I've been thinking of either renewing my subscription to Game Informer or subscribing to Nintendo Power. I care more about Nintendo, but I like fairer ratings and wider news coverage. Which one is over-all better?
I go for Nintendo Power, but that might just be the fan boy inside of me. Nintendo Power (in my opinion) has fair ratings (except for some Sonic games; they love blue hedgehogs), some news coverage that comes out even before it hits the Internet, and is all about Nintendo. Plus, it mentions Mr. T and Chuck Norris and has a funny sarcastic sense of humor.
I'm currently subscribed to Nintendo Power and Game Informer, and obviously, for Nintendo coverage, it's no contest.
Who cares about reviews; there are much better and fairer reviews online because they have less space to review something in the magazine and Nintendo Power loves Nintendo and it's fair to say that Game Informer isn't as fond of them compared to the other two systems. Besides, Nintendo Power gave SMG2 a 9.5, while pretty much every other Nintendo-centric site jumped at the chance to label it a 10. GI gave it a mere 9.0, and personally, I'd say that score doesn't do justice to the amazing platformer. This is all only if you actually care about "fairer ratings" since ratings don't matter; the content of the review does.
I agree with PunnyGuy: they give every Sonic game an 8.0 (even Shadow the Hedgehog and the Black Knight), refer to pop culture often (Mr. T and Chuck Norris, new movie opinions like "even though this Transformers game is terrible it's still better than the movie," etc.) and literally have "world exclusive reveals" quite often (too bad they're always leaked a little bit to the internet beforehand, like Sonic Colors, Super Scribblenauts, NBA Jam, etc.).
If for some reason you want news coverage of systems you don't seem to own according to Backloggery, well, obviously Nintendo Power doesn't have that.
They are on the other hand very passionate about what they write about, and, to me at least, represent everything good about Nintendo.
I get both, NP because its an excellent source for Ninty stuff, and GI for all-console coverage (and also since you get the subscription when you sign up for the GameStop discount card dealy). I used to get OXM, but in the past few months it's gotten worse and worse as far as defending stupid MS decisions, so i've dropped that subscription.
And yeah, NP is far less Ninty-biased, and i like that they actually give fair reviews as opposed to many other mags or sites that always feel the need to add "it's good for a Wii game". But they don't shy away from bashing a game if it's crap.
