I hope they lose soon. I live in germany, and one thing's certain: football fans are one hell of an annoying pack. My neighbours won't shut up about that corrupt farce that is called "sports event", and if germany actually wins the cup, the entire country will be unbearable for four years flat! I'm putting my faith in each and every opponent of germany.

But, just to get that outta the way: I don't watch it. There's no way I'm gonna waste my time on football.

And I thought America's two-week interest in soccer was bad. I give you my deepest sympathy.

I was disappointed to see such a poor victory today. Germany is one of those teams you picture always winning by two or more goals. Reminds me of Spain in South Africa 2010. They would barely win matches and be crowned champs.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

What I find disturbing about the German team is that they keep underachieving (they have had the potential to win every tournament since 2006), yet Joachim Löw is still the manager!! Every manager, after losing two semifinals and one final, would resign - how come he's still sitting on that bench?!
Holland is probably going to win the cup.

Oh boy ... I don't even know what to say to this. "THE country will be unbearable" ... what the hell are you even talking about Oo
Nobody denies it is more than a sport event (what da hell is it with the quotation marks), it's also a big commercial event for FIFA, but how are those two contradictory? And how is that any different from any other big sporting event known to man? You know that everything costs money right and everyone tries to make dough? Assuming you are not in your 70s, you are way to cynical and vocal about it... Btw you live in Germany or you are German? Just curious ...

EDIT: I adore you avatar by the way. "SPLATOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!" I'm with you on that!

Well first off, you know that Löw is the headcoach not the manager, that would be Oliver Bierhoff. I realize it is a correct translation if you forgo the context but it is confusing since in soccer coach and manager are two very distinct jobs. Also it's a bit of confusion that can be easily avoided.
Secondly, you also realize that semifinals means nothing short of being among the four (!) best teams on the globe, finals being the best two (!!) teams on the globe. To me that sounds like a pretty impressive track record, I don't think you will be able to find many coaches that have been able to achieve something like this, on a consistent level nonetheless.
I don't agree with everything Löw does, but noone can deny that he changed soccer in Germany for the better and that he is pretty damn successfull. Sure he didn't enjoy ultimate triumph so far but let's keep in mind that only three people before him managed to take the German team all the way to the top ... and it has been a couple of years ^^. He came pretty close once and that much at least he managed again this time already. "after losing two semifinals and one final" is also a misleading statement. We are talking about World Cups after all, Löw was in charge in 2010, he lost that semifinal that much is true. I assume you are referring to the Euro Cup then ...
You may also want to take notice that Germany is currently ranked #2 on the Fifa global ranking, only topped by Spain. Not entirely terrible considering Spain won the last World Cup, as well as the last two Euro Cups ...

Holland doesn't participate; the Netherlands do.

beside the coach/manager thing (in my language the word would translate to "coach", but the rest of the world seems to prefer "manager" - check out the wikipedia entry for "Manager (association football)"), I understand finals/semifinals are a good result but in every cup (European or World Cup) everybody keeps saying how Germany is going to dominate, and so far...you haven't. Actually, you have lost the last Euro Cup against one of the worse incarnations of Italy I have memory of. You always seem to collapse when it comes to important matches. I think it's a mental thing rather than physical. I'm not saying Germany is a bad team - you're probably top-3 in the world, potentially. I'm just wondering why german supporters aren't tired of always coming in second or third. With the team you have, you should have won at least one thropy during the last 8 years.

I noticed the FIFA ranking - did you notice that Holland, probably the strongest team around nowdays is ranked #15? And that Switzerland (which apparently didn't have much to offer during this World Cup) is ranked #6 above Colombia, Belgium, Chile and France?! And Spain and Italy, which sucked (Spain because they stopped doping - Italy because our manager is an idiot) are #1 and #9? FIFA rankings don't matter.

Seems like you just don't like football and thus everyone openly interested in it is "annoying".
Great way of discrediting an entire country by the way.
I bet you'd post the exact same nonsense no matter what country you would live in.

I acknowledged that coach/manager thing already FYI: "I realize it is a correct translation"
That was the reason I pointed it out, I assumed you knew what you meant, it is just not clear to everyone else, again it is a potential mix-up that can easily be avoided.
In regards to the rest of your argument ... well that's soccer for you, not always the "best team" ends up winning the cup, not always "the favourite" ends up being the "best team" and you are certainly right that a huge part of it is just a "mental thing". I consider this a fact, there is plenty to back up such a claim. But there is just no such thing as "you should have won at least one thropy during the last 8 years." Based on what should we of all teams have won anything recently?
You say the Fifa ranking doesn't matter, what does ? You seem to judge the quality of Holland based on 3 or 4 games ... maybe I may remind you that is by far not the first time they showcased the most impressive and plain beautiful performance on the field in recent years at the beginning of a tournament. What did it get them in terms of trophies in the end? Diddly squat.
It doesn't matter how well you performed in your group matches, how well you performed in your last elimination match, what matters is only how well you perform in the next one. Anything can happen on that field in 90-120 minutes, certainly anything is possible when it comes to penalty kicking, we've seen this over and over again.
You are quick to dismiss the Fifa ranking but at least they show the even Holland fails to perform consistently, the utter lack of trophies on their end also shows they fail to perform "right on time". Therefore I cannot follow your line of reasoning.
To make this short, no, we shouldn't have won anything, we could have though, and I would have loved to ... that's all there is.

Edit: Something I forget to mention, Germany entered the semi-finals for the 4th time in a row, that is a record and therefore at least we made some sports history! ^^

You must be fun at parties.

OT:I'm rooting for Germany, I started watching the World Cup when it was on Africa(Mostly due to everyone talking about it + Shakira singing), and Spain & Germany were my favorite teams, while Spain is long gone now, Germany is till at it.

I want Netherlands to win it because they haven't won a WC yet.

I'm very glad USA lost so I could stop hearing about it. My deepest sympathies to @Kaze_Memaryu. May yer neighbours quiet themselves of soccer soon.

one of the problems i have with this event is that people who have never been interested in football and have no clue about it suddenly watch all games of the german team. of course only the games of the german team because they are not interested in the sport itself but in the patriotic party. this is so annoying to me because i really love football and played it for many many years.
and then the people shout "SIEG SIEG!" which means "victory victory" and it sounds so much like stuff from the nationalsocialist times in germany a few decades ago. you can even see some old german reich flags in between the patriotic party crowd. people also use super stereotypicall phrases for other countries teams. or they even say that they hate them. i dont know if you can imagine that if you dont live in germany.
in the meantime politicians in germany usually use football world cups to pass new laws that even the super lethargic germans would protest against.

that's why i hope the german team will loose so this stuff can finally stop. because it always stops when they loose and the world cup goes to an end.
