

Most motion controls I find terrible, except for Splatoon. Hell the Odyssey throw your hat thing ended up hurting my wrist.

OK, I'm two temples into Phantom Hourglass now, and find the touch controls are mostly just fine. I have a slight quibble with the little twirly circles to do a somersault, as I end up swinging my sword roughly half the time, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the game itself. Tracking the boomerang's path and scribbling notes on the map are both great. I will happily play this through to the end, regardless of how many times I have to visit the Temple of the Ocean King.

Phantom Hourglass was a fantastic game in it's own right, they did at least make good use of the touchscreen. Though if you're enjoying it this much, be sure to play Spirit Tracks as well, it's definitely the better of the two.

A thousand times this. Spirit Tracks is the stronger game overall IMO (even with that iffy Spirit Flute). Crazily I played these in reverse order.

Both are great games, but I'd still rank many of the other Zelda games above them.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)
