@moomoo Doesn't everyone possess the power for both of what you said already?

Bravo V8 Ninja, I like those. because in all honesty, those could be one in the same. If you had the power for that though, would that not corrupt you in turn? In essence, it would turn you into a sponge for good or evil. Taking in the desires of people you believe to be right or wrong, but inherently, the power could make you evil. Sounds a bit self sacrificial to me

Very true. It all really depends on the being's mind deciding what's right and wrong. I'd love to see where you could take that idea in a video game.

@V8 ninja, ah, THAT I can reveal, the character you play as is the character making these decisions.
but that is relatively easy to figure out isn't it?

@jangonov True, but that doesn't make me less excited for the game. It's still a very compelling idea to have a game that throws tons of decisions at you and make yourself decide which are the good decisions and which are the bad ones.

well, that is not quite it, but you have the general feel of it. It isn't so much that you have good or bad decisions to make. Fable did that, and you can easily choose which way you want to go. I want decisions in the game that have no right answer, and you must deal with the consequences of that choice much later, even after you forgot about it. It is a combination of hundreds of tiny seemingly insignificant inputs that accumulate to a toll in the characters life that is either hard to pay, or very rewarding. Depending on how you look at it. And I can almost guarantee that the genre you think it is, is not even close to what I have planned.

@jangonov OK, I get it now. But still, that's a very compelling idea and I'll keep a close eye on the development of the game.

My Ultimate Good Desire: To make it to the DigiPen Institute of Technology (across the street from NOA's offices) and furthermore, Nintendo of America!
My Ultimate Bad Desire: To expose people to video games whether they like it or not (you can blame Nintendo for that)

@Sylverstone that is a noble cause indeed. I have something similar in mind. Oh wow I never even posted mine. I will update the original post to reflect what I would have.

@ Everyone who mentioned Brave New World You are awesome. That is one of my favourite books of all time.

@Janganov
Ultimate Good Desire- To bring happiness to as many people as possible.
Ultimate Bad Desire- To have no consequences for anything I did.

FATEM

@FATEM your proposal is perplexing. Separately they are standard, but together, in the fact that it came from one mind, show a deep inner meaning. I could be completely wrong, but by saying "as many people as possible" rather than everyone it means that you know not everyone can be happy. It is the nature of humanity after all. And to not have consequences for anything you have done, perhaps your means of gaining happiness for a majority means others were treated unfair? I would love for you to elaborate and tell me what you actually meant, as this idea is again, perplexing.

Well you're pretty much spot on. It's impossible to make every single person happy. A lot of people, due to various reasons, can't be happy without making other people miserable. And in those situations, it's impossible to tell which person is more deserving without knowing every single aspect of their personality right down to the smallest detail, and even then it's a grey area. Not to mention there would also be situations where you can't make one person happy without making another person miserable. In those situation, you'd have to make a gut call. That's why you'd want the 'No Consequences' power so no-one could call you out on choosing one person over another.

FATEM

So, the idea, If implemented, would to be a behind the scenes "happiness giver". To not be blamed for if you DONT give happiness to someone. Not to bring up a sensitive subject, But isn't that an early (from a historical not religious) version of a deity? I mean, should the god or gods bring happiness to someone, and not to another, the person with the short end of the stick would NEVER question what happened, and figure it was in a plan of some sort. Gods could not be blamed, simply out of fear. The only way I could see "No Consequences" is through instilled fear into the public. Eventually that could lead to a revolt though, so I guess that is "delayed consequences". Somehow in my thinking I can't fathom consequences being eliminated completely from your life for any action, much less excluding people from something. Do you have any ideas how this could happen, realistically, or unrealistically?

@FATEM: I like that bad desire.....

By the way, Jangonov, is this going to be a flash game or a WiiWare game (or simular)?

Fully developed for a yet to be determined system. I am currently in the process of establishing contacts, and finishing my education for game development. Depending on my luck and skill, It could be at the very least a few years away. Still, I have a very clear concept for this game, and I am refining the story line, and smaller details before I go into the stage of concept art. It could wind up on any system (I want it to be on the Atari Jaguar 2, which will be released next gen) but I come here because of all the gaming forums I know of, this is the most intellectual group. I won't just get "why isn't it more like halo?" "what if you throw in God of war style cutscenes?" and things like that. Nintendo gamers typically care more about gameplay and story than pretty graphics or trends. I want my game to be moving, and the art style will reflect that. Stan Lee when writing for comics, never had a set script. The artists would draw the general storyline, and when the frame was dull, he would "spruce" up the dialog. And when there was more action, he would lay off and let the art do the talking for him. People never combine these in games. I always loved the marvel method, and while I refuse to copy it, I am influenced by it.

The only way I could think of this happening is if the 'Happiness Giver' was some sort of cursed half-mortal. Still a mortal man but with the powers of some sort of minor deity and through some circumstances angered a god and was punished with this quest. Everyone knows who he is and what he must do but, due the nature of humanity and all that jazz, don't help him. As everyone realises that if they raise their standards of happiness this 'Happiness Giver' will give them whatever they want. Then we end up with the situation where he is not only trying to make everyone happy, but his quest is getting more and more dangerous to the world. e.g Millions of people want hundred acre mansions, so he has to find a hundred-million acres of land and build over them, regardless of what wildlife live there. Everyone want's to be a millionaire, but if everyone's a millonaire than the economy gets screwed up severely.
The people of the world will put up with almost anything for a little bit meaning he could away with stuff for a while but soon enough they'd start demanding results. Even though, as a half-mortal, he cannot die he can still feel pain so he knows if he doesn't give them what they want they can make him suffer as much as they want without him dying.

That's just a basic outline but the more I think about the more solid the idea becomes. The only problem is that properly conveying the full experience of this quest would be incredibly difficult. Even for a massive developer with the latest in software.

FATEM

jangonov

@FATEM you propose an interesting idea, but essentially you end up with Spider-man/Hercules syndrome. Superpowers, internal goals, tries to make everyone happy but fails.
But what you are saying is No sociological consequences. The personal Consequences on his mind would be TREMENDOUS though. Unless he had no care for human problems. If he didn't care for mortals problems, he would have no idea on how to fix them
